Antony and the Johnsons

(Due October 12, 2010)

Album to be Released Secretly Canadian;

Antony and the Johnsons will release their new album, “Swanlights”, on October 12th in the US via Secretly Canadian.  Abrams Image will simultaneously release a special edition of “Swanlights” which will include the CD inside a 144-page hard cover book containing Antony’s paintings, collages, photography and writing. The album only version of “Swanlights” on Secretly Canadian will also include the song “Flétta”, a duet with Björk. The album and book are a continuation of Antony’s work exploring his connection to the natural world.

Book to be released by Abrams Image

While I Am a Bird Now is compelling in its vulnerability, and The Crying Light is a masterpiece of austerity, Swanlights may be Antony’s most wide-rangingly emotional work to date. It is a record that is at moments heartbreakingly  tender, and at other times has a joyful gleam to its teeth. Unlike previous work, which was often quite sparsely voiced, on Swanlights the vines in the garden are overgrown and the sound palette has become more exotic; strange percussive elements, John Cale-esque string drones, heavily distorted guitars and symphonic winds and strings thread the song cycle together.

“Everything is New” opens the album with a newborn piano melody that quickly gathers in momentum and excitement. Strings and bursts of percussion carry the song forward in a feral cacophony of sound. Later on the album, the title track  “Swanlights” finds us navigating a primordial and hallucinatory world of hazy guitar tones. The enigmatic layered melody of “Swanlights” emerges from a glistening soundscape. A central image on the album, Antony explains what he means by the word “Swanlights”:  ”It’s the reflection of light on the surface of the water at night. It’s the moment when a spirit jumps out of a body and turns into a violet ghost.”  On “Thank You For Your Love”, Antony expresses a soul-infused sentiment of gratitude, but the song progresses into urgency, leaving behind the 4/4 rhythmic structure and breaking into an emotional gallop that reveals an underlying pathos.

The Swanlights book is a collection of thought-provoking paintings, drawings, collages, photography, and writings. Dreamlike and often bleakly environmental, Antony depicts a natural and spiritual world under siege. Much of the work aches with a forlorn romanticism. In some pieces, the artist draws together fragments of the past, the present and the future to create a ghostly sense of omniscience. One image features a portrait of the artist with his great grandmother’s face projected upon his own, creating a ricochet through time and genealogy.  Found images of natural landscapes are stained with scrawls of ink, indicating invisible presence and movement. Some pieces are more conceptual; in “Cut Away The Bad”, the artist removes corrupted elements in an attempt to restore balance.  In pieces like “I Want To Help” Antony sews a torn landscape back together with a magical intent.

Music and visual art intersect in these two presentations of Swanlights to create an arresting vision of the world through the artist’s eyes.

Swanlights is the fourth Antony and the Johnsons album and the follow up to the critically acclaimed “The Crying Light” which entered the European Chart at #1 was included in year-end best of lists across the globe in 2009. Antony burst into the international spotlight with his second album, “I am a Bird Now”, which won the UK’s prestigious Mercury Music Prize.

Release Note

After 10 years of exploring the highways and byways of electronic music exceptional records proudly presents a lovingly assembled sonic collection the likes of which you are unlikely to find elsewhere.

With a heartfelt belief that there is much much more to electronic music than four to the floor and formulaic hands in the air twelves the label has consistently released a determinedly unpredictable selection of artists and mixes carving out a path lying somewhere between mainstream and experimental along the way

This deliberately wilful approach is neatly encapsulated in “From Disco to Dubstep”  a wide ranging electronic exploration which joins many of the dots in an ever mutating series of scenes. Released as part of the label’s 10th anniversary celebrations, the double-CD release features an eclectic selection of 16 remixes of artists that currently call exceptional home. Touching on disco, lounge, electronica, house, electro, breaks, dubstep and more it throws down a challenge to narrow minded purists daring them to look, listen, and leave their comfort zone behind to explore just some of the possibilities that define electronic music.

This is a celebration of a series of genres that may perhaps seem quite disparate, yet find common ground thanks to their roots in electronic software. Amongst some of the more familiar names on the tracklisting you can find Mock & Toof’s exuberant, 80’s-tinged deep house remix of Plej’s “Borderline”, typically impressive deep 4/4 action from Jimpster with his remix of “Awakening” by Ken Ishii, Tom Middleton’s up for it remix of “All Over Again” by Blu Mar Ten, the bazooka-bass dubstep of The Rogue Element with his remix of Nursery of Naughtiness’ “Electrified”, Reso and Raffertie trading punches, and Planas’ drastically different electronica restyling of Culprit 1’s “Screamer”. and the soulful dubby rework of Tubbs’ “New Way of Life” by Marlinspike (aka hot property Red Rack’em/Hot Coins ), featuring the chocolatey vocals of Joe Dukie. The whole package is completed with CD 2  providing the many splendoured original versions of the remixes featured on CD 1.

