Download Martyn – XLR8R Podcast 125

Posted in Dub Step, Electronic, Funk, Funky, XLR8R Podcast on February 25, 2010 by E.N.

At this point, an artist like Martyn needs no introduction. Widely hailed as a leader when it comes to pushing sonic boundaries, particularly in the world of dubstep, we here at XLR8R are simply ecstatic that he’s put together an exclusive mix for our weekly podcast series. Fresh off the release of his genre-hopping Fabric 50 mix, here Martyn gets even more schizophrenic, somehow assembling a cohesive listen while delving into classic house and techno, heady hip-hop, avant-garde beats, new-wave pop, and more—he even kicks things off with a little bit of chillwave. Refusing to limit himself to a single sound or style, Martyn always pilots a unique course—the fun part is following along on the journey.

MASSIVE ATTACK ANNOUNCE FIRST NORTH AMERICAN TOUR IN FOUR YEARS IN SUPPORT OF NEW ALBUM ‘HELIGOLAND’

Posted in Events, News, Promotions on February 25, 2010 by E.N.

Heligoland’ Debuts At # 46 On The Billboard 200 Marking Highest U.S. Chart Position Of The Duo’s Career

Massive Attack’s arsenal has expanded and the resulting onslaught is nothing short of brilliant.” – Billboard Magazine

more menacing than midnight in the darklands. Welcome back- you’ve been missed terribly.” – Alternative Press

Much of ‘Heligoland’ works like this – a dour, glitchy intro of impeccable atmospherics implacably winds its way into something panoramic and exhilarating.” – Los Angeles Times

Heligoland still prizes the minimalism that always made Massive Attack seem so cool” – New York Daily News

Legendary Massive Attack will tour North America for the first time since 2006 in support of their newly released 5th studio album ‘Heligoland.’ The North American trek will start May 7th at Sound Academy in Toronto, ON and wrap May 30th at the Sasquatch Festival in George, WA. They will play 2 shows in NYC, Los Angeles and San Francisco with general on sale beginning March 5th (full schedule below).

Massive Attack’s latest album ‘Heligoland’ was released on Feb 9th on EMI’s Virgin Records and debuted at #46 on the Billboard 200, marking the highest U.S. chart position of the duo’s career. An all star cast join founding members Robert Del Naja (3D) and Grand Marshall (Daddy G) on their first studio album in 7 years which includes Damon Albarn, Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval, Martina Topley-Bird, Elbow’s Guy Garvey and TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe. USA Today praises the collaborator’s contributions on ‘Heligoland’ by saying, “They give the gloomy grooves and chilled beats a heartbeat but also step into Massive Attack’s otherworldly sonics with enticingly haunted performances.” Albarn also plays bass on “Flat Of The Blade” and Keyboards on “Splitting The Atom” while Portishead’s Adrian Utley plays guitar on ‘Saturday Come Slow’. The band also collaborated with DFA’s Tim Goldsworthy on selected tracks. The cover artwork features an original image by Robert Del Naja.

Over the last three years Robert Del Naja has written and produced soundtracks for a number of films and documentaries, including ‘Trouble In The Water’, ’44 Inch Chest’, ‘In Prison My Whole Life’ and ‘Gomorra’, the latter for which he won the David Di Donatello Award for Best Song. Last year Massive Attack won the Outstanding Contribution to British Music Award at the Ivor Novello Awards. In September, Massive Attack headlined this year’s Bestival ahead of their first full UK tour in three years.

Deadbeat Vampire EP

Posted in Dub Techno, Electronic on February 25, 2010 by E.N.

Heavily insistent dub techno from Deadbeat on the latest Echocord catalogue number. ‘vampire’ comes in two versions, with the relentless throb of the original offset by spacious dub rhythms and surging bass for the skankers, while the Dub leans on a wicked halfstepped dub vibe reminding strongly of ’2′ era Pole. That’s always a very good thing in our minds and should be no small indication that you need to check this out!(boomkat, listen, buy here)

MARK PRITCHARD – Elephant Dub

Posted in Dub Step, Electronic, Experimental, Funky on February 25, 2010 by E.N.

