Since we last heard from Darkstar, the group has added vocalist James Buttery to its lineup, though co-founder James Young says this hasn’t changed the feel of their music too drastically. “It’s part of the grain, interwoven with the synths, distortion and all the other things we like fucking with… Synthetic and effected vocals just sound better on our tracks I think.”
In an extensive interview with labelhead Kode9, Young discussed the dreary circumstances that led to the album’s creation. “The burden of making an album in a dingy two bed in Clapton was overwhelming and the hardest thing I have ever had to do,” he says. “My lyrics started to reference things that happened to me in the North and the sonics and arrangements became anti-colour. We’d had enough of glowing synths… Aiden and myself both lost people close to us while making the album and no matter how hard we tried to escape to focus on recording we’d always be pulled back up by something.”
The album features mostly new tracks by Darkstar, plus their acclaimed single “Aidy’s Girl Is a Computer” and a rework of “Squeeze My Lime,” which appears here as “When It’s Gone.” The album’s first single will be “Gold,” which imitates The Human League’s “You Remind Me Of Gold” played at 33rpm instead of the intended 45. A music video for “Gold” is currently in the works.

Ever since the news broke that venerable UK label Planet Mu had signed young juke experimentalist DJ Nate, a whole new wave of juke- and footwork-related excitement has taken hold in the music world. When it was later revealed that the label had also snatched up music from fellow Chicago producers DJ Roc and DJ Rashad, the hype reached a whole new level. Admittedly, XLR8R hasn’t been immune to all the chatter about this hyperactive sound from the Windy City; our next issue will include an in-depth look at the city’s juke scene, we’ve invited DJ Rashad to headline the next installment of our monthly TURRBOTAX® party this Friday in Brooklyn (alongside live sets from Pictureplane and Ghosts on Tape), and we’ve also tapped him to put together an exclusive mix for this week’s edition of our podcast series. Assembled with the help of his frequent partner DJ Spinn, the mix is a relentless flurry of unreleased tracks, high-speed percussion, and chopped-up vocal samples that’s more than likely to break some ankles.

Also I am very psyched to offer all sorts of experiences to you- such as glamorous “Be a Princess Superstar!” makeover; customized birthday songs; meditation lessons; or even private full on burlesque show with my dancers! Can you imagine if this were available in the 1960′s and 70′s? Man I think I would pay anything to hang out with the Beatles or Chaka Kahn! And, since I am an animal fanatic and am active in charity work, I am going to donate some of the money to PETA. This is a revolutionary process for an evolutionary album Thanks for being a part of it! Love, Princess Superstar”
How Does Pledge Music Work?
Pledge Music tries to keep its offering very simple – an artist sets a target for an amount of financing they wish to raise to fundthe recording and marketing of their new album or DVD. The artist then approaches their fans to ask for ‘pledges’ towards the total in return for a digital download, CD or DVD of the resulting project.
The pledges available are tiered so that the fan can pledge, for example, one amount for a simple digital download, a slightly higher amount for the digital download + physical CD, an even higher amount for a bundle that includes the digital download, the physical CD and t-shirt and so on. The artists can determine themselves exactly how they wish toinspirethe pledge money.
Unlike some other fan funded offerings no money is taken from pledger’s accounts until the pledge target has been met.
The key differences between Pledge Music and other fan funded investment models are –
· No money is taken from the fan until the entire pledge target is met
· The artist retains ALL their rights forever whether they be recording, publishing, merchandising or live. Pledge Music is not interested in owning any rights that belong to artists.
· Pledge Music charges the lowest, flat rate commission in the marketplace.

For FACT’s 180th mix, we’re very excited to present a session by mysterious Swedish duo Skudge, the pair behind some of the year’s most talked about house records.
Skudge haven’t released a lot – prior to this year’s four singles on their own self-titled label, there was just the one 12” on alphahouse – but the quality of their output has seen them win fans across the globe, particularly ‘Convolution’, a nimble house stepper which sounds like classic Echospace thrown in a cocktail shaker, and has been played by everyone. It’s one of those tracks where even if you don’t think you know it, trust us, you’ve heard it.
But ‘Convolution’ was clearly only the beginning for this talented pair. The Skudge productions that have followed – ‘Melodrama’, ‘Ontic’, ‘Overture’ – are equally assured, operating in the space somewhere between Ben Klock, Remote Area and Basic Channel, but never sounding anything less than the incredibly individual, focused work of a remarkably talented unit. Skudge have also just contributed a remix of Iori’s ‘Grit’ for Phonica’s white label series – that came out last week, and as you’d expect, is excellent.
The pair’s FACT mix features a healthy dose of Skudge material, including an Aardvarck remix of ‘Convolution’, alongside cuts by Martyn, Mark Broom, Jeff Mills and more.

(Available for three weeks)

5. Skudge – Overture (Skudge)

9. Skudge – Ontic (Skudge)
10. Cab Drivers – Jellyheads (Cabinet)
11. Stasis – Turnstile (Pure Plastic)
12. The Pig – Are you…? (Rush Hour)
13. Phenomyna – Everlast (Otherworld)
14. Jeff Mills – Scout (Purpose Maker)
15. Dj Sid – A (Axodya)
16. Reload – Peschi (Evolution)
This track stands up tall and proud as an out and out Pitch Twit classic. Its got the bendy bass line, the tricky bits, its got heaps of character and it’s hugely danceable. It’s catchy as hell – you’re gonna love it!

Released 6th September 2010 through Proper Songs
Special Benny release their debut album “Toys” through the Proper Songs label on 6th September 2010. The six-piece band are Mat Baynton, Grace Cheung, Tom Corbett, Ben Gates, Rob Smoughton and Matt Turner who hail from Southend, Brighton, Bexleyheath and Hong Kong but now call London home. Most of Special Benny studied music, apart from Mat, who went to clown school. Although five members can distinguish between a Neapolitan 6th, and a French 6th, none can fall over quite so hilariously as Mr Baynton.
The tracks on “Toys” draw from a variety of musical influences. Although they admit their individual tastes differ greatly the band cites Tortoise, Jim O’Rourke, Sufjan Stevens, Battles, Frank Zappa and Steve Reich among their shared favourites.
As might be expected from a band who admire such experimental luminaries, there is a high degree of collaboration and planning involved in their song writing: “We finish all our ideas together, or the band as a whole aren’t interested. Democracy can be hard within a band, it can lead to arguments. But at the same time, the fact that we are always surprised when we play together is an absolute joy.”
Special Benny are not a band to rush things – their ultra-obsessive nature with microscopic detail of sound would send the most hardy of studio hermits around the bend – but even for them “Toys” has been a long time coming. Mat and Ben have been making music together since they were 14, before meeting other members around university and starting Special Benny (named seconds before playing their first gig, the name stuck ever since…). Despite building up a solid live following and self-recording/producing/releasing the “Rumblestrip EP” in 2006, the group struggled to find their natural rhythm and life began to interfere. original drummer Steve Galloway left, Matt Turner took a job in Australia for a year, Mat Baynton’s acting career took off, Ben and Grace started a family – the group even called time on Special Benny with a final gig at their spiritual home of The Fox in Lewisham, South East London.
Then in late 2008, they discussed playing seriously again with their friend and drummer Rob Smoughton (who releases as Grovesnor on Lo Recordings and is live drummer for Hot Chip). The resulting rehearsals inspired the group into resuming with renewed focus, leading to the completion of “Toys”.
The release of “Toys” is a testament to their desire and need to create music together, and to do so on their own terms as a group. It is the sound of people discovering common ground despite their differences and disruptions and creating music that’s beautiful, precious, timeless and entirely their own.
