Here’s I’m A Cliché very first compilation, celebrating five years of existence. The label, founded by Cosmo Vitelli, has released 12’’ by artists and producers such as Simian Mobile Disco, Yuksek, Bot’Ox, Runaway, Quiet Village, Tacteel and Tekel among others.

It seemed to be the right moment to take a look at the road behind us while keeping an eye on the future and all the beautiful gems to come.

The compilation, called Moment Of A Crisis, comes in two parts. The first CD, called Overtime, features all the tracks that we view as the label’s classics such as ‘The Mighty Atom’ by Simian Mobile Disco, ‘Everywhere in Town’ by Yuksek, ‘Crashed Cadillac’ by Bot’Ox, ‘Putting in the Overtime’ by Runaway or ‘Delayer’ by Cosmo Vitelli.

The second CD, ‘Holiday’ is all about brand new tracks exclusive to this compilation. It’s a journey through musical genres, from radical rock’n’roll (The Fear, side project of Milo Smee from English weirdos Chrome Hoof) to Surf Music (‘Purple and Green’ by Electronicat or ‘Grease’ by It’s A Fine Line, side project of Ivan Smagghe and Tim Paris).

Dancefloors won’t be left behind. The Aussies from The Canyons, the brand new Modular and DFA signature, deliver the killer ‘Blue Snake’, while the New Yorkers Runaway hit us with ‘Your League’, crafted with the same dub-house feel that made laste year’s Rekid release a hit. Dont miss the huge ‘Hungry for the Power’ by Azari & III, a proper hit this year for sure. You can download it for free here:

Posted in Black Music, Funk, News, Promotions, Soul, XLR8R Podcast on June 18, 2009 by E.N.

“Do not attempt to adjust your radio dial,” proclaims Dudley Perkins, and with that, he kicks off the Unconditional Love podcast, over an hour’s worth of smooth, sultry soul jams concerned with matters of the heart. No need for much elaboration though. Dudley walks us through the 21 tracks here, which were mixed by the one and only DJ Romes.

XLR8R TV: Ghislain Poirier

Musicians and artists have it good in Montreal, as we found out when we spent a day with Ghislain Poirier. Not only do 70-year-old women sip wine in cafes and nod their heads as you and Face-T play your latest murder-lyric soca jam, but the police are totally chill when you set up an illegal 1,200 person party under an overpass! Definitely worth braving -20 degree Celsius winters for.

Feature: Julien Vallée

A piece of paper is worth a thousand words for this rising Canadian design star.

Inbox: Flunk

For this week’s Inbox, XLR8R catches up with Ulf Nygaard, producer for Norwegian trip-hop group Flunk, while he sails on a fjord outside of Oslo (no, seriously).

Minus 8 – "Slow Motion" // Get a FREE DOWNLOAD from his upcoming 6th album!

Posted in Downtempo, Lounge, Promotions on June 18, 2009 by E.N.

Compost proudly presents: Minus 8 – “Slow Motion”

For considerable time Minus 8 stands for reduced pace and Downtempo music.
Is Downtempo coming back? In contrast to the tempo delusion of DJs and the hectic lifechanges, the answer is yes. At some time someone will announce the revival of ‘90s Downbeat music again – however – Minus 8 always was a part of it.: warm, jazzy sounds, organic rhythms, smart vocals and sometimes even a little bit of funkyness – but yet, always in a well temperated manner.
He uses his DJ-experience gained in different genres like Hip Hop, Drum&Bass, Latin, Funk and Jazz to create a round and homogeneous album as result. „Slow Motion“ is without a doubt his most adult album. Even though the tempo increases from time to time towards the end of the album, he never looses himself in arbitrariness or adds another clubtune, instead he integrates it consistently in his overall trademark-sound.
His music definitely has rough edges which stand out in a disarming vacuity.
