House Of House – Rushing To Paradise (DJ Harvey Streets Mix)

Posted in Deep House, Nu Disco, Reviews on February 27, 2010 by E.N.

There’s a bit of a cliché about remixing perfect tracks. Why bother, the thought goes, when you’ve already got something that doesn’t need “fixing”? “Rushing to Paradise” isn’t a perfect track (although it’s pretty close to a perfect song in my mind), as evidenced by the wide variety of edits floating around, and the wide variety of tempos I’ve heard it played at. But DJ Harvey’s remix of the epic tune hardly does the thing justice. The edit maestro splices and dices “Rushing,” making it more suitable for the floor, but loses the bits around it that made the original so special.

That’s his job of course, but you get the sense that this is a bit of a missed opportunity. Like taking out “In the beginning there was jack” from “My House.” (Well, not that bad, but you get the point.) With such rich source material, it feels as though there would have been endless possibilities for Harvey to ponder. And, in the end, we simply get something this straight ahead? Bummer, dude.

Then again, if you haven’t got the original—and considering how much the original pressing sometimes goes for elsewhere, we don’t blame you—we can’t recommend this one enough.(RA)

*Review* Bassnectar COZZA Frenzy Remix pack vol.1

Bassnectar COZZA Frenzy REMIX pack vol.1
*Review* By Caveboot

Is a big, bursting, filthy bag of tricks.By now you must have seen Loren play live, and if yes you know what a difficult time it is for him to leave the decks. crowds panting and possessed are held up only by the quaking air that Bassnectar brings, limber and abandoned to the thrall of sound. This is a man that hates to leave his crowd, knowing that that would only bring silence, and collapse, two things entirely opposed to his mission as a certified floor burner.
Consider the cozza remix package to be the after party, then, to the dynamic and popular LP, a denser room packed with Nectar and pals determined to wring that last shiver and sweat from you with more stomping stomp, more wobbling whomp, and some fresh new angles.
Front run by versions by the man himself, expect the expected from the luminous
list of remixing artists; Vadim, Noah D, RJD2, all turn in efforts worthy of their weighty names without veering too far from the name brand itself, in their own turns
crisp, ferocious, and head-noddic.Must haves on the e.p. are tacked at the very back, a harrowing voodoo-crunk campaign from taste maker’s crack habit Robot Koch spools out of the speakers like glass taffy, brittle and smooth, while Stagga whips it to the finish with a jumpy stepper full of dizzying mid range hoovers, feeding air back into the raging burn of branching breaks, carnival ride lights pulsing and arcing on this whirling trip.
If somehow you haven’t seen Bassnectar, you can grab this remix pack and get ourself a quick ticket to the late night version, suspended in that stream of bass until you force yourself to turn it off.

Breaks filtered through the lens of dubstep, perhaps, with a brief drum and bass denouement.” – FADER
Pretty Lights is responsible for some of the freshest sounds in contemporary electronic music/hip-hop today.” – Denver Post

Mark your calendars. On March 2, June 15, and October 12, Colorado-based producer Pretty Lights, aka Derek Vincent Smith, is set to release a trilogy of EPs. Now here’s the fun part: in an effort to get his music directly to his fans as soon as it’s written, Derek will record the EPs only a few weeks before each release. It’s a pretty gutsy move to set release dates without finished material, but for Derek, who’s been recording albums and immediately releasing them for free on the internet since 2006, setting deadlines like this isn’t a big deal.
Pretty Lights’ last three albums, Taking Up Your Precious Time, Filling Up The City Skies, and Passing By Behind Your Eyes have been downloaded over 500,000 times from PrettyLightsMusic.com. These tracks juxtapose beautiful vintage samples against backdrops of futuristic synthesis and dirty broken beats. And as Pretty Lights looks ahead to his next three projects, his music could take him anywhere. The future is yet to be written for Pretty Lights.

Since he started touring in 2008, Pretty Lights’ mix of electro beats, vintage samples, and DJ Shadow-esque throwbacks have earned a dedicated following across the country. With an ambitious live setup that includes the addition of Cory Eberhard on drums and stunning visuals, Pretty Lights’ performances have become the stuff of legend. One year later, Pretty Lights sold out 65 venues across the country with many fans begging for extra tickets at the door. This spring, Derek will crisscross the country again, hitting up SXSW, Ultra Music Festival, and Coachella in the process. Already selling out dates, he’ll also be stopping in on 20 cities he’s yet to perform in, as a part of his never-ending quest to spread his music across the globe.

XL RECORDINGS / DFA SPLIT 12” AND DOWNLOAD RELEASED ON MARCH 8TH, 2010.

It started off as a drunken conversation at Corsica’s Calvi Rocks festival in July 2009. Friendly Fires had just played live, Holy Ghost had just finished DJing, and in the post-gig haze the decision was made by each band to cover one of the other’s songs.
Eight months later and here are the quite brilliant results. Friendly Fires were the first to honour the agreement, finishing 2009 in the studio with a superb take on the DFA duo’s ‘Hold On’ classic. Meanwhile, Holy Ghost’s cover of ‘On Board’ took a little longer – sessions vanished, vocal tracks mysteriously vanished, hard drives were fractured and somewhere in the middle of it, the duo lost their close friend Jerry Fuchs, whose awe-inspiring drumming is at the core of this version of ‘On Board’. The results are equally special.
