R.I.P Darryl Pandy

Vocalist Darryl Pandy – best known and internationally known for the early Chicago House track “Love Can’t Turn Around” – has passed away, according to a facebook post from Farley Jackmaster Funk.

Blessed with a six (“and a half,” he was quick to note) octave voice, Darryl had been ill for the last several months, which lead to several benefits held on his behalf in the Chicagoland area. He first came to prominence following the early (and completely unexpected) success in the United Kingdom of “Love Can’t Turn Around”; the track was one of the few re-issues in House Music to become a hit twice when the 1997 re-release with Farley Jackmaster Funk reached the Top 40 Billboard chart in the UK.

It obviously became the greatest success of his career and the title that will forever be associated with him. It was, in a sense, his “Love Sensation” – in fact, “Love Can’t Turn Around” frequently appeared on flyers and other promotional items beneath his name. Think of how few dance music records have become that big – big enough that they can receive top billing beside an artist – and you can get an idea of just what kind of an accomplishment that was.(5chicago report)

Since almost a decade he is pushing the boundaries with a raw, deep and cutting-edge sound which is always refreshing and truly personal. With his very own Sthlmaudio Recordings he has possibly established a new form of house music which is rooted in spaced out dub, bouncy boogie as well as in rough techno and has also released many great tracks on the side for labels like Plak, Ornate, Perspectiv and Resopal to name just a few. The amount of releases is hard to overview as he likes to come up with new project names like Ray Valioso, Benelli or Cavalier.

As Cavalier he released in 2008 his first EP for us entitled “Ride ‘em”, when we asked him for more tracks to do another 12″, he sent us around 40 tunes with a sound which blew us away. Ron and myself started to play them out, overwhelmed by the energy of his music, we decided to ask Boris to release an album. Cavalier aka Agnès is known for his usual deep, dubbed-out minimal techno productions and explore as well more house- influenced rhythms and textures. Agnès runs the Geneva-based label Sthlmaudio Recordings. Launched in 2003, Sthlmaudio has released tracks by Agnès, Puma, Octex, Apoll, Cabanne, Croatian producers Luka & Lazo and lately the Swiss duo Azuni. Agnès also had a well received EP on Cabanne’s Minibar label (’Treat Me Bad’) and popular releases in late 2006 on Plak Records, Einmaleins Musik and Perspectiv Records. He has recently started to collaborate with the Zürich based label Drumpoet Community under the moniker of Cavalier. He also released to date 2 EP under his Ray Valioso name for Real Soon Records in the UK.

John Selway & Dave Turov -Choo Got It EP(preview)

The partnership between artists John Selway and Dave Turov spans not only across the Atlantic, but it has also resulted in a series of successful collaborations on their label CSM. “Jazz Hands” as well as “Avid Hustler” EPs have won them acclaim for their genre-defying ability to create jacking tracks out of diverse and even contrasting elements. Now they have decided to pair up once more to launch Interpull, a new in-house label from PullProxy management agency in Berlin.
The debut release on the Interpull imprint showcases their signature no-nonsense, dancefloor-oriented techno. Expanding on their previous work, “Choo Got It EP” carries with it a modern take of classic influences from Chicago, Detroit, and Berlin. This release is marked by just as much stylistic skill as it is by their technical skill: both Selway and Turov put the highest production values possible into their releases.

The A-side of the EP, “Choo Got It”, grooves hard with an upbeat rhythm and a bouncing bass line that refuses to let up. Combining funky house elements and a raw driving techno pace, this is the kind of track that either gets you on the dancefloor or doesn’t let you off once you hear it go on.

The B-side, “Way to my Heart”, presents a darker take on the EP with plentiful bass and restless energy. It provides a cavernous sound that‘s happy to shake your techno cathedral of choice.

This time we have a new comer Pehr Genlogue (Dialtone) who gets remixed by 4 in-house artists. First is Room 10 (Metroline Ltd.) they deliver a deep, hypnotic groove with great vocals. Next is B.I.S.C.A.T.E. (Freizeitglauben) with a minimal house remix and a repetitive blend that spices things up. Psykoloco (Gimmick) is a more housey interpretation that will work fine for those warm ups full with chicks and last but not least is Massimo Cassinni (Dialtone) he gives us a great dubby, funky track with lots of groove and rhythm.