“From Disco to Dubstep” then – proof positive that all is not lost in the world of compilations, and a sparkling showcase for Exceptional’s eponymous output.

Madlib Medicine Show #7: High Jazz+free mp3

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , on June 29, 2010 by E.N.

Madlib Medicine Show #7: High Jazz is an all-new Madlib jazz production. High Jazz, the name itself a tribute to the landmark jazz-fusion album released by Stanton Davis’s Ghetto Mysticism in 1976, shows a marked development in Madlib’s craft.

Since the introduction of Madlib’s Yesterdays New Quintet releases nearly a decade ago, the producer’s core group of musicians and collaborators (known collectively as “Yesterdays Universe”) has grown by the dozens.  The notoriously elusive, publicity-shy and anti-commercial ethic of the group has kept many of the recordings from every being released, while others have been pressed anonymously, kept within the group or distributed only among private collectors.

Among the newly released tracks on High Jazz are a Madlib, Karriem Riggins & James Poyser collaboration, the debut of groups Generation Match, The Big Black Foot Band, RMC, and a 15-minute live piece by Yesterdays New Quintet (recorded at a secret show in 2000).  The 15-track album runs a total of 61 minutes.

Limited edition 3-disc vinyl:  Madlib has collected an additional 30 minutes of music for the limited edition vinyl release of High Jazz.  These tracks are not available on the CD or digital release.  Album covers will be hand screened by Hit+Run with a design by Jeff Jank, and individually numbered. See photos at stonesthrow.

Album track list:
1. The Jackson Conti Band – Steppin’ Into Tomorrow (Prelude)
2. Generation Match – Electronic Dimensions
3. Jahari Massamba Unit – Pretty Eyes
4. The Kenny Cook Octet – High Jazz
5. Yesterdays New Quintet – Medley: Don’t You Worry Bout A Thing (Live At Spear for The Moondog)
6. Interlude
7. The Big Black Foot Band, feat. The Black Spirits – Reality or Dream
8. Russell Jenkins Jazz Express – Drunk Again
9.  Poyser, Riggins & Jackson – Funky Butt, Part 1 (MP3)
10. Jahari Massamba Unit – Wonderin’/Nightime
11. R.M.C. – Space & Time
12. Yesterdays New Quintet – Conquistador
13. The Big Black Foot Band, feat. The Black Spirits – Tarzan’s Theme
14. Interlude
15. Joe McDuphrey Experience – Kimo

Bonus LP track list:
1. Jahari Masamba Unit – Falling
2. Yesterdays New Quintet – Runnin’ Fast (On The Runs)
3. Sound Directions, feat. Malcolm Catto – Shady Cops
4. The Eddie Prince Fusion Band – The Struggle Is Over/Next Chapter
5. O.D. – Wasted (Themes Variations)

As the sun shines over Ibiza, Ibiza Rocks’ club-night, Reclaim The Dancefloor, announces more exciting artists to its already incredible line up. Taking place every Wednesday at Eden Nightclub, San Antonio, Reclaim The Dancefloor is already shaping up to be the highlight of this summer’s season in Ibiza.

Joining the schedule for 2010 and needing now introduction will be Germany’s foremost techno-electro producers, Boys Noize as well as a visit from label mates, Djedjtronic.

Holy Ghost from James Murphy’s DFA label brings the sound of New York to the island. Meanwhile, Switch, Herve and Boy 8-bit further represent the UK. The 2010 touring alter ego of Mehdi & Riton, ‘Carte Blanche’, will be passing through on 28th July. They will be joined by Riva Starr, People Get Real and the fast-rising techno star and Planet Turbo resident, Matt Walsh.

Other confirmed guests include the exceptionally talented Beardyman and the grimey hyper-bass of L-Vis1990.  Drum & bass continues to play a dominant role in the Reclaim sound with the confirmed booking of Breakage, whilst the dedication to up-and-coming talent is marked by the Ibiza arrival of Starsmith, Ado and Bowski.