Living up to his unrivalled reputation as one of the most versatile and capable producers in electronic music, Mark Pritchard rolls off two of his most deadly riddims for Mala’s Deep Medi stable. If you’ve not caught one of Mark’s releases as Harmonic 313, Jedi Knights, Reload or Global Communications you need to go and do some revision mate, but if you’ve been keeping track of the last 20 years of dance music you’ll know what we’re talking about. The steamroller subs of ‘Elephant Dub’ are crushingly heavy, creating a dense pressure that causes the snares to ping off the surface with spring-loaded velocity and taking out weakheart dancers in the process. ‘Heavy As Stone’ on the flip alleviates the pressure with a dose of Sun-Ra styled Vitamin D, licking soul-stirring female vox, elegiac keys and even a glimmer of likembe over 4/4 steppers patterns, all anchored with that sublime bass-weight. This is heart-in-the-mouth material, tears on the dancefloor anthem (boomkat, listen, buy here)

SONAR 2010 :: Barcelona :: 17.18.19 June -Line UP incl.Joy Orbison, Roska, Zomby…

Posted in Events, Festivals, News on February 25, 2010 by E.N.

SONAR 2010 :: Barcelona :: 17.18.19 June :: International Festival of Advanced Music and Multimedia Art

Unavoidable touchstones in British electronica
Major names in electronica from the British Isles, who are all unavoidable touchstones, will be at the festival with recently released work. This is true of The Chemical Brothers, whose seventh album is about to see the light of day. They will be presenting a completely new show; Dizzee Rascal, who in the blink of an eye has moved from being a young talent of grime to a media star in the UK and a recent winner of a Brit Award; Matthew Herbert, a master of disguise and an alchemist of everyday sounds, with his new project “One Club”; and Hot Chip, who have won over audiences and critics with their recently released new album, “One Life Stand”.

Underground in constant movement

But music in the United Kingdom is not just about stars. In fact, the British underground is musically the most exciting place today. Dizzee Rascal himself was part of this movement until recently. It has always been bubbling under the surface, providing high of doses quality and unceasingly rejuvenating the dance genres in the islands.

This is a trail which joins the dots between the legacy of Jamaican immigrants and the influence of dub, the birth of jungle in London 15 years ago, trip-hop emerging in Bristol, broken beats and two-step, and the muddy sound of grime and the recent explosion of dubstep, which has in turn led to a range of new subgenres which are still in the development phase: wonky, uk funky, funkstep, dubtec, etc.

This scene includes artists as interesting as Joy Orbison, Roska, Zomby, King Midas Sound, Hudson Mohawke, Speech Debelle (winner of the prestigious Mercury Prize in 2009), Goldielocks, the young producers on Glasgow’s Lucky Me label and Mary Anne Hobbs, the guru of urban rhythms, who will all be present at Sonar 2010.

The festival also takes in other high quality approaches receiving broad-based recognition, ranging from the noisist experimentation of Fuck Buttons and Necro Deathmort , to the past perfect, nostalgic and evocative pop of Broadcast, by way of the pure underground flavoured techno of the Sandwell District label.

DJ veterans Eli Goldstein and Charles Levine not only oversee some of the city’s finest parties, they’ve also been busy taking their soulful, disco-infused brand of techno around the globe, producing all sorts of remixes and re-edits, and dropping the extremely well-received RnB FreE.P. On this mix, they’ve employed a number of their own concoctions, along with a few of their Beantown favorites, and cooked up a smooth, slow-burning musical journey that does Boston proud.

Take, born and bred in LA, has recorded for Poobah, Eat Concrete, Plug Research and is about to drop his full length on Alpha Pup this year.. With his three tracks, TAKE continues to push the boundaries of left filed experimental Beat music into new directions. The influence of vintage electronic records, 1980’s soul, and hard crunchy beats is apparent as they all get crushed and melted down into fine gold…

Greg Wilson – Random Influences part 1

Posted in Uncategorized on February 24, 2010 by E.N.

Launched on his 50th birthday, the legendary Greg Wilson compiles a celebratory selection of 7” singles from his formative years. Covering the 60’s through to the mid-70’s, when he started out as a fresh-faced 15 year old club DJ, these records embody the soundtrack of his youth.

With running times of approximately 2 hours, the 12 individual monthly parts will conclude in a full day’s worth of music. Having only pre-determined the opening and closing tracks, Greg will select the rest as he goes along, moving in whatever directions his mood takes him at that moment, in a similar way to how it might be if he was sitting at home playing records to friends. The title, ‘Random Influences’, reflects this arbitrary approach.
