Punx Soundcheck – ‘From The Roots’ Album +Free download ‘Rocker Time Style

Punx Soundcheck – ‘From The Roots’ (HTTWRKCD02)

A heavy dancefloor affair…” – DJ Mag

Free download Rocker Time Style (Radio Edit)

‘FROM THE ROOTS’ is the third album from Punx Soundcheck, with strong radio and club support from the likes of Kissy Sellout (Radio 1), Annie Nightingale (Radio 1), Eddy Temple-Morris (XFM), Larry Tee, Tronik Youth, Mark Moore, Brandon Block, Tittsworth, and many more. “From The Roots” was recently released on download and coming very soon on limited CD Digipak.
This album represents Punx Soundcheck’s year zero; a journey through their truest influences and into new directions, their most cohesive and complete album so far. Bringing together the music that shaped them and the music that’s shaping their future, ‘From The Roots’ traverses disco and house, reggae and dubstep, electro and (old) rave, all the while sounding effortlessly and elegantly modern.

Tracks from the summer of 09’s ‘Cassette Eject’ EP make a welcome return on the album, while the club favourites ‘Cassette’ and ‘Youth’ are joined by a brand new reworking of ‘Arcade Pony’.
November saw the single release of the nouveau filtered disco monster ‘Whoa’, it’s twisted cut-up style eyeing up the dancefloor with serious intent.
Musical Youth’s Dennis Seaton provides reggae credentials and guest vocals on ‘Good Love’ while newcomer to the Punx Soundcheck fold Sim: One rocks it on ‘Badboy Sound’ and future single ‘Keep It Flowing’. Regular guest C. Monts gives us what-for on ‘Slip Disc’ and narrates the theme music of the best film never made with ‘Rocker Time Style’, coming on like John Carpenter if he’d grown up in Dalston…

XLR8R Podcast 122: Jubilee

Posted in 2 Step, Dj Mix, Dub Step, Electronic, Funky, Grime, XLR8R Podcast on February 7, 2010 by E.N.

Until now, the 2010 XLR8R Podcast series has been filled by heavy hitters from overseas, but we haven’t lost sight of all the great DJs on our own side of the pond. Take Jubilee (a.k.a. Jess Gentile), who regularly whips dancefloors into a frenzy with her rambunctious combination of bass-heavy electro, upfront house, UK funky, and plenty of tropical flavor that can be traced back to her younger days as a Miami Bass-worshipping Florida raver. Jubilee currently sets up shop in Brooklyn, where she heads up the Nightshifters label with Jason Forrest and the monthly Flashing Lights party with Nick Catchdubs and DJ Ayres. And if you’re in Brooklyn tonight, you can catch her headlining our monthly TURRBOTAX® party, where she’ll undoubtedly be serving up a mix just as sizzling as this one.

Jackmaster – Exclusive Numbers Mix for Dazed

Posted in Dj Mix, Dub Step, Funky, Grime on January 10, 2010 by E.N.

Jack sorted DD an exclusive Numbers mix celebrating the newly formed Voltron super label incorporating a troika of Glasgow’s finest. For the best part of the last decade Numbers has been the name of the formidable club night (from Modeselektor to Ghostface) hosted by hometown heros Stuffrecords, Dress 2 Sweat and Wireblock records (in turn run by Richard Chater, Jackmaster, Spencer and Nelson). And it makes sense in 2010 that wee Numbers focuses the labels together as one too. Design pals Remote Location serve up the blazing graphic aesthetic (bringings back laser etched, one-sided vinyl) whilst Numbers build on the collective back catalogues of all three labels, which includes seminal bangers from Rustie, The Village Orchestra, Ghosts On Tape, Hudson Mohawke (released with LuckyMe), Moves!!!, Offshore and Slugabed.

2010 sees Numbers drop thizzed out club anthems Deadboy’s If U Want Me, the Lazer Sword Golden Handshake EP and Redinho’s Bare Blips.

Shortstuff -XLR8R Podcast

Posted in Dub Step, Funky, Grime, UK Garage, XLR8R Podcast on January 9, 2010 by E.N.

The bevy of music bubbling out of the London underground still doesn’t have a proper name, but we here at XLR8R are happy to keep lapping up the infectious mix of house, garage, funky, and bass sounds being produced by artists like Shortstuff. With only a handful of proper releases to his name—albeit on top-flight labels like Planet Mu, Ramp, and Berkane Sol—Shortstuff (a.k.a. Richard Attley) also runs the Blunted Robots label (with fellow XLR8R fave Brackles) and has quickly risen to the top of this nebulous scene.