30th June’s Reclaim the Dancefloor, with Annie Mac, Skream, Rusko, Jack Beats, Doorly and Mak has been confirmed as the official launch party for the Ibiza Rocks Presents Reclaim The Dancefloor compilation album, which is released June 28th on Ministry of Sound.

(download)Moby Old-School Rave Mix-XLR8R Podcast 148

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , on June 29, 2010 by E.N.

It’s easy to throw around words like ‘legend’ and ‘pioneer’ when talking about electronic music, and let’s face it, half the time people won’t say boo about these labels, most likely because they don’t know who they hell you’re talking about. But when it comes to true-blue dance music heavy-hitters, the kinds of artists that even your mom has heard of, it’s hard to top Moby. The man has changed a lot since getting his start making high-energy rave tunes in the early ’90s, but even as his music has morphed, changed, and, yes, mellowed, it’s always been clear that Moby still has a soft spot for that bygone era. Here at XLR8R, we’ve been itching for someone to do a classic rave mix, so we figured who better than Moby to put together a pumping session full of hyperactive synth stabs, feel-good piano melodies, whooshing hoover sounds, and endlessly pulsing beats. To our delight, he was up for the challenge, and the mix does not disappoint. Listen to the mix—we’ve had it on repeat since last week—and if you’re in the mood for more Moby DJ action, check out his recently released Wait for Me. Remixes! album on Mute, which features a Moby DJ set along with reworkings of songs from his last full-length.

The iPhone app: Brooklyn To Babylon: Shinobi Ninja Attacks!
Shinobi Ninja Attacks! is like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles meets Double Dragon, with drumsticks and guitars instead of katanas and nunchucks. While the band’s music is bumping in the background, players choose their favorite Shinobi Ninja member and fight their way through the streets of Brooklyn, subway cars, and a massive line at the mythical Club Babylon to rock a show. Along the way players beat up evil hipsters, knock down douchebags from the Jersey Shore, and subdue angry subway riders, as they earn points and treasure.

The game comes pre-loaded with five Shinobi Ninja music tracks, one remix, and two music videos that can be unlocked for free as gamers reach higher levels. Shinobi Ninja Attacks! also rewards fans for making the real world journey to a Shinobi Ninja show. The app uses smartphone GPS capability to locate concertgoers who have installed the app, so they can be further rewarded over-the-air (OTA) with more free music and promotions.

Shinobi Ninja:The Video Game EP
“Blaow!! Straight up in ya face!” Brooklyn’s Shinobi Ninja is on the attack! A six piece diverse collective, Shinobi Ninja is the ultimate fusion of hip urban fashion, tech savvy, and DIY ambition. With their unique bouillabaisse (If you caught the Paul’s Boutique reference, you’ll get where we’re coming from) of throwback hip-hop, punk, reggae, and thrash, Shinobi Ninja crafts party anthems for the touch screen generation, old school hip-hoppers, discerning hipsters and anyone with a pulse.

“To put it simply, they area walking, breathing, and screaming cartoon: Loud, colorful, and full of enough energy to put nearly any other band to shame.”

“Six musicians from all different backgrounds creating a sound that mashes funk, reggae, hip-hop, and punk to create the ultimate party music.” – URB

“Lyrically reminiscent of a house party in Brooklyn circa 1994, the band makes a nod to the old school while remaining in touch with their inner fiesta, fun craving personalities, and un-tethered desire.” – HIP HOP REPUBLICAN

Listen Clips

1. Subtraktive [King Midas Sound dub]

3. Subtraktive [Deepchord presents echospace live mix]

Echospace are proud to announce the third ep from the forthcoming cv313 album, “dimensional space”. This release marks the first remix from one of the UK’s most revered talents — King Midas Sound (The Bug) who manages to take the original in a direction one would never expect, truly the midst of something beautiful, it’s haunting, infectious and has no restrictions to gravity, this is truly something to float in. Next we have a heady subliminal interpretive from Seattle’s, Rafael Anton Irisarri as The Sight Below (Ghostly) ; this mix is as narcotic as you would expect, a slow motion dream where in every twist and turn a new detail unfolds, it’s like visiting an unexplored world — subtle and hypnotic. On the B side we have a more 4/4 number culled from Deepchord presents: Echospace (Modern Love) live set from this past year. It’s all about that syncopated bassline, a subterranean bottom and an atmosphere as deep as the ocean floor — underwater space funk!

Custom made mylar sleeves, screen printed with 160 gram blue vinyl. Limited to 300 copies worldwide.
