CNL002 – Mount Kimbie
Release date: 29 Nov
01. Blind Night Errand
02. Before I Move Off [digital only]
03. William (Dayglo Mix)
04. Maybes (Live at Berghain)
After the release of their widely received and critically acclaimed debut album ‘Crooks and Lovers’, Mount Kimbie – made up of friends Dominic Maker and Kai Campos – have announced their next EP. Including ‘Blind Night Errand’ and ‘Before I Move Off’ from the LP, the 12” is due for release in November through Scuba’s Hot Flush Recordings. The EP also includes an alternate ‘dayglo’ version of ‘William’ remixed by Mount Kimbie themselves, alongside a live recording of ‘Maybes’ taken from a recent set at the infamous Berghain club in Berlin. ‘William’ and ‘Maybes’ both originally featured on their stunning debut ‘Maybes’ EP.
Mount Kimbie tend to be regarded as part of the ‘post-dubstep’ scene, although ‘Crooks & Lovers’ doesn’t always reflect this. Listening to ‘Blind Night Errand’, you can understand how they’ve evolved from the dubstep clubbing scene; the song is respondent with understated dubby pulses and ambient vocals. ‘Before I Move Off ’ is more delicate however, with experimental percussion and haunting, compelling melodies.
Having previously released a series of EPs and remixed the likes of The XX and Foals, ‘Crooks and Lovers’ has defined Mount Kimbie as an original and exceptional act, an act whose music can’t be tethered to just one genre. Abundant in paradoxes, the album floats through dubstep and hip-hop, jazz, techno, post-rock, UK garage and film scores to startling effect.
With stellar performances at Field Day, Bestival and clubs & festivals across Europe this year, also supporting Caribou and the XX, Mount Kimbie have just returned for their first US tour and continue to go from strength to strength.
Sebastian Mullaert is probably most famous for his recent success with his Minilogue alias, releasing the album Animals on Cocoon Recordings in 2008 . During the last years he’s been touring heavily around the globe both as live performer with Minilogue and as a dj under his own name. He has also produced music under the name IMPS, Son Kite and Ooze.
“When it comes to Franco-pop, Phoenix get the lion’s share of the attention, but Tahiti 80 have been at it almost as long (if not just as long) and have made four danceable, hook-filled albums.“ –Brooklyn Vegan
Formed by multi instrumentalists Xavier Boyer, Médéric Gontier, Sylvain Marchand & Pedro Resende, Tahiti 80’s adventure began in the French cities of Rouen and Paris in the mid 90s. Their first full-length, Puzzle, recorded with Andy Chase (Ivy, Brookville) and featuring Eric Matthews and Adam Schlesinger, was released by Minty Fresh in the U.S. in 1999, and was critically acclaimed as a refreshingly upbeat nod to late 60s West Coast pop (particularly the Beach Boys). The album also placed Tahiti 80 squarely in the center of the “French Pop Invasion” that was hitting the U.S., along with fellow French bands Phoenix and Air (most notably). Since that time, the ever-prolific Tahiti 80 has released three additional albums and eight EPs. The band’s current line-up has grown to include Raphael Leger and Julien Barbagallo.
T80’s ninth and latest EP, Solitary Bizness EP, is a prelude to their upcoming fifth album, The Past, The Present & The Possible, and represents the strongest experimentation of the band’s career while still maintaining the it’s signature sound. Recorded in T80s “Tahitilab”, the new EP and album once again capture singer/guitarist Xavier Boyer’s breezy vocals and heartfelt lyrics, while infectious beats, rhythms and boops uncontrollably propel the mind and body. Both the EP and album are being released on T80s own label, Human Sounds(a reference to The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds).
The Past, The Present & The Possible will be coming your way shortly, featuring contributions from Tony Lash & Tore Johansson (both of whom have worked with the band for years). There will also be remixes by Château Marmont, Pilooski, John Talabot, and more!

