*Listen* Four Tet -Love Cry

Posted in News on October 29, 2009 by E.N.

The latest release from Kieran Hebden arrives in a growingly familiar and mysterious context. With no information, sales note or sleeve artwork and released on a limited print 12″, we expect this to fly off of our shelves. The lead-track “Love-Cry” is evident of Kieran Hebden’s recent exploration into hypnotic , Kraut infused 4/4 techno… a chopped female vocal sample dances ecstatically in the rhythm machine to great effect. On the flip “Our Bells” he takes us through a mini symphony of chiming, oriental bells- beatless and delicious.

We are currently taking pre-orders for this limited single release to ship for the week starting 2nd November. Judging by how quickly his last mysterious 12″ with Burial flew out when we announced that, we would recommend buying this… quickly… very quickly.

Balance 015 (Mixed and Compiled by Will Saul)

Posted in Dub Step, Electronic, Grime, Tech House on October 29, 2009 by E.N.

Will Saul has been announced as the next DJ in line to mix an installment for the Balance series.

You may remember the fuss back in March over Joris Voorn’s 100-plus track mix for the Balance mix series, which now leaves Simple and Aus boss Will Saul the somewhat unenviable task of producing the follow-up. Saul has returned to the format favoured by former entrants SOS and Lee Burridge by penning a three disc mix, which takes in a host of styles and sounds.

We cornered Saul for a brief run-down on what to expect from the mix.
What tack did you take with the mix?
I wanted to take the opportunity of a triple mix CD (I needed 3 CDs to fit in half the amount of tracks that Joris used!) to try and showcase all the different styles and vibes of electronic music (and beyond) that I’m into. The mixes touch on disco (CD 1), organic dub/dubstep/house/soul (CD 2) and then techy, trippy, melancholic and euphoric house/techno/dubstep for CD 3.

I wanted to make it as timeless as possible so I’ve included a lot of gems from the last ten years of DJ’ing and collecting music and pieced it together with how I’m playing now and tried to make it all sound fresh and current.

I did the mix on Ableton but I wanted to avoid the overly polished/clean sound of a sequenced/automated mix so I bought a controller and recorded the mixes in real time so all the volume,EQ and dub FX are added in real time.

Why did you decide to do a mix with the Balance series instead of, say, your own label?

Running two labels myself I know what a big job marketing and licensing a triple mix CD is. It’s something I’d always dreamed of doing in the future but the Balance guys asked me now so I jumped at the chance. The Balance series has a really well established global fan base so it was also an amazing opportunity for me to reach people that haven’t heard me DJ or the music I make and release. I had total free reign on the tracks I selected for the mix and Dan from Balance has done an amazing job of clearing all the old/rare tracks I requested so it’s been an absolute pleasure working with them.

Izzi Dunn- ‘Tits & Ass’Blunt Laser Remix

Following an inspiring hiatus where she toured extensively with some of the world’s most notable artists, West London’s Izzi Dunn is ready to return with her scintillating second album Cries And Smiles

Cries And Smiles is the latest unique chapter from a self-sufficient musician (she writes, produces and plays most of her own material) who has already had a remarkable career. As a cellist she’s played for the likes of Mark Ronson, Gorillaz, Chaka Khan and Soul II Soul. Izzi has also graced the cream of the UK music scene with her talents, The Brand New Heavies, Roots Manuva, Beverley Knight, Jamelia and Bugz In The Attic are just a few of those who have benefited.
The new album showcases her skills as a versatile singer-songwriter who has some important things to say. Her distinctive, soulful voice is on full display. However, her skills as a cellist and arranger, continually honed since childhood, are an indispensable aspect of proceedings. There are no sampled strings here people.

Tits and Ass is the first single from her new album, which expertly and bravely derails the sexism and hypocrisy that many take for granted. This is her announcement and calling card that the album is coming soon.

The single will be available as digital download and limited 7 inch that won’t take long to become a highly sought after collector’s item!!

Scarlette Fever – You Don’t Know My Name (download Justin Wilkes Remix)

Posted in Chillout, Downtempo, Electronic, Lo-Fi, Lounge, Promotions on October 24, 2009 by E.N.

Scarlette Fever
‘You Don’t Know My Name / Lovestruck’
Label: Starfisch Records
Release Date: October 26th

Scarlette Fever – You Don’t Know My Name (Justin Wilkes Remix)Download

Scarlette Fever is the latest new sensation to emerge from the UK, her songs and sound containing in them vivid evocations of a life lived and loves lost, rather than callow youthful platitudes. You Don’t Know My Name is the lead single from her debut album Medication Time and will be released digitally as part of her Sticky Fingers EP on 26th October.
You Don’t Know My Name indulges your aural sensitivities on a hauntingly, beautiful journey of Scarlette’s love from a far. The song is cleverly built around a sample of John Barry’s Midnight Cowboy that mixes a touch of pedal steel with a gorgeous melody that drifts like dry ice. With a compulsive love of film and music, John Barry is “as good as it gets” and for Scarlette Fever it was an honour and an incredible validation to be given the blessing of the eminent composer who rarely clears the adaptation of his music.

So impressed was Barry that he asked Scarlette to record a song from his farewell to film scoring tribute ‘The Beyondness of Things’. Don Black specially created the lyrics for ‘Give Me A Smile’. It is a reflective soundtrack that perfectly demonstrates Scarlette’s affinity with all things epic. “It was the hardest song on my album to record,” she admits. “I’m lucky to have been afforded such an opportunity at this stage in my career.”

Scarlette’s debut album, ‘Medication Time’ will be released early next year and follows a distinct theme, one of “chocolate, coffee, wine, self-help books whatever it takes. These are the ‘medications’ I use and often, in excess to deal with the highs and lows of life. Of course, my ultimate medication is my music, there’s a song for every mood swing.”
Sticky Fingers EP will feature remixes of You Don’t Know My Name from Loverush UK! and a chilled out version from Kiss 100′s very own Justin Wilkes. Finishing the EP are remixes of Scarlette’s track Lovestruck