Scuba, aka Paul Rose, has been at the forefront of the dubstep scene since its birth. Having founded the innovative and influential Hotflush Recordings label in 2003, he has continually brought colour and depth to an advancing genre, expanding its sonic structure and increasing its influence on the wider electronic scene.
Through Scuba and seminal work by central figures including Distance, Vex’d and more recently Mount Kimbie and Joy Orbison, Hotflush remains crucial to the immediate moment and the developing future of the most exciting aspects of electronic music. In addition to label and production duties, he also runs the massively successful SUB:STANCE night at Berlin’s techno Mecca, Berghain, the sound of which he committed to plastic in a DJ mix released on Ostgut Ton in January 2010.
Following the first Scuba LP, A Mutual Antipathy (2008) which was remixed by Marcel Dettman, Martyn and Surgeon, Triangulation (2010) took the Scuba sound to a new level. The collision of dubstep and techno has produced startling music from a wide range of producers in the last few years, none more than Scuba, and that has been well documented. But Triangulation moves past the dubstep/techno axis and into new territory. Working at multiple tempos, the album covers an area ranging from house to experimental drum n bass while retaining the Scuba sound that has become so distinctive.
For Triangulation (Interpretations) new allure is breathed into Scuba’s originals. The listless beauty of Before is embued with a spine tingling warmth on Scuba’s luscious opening re-edit, Before (After). A remix of Latch by Will Saul & Mike Monday of Simple Records, Aus Music and Buzzin’ Fly, infuses the dubbed out original with a dose of bumping house flavor. America’s totem of bass Faulty DL takes leave from the original On Deck with a low burring bassline and elegantly woven melodies drawn warmly across the whole. Scuba’s back with the old skool vibes on You Got Me (I Got You) but confidently skips the line by keeping it firmly in this moment. Canadian Deadbeat has showcased his own brand of dub laden electronics for the likes of Wagon Repair, Scape, Spectral , Musique Risque and Cynosure over the past decade, his remix of Tracers sees him in classic form delivering a deep 7am techno heavy hitter. Joe made an immediate impact on the scene with his 12”s on Hessle Audio and Applepips over the past year, his rework of So You Think You’re Special has a slowly blossoming groove underpinning stuttering percussion, jangling keys and an expertly playful melody that opens out across the sparse background. Finally, South London’s Deadboy offers an understated modern jungle remix of Before with skittering hats and heavy bass that can’t fail to light up floors and faces.

Denis A – Das Auge EP

(DAR) DAR017
12” Vinyl & Digital
Made in Russia
12” Vinyl Release 08/11/10
Beatport Exclusive 15/11/10
Full Digital Release 13/12/10
Moscow’s rising-star Denis A and his DAR label are firing on all cylinders having returned from a summer tour of huge events in Ibiza, Germany, and Ukraine. With DAR016 (Sith / Korriban) currently causing a commotion, its time to unleash the next instalment from Moscow’s finest – DAR017 (Das Auge / Beholder). Denis A is on a creative roll in 2010, having already unleashed a series of stunning tracks, he is making his mark around the globe with each new release.
Das Auge is a delicious slice of deep dark groove creation, that shows exactly why Denis A’s progressive attitude is turning so many heads right now. Beholder shows a different side to Denis A’s production skills, with its tech bounce and swagger. These tracks are highly suited to that late-night territory where things can get a little bit twisted. As usual, they will sound amazing on a big sound system thanks to the mastering skills of Robert Babicz.
You might also like to delve into some of the DAR back catalogue on your audio travels. For example, Ocean (DAR010) with its lush, hypnotic melodic beauty, and anthemic shimmering energetic Monaque Remix, has remained on people’s playlists for months, and has been getting repeated plays from Sasha. Denis has also unveiled some of the hottest new Eastern European remixers from Russia, Ukraine, and Slovenia, over two Remix EPs (DAR011 Part 1 & Part 2), with their interpretations of some of the DAR label’s best tunes to date… Chemical Test, Heaven and Mirage. Since then, Denis A has continued to blur the boundaries between genres with more timeless electronic dance music in the form of Brutalizm and Muai Thai In Bangkok (DAR102), and the intense acidic analogue atmosphere of Test Drive (DAR013) and superb percussion fuelled Ahnenerbe (DAR014). Finally, don’t miss out on the intense elongated epic Z (DAR015) with its superb euphoric breakdown. If you were a fan of that whole “Northern Exposure” vibe, you’re going to love it!
