Reggie Dokes is an undisputed Detroit house heavyweight. In recent years he’s notched up a string of deeply involving releases for everyone from Prime Numbers and Philpot to his own Psychostasia Recordings. On this release he starts the new Clone Loft Supreme Series with two hustlin’ house cuts; ‘Chicago Pimp’ strutting it with tough drum patterns and hypnotic keys hinting at something a little more sinister, and the Afro-syncopations of ‘I Wear The Mask’ sounding uncannily alike Mujava or many of the UK Funky fellas but still unmistakably from Detroit. LOSOUL & RAYSOO – Metroworks EP

Posted in Deep House, Minimal House, Tech House on December 23, 2009 by E.N.

German house veteran LoSoul refreshes his game by linking up with Malay producer Raysoo on two tracks of intimate minimalism backed with remixes from DJ Sonny and Pawas. We find lead cut ‘Metroworks’ poised at a point between hypnotic techno minimalism and slow house classicism while the more abstract ‘Following A Melody’ features a more exotically psychedelic sense of swing and groove development. DJ Sonny’s mix perks up the slow grind of the original with rolling subs and Pawas fills embellishes the tripping ‘Following A Melody’ with insistent kicks and kosmiche synth swirls for a magical dancefloor experience(boomkat, listen, buy here)

Bodytonic Podcast 064 : Lowtec

Jens Kuhn’s approach to music can be described as agreeably Miesian: less is nearly always more. His discography stretches back over 13 years, yet his output is pleasingly sporadic. His choice of labels throughout those years – David Moufgang’s Source Recordings, Playhouse, Out To Lunch – reflects his recorded output too: he’s studied the classics, but filters them through his left-of-centre lens.

He began the Workshop label in late 2006. Like-minded artists like Even Tuell, Kassem Mosse and Move D found a home there, and it quickly became a go-to destination for anyone looking for something a bit different. The label’s minimal aesthetic – hand-stamped logos on white labels – has been done before, but it certainly pre-empted the recent vogue for faux-anonymity.

Workshop has just released a project from Reagenz (Jonah Sharp and David Moufgang), reviving some tracks the pair recorded in Sharp’s San Francisco base in 1994, and pairing them with new works. ‘Playtime’ is available as a separate 12″s or compiled on one CD (or, if you really want, a special vinyl plus CD package from select record stores).

Kuhn himself has been busy – but not too busy, of course. His recent Polyfon release, ‘Angstrom’, is a late contender for your ‘records of the year’ list, while 2010 brings two new remixes: Antonelli Electr. on Dusseldorf’s Level Records and Gadi Mizrahi on Spectral.

Bodytonic Podcast 060 : Van Rivers

Posted in Dub Step, Electronic, Minimal House, Podcast, Tech House, Techno on December 1, 2009 by E.N.

Henrik von Sivers moves around the fringes with ease. After remixes for fellow Swedes Lykke Li (alongside his buddy The Subliminal Kid) and Jenny Wilson, this year he delivered a killer blow, handling production duties on Fever Ray’s spell-binding debut album. For his solo projects, the Stockholm-based musician presents a spaced-out take on contemporary Detroit/dub techno, with releases on his Islands and Islets, SD Records (the excellent ‘Stretched Out On Pavements’) and his new imprint, 7, which has just released an excellent split 7″.

Matias Aguayo – XLR8R Podcast

Posted in Electronic, Minimal House, Techno, XLR8R Podcast on November 6, 2009 by E.N.

Between the rise of his Cómeme label and the release of his new album, Ay Ay Ay, 2009 has seen Matías Aguayo taking a major creative left turn. While the former Closer Musik member once made a name for himself crafting the finely tuned techno of his Cologne-based peers, he now spends his days twisting and turning the sounds of rhythms of Latin America into new-school dancefloor workouts. It’s unclear whether the native Chilean is returning to his roots or simply enjoying the exploration of a new sonic palette, but we’re certainly fascinated by the results. On this exclusive XLR8R podcast mix, Augayo’s penchant for experimentation continues, as he combines several of his own productions with everything from classic cumbias to Latin-flavored flea-market finds.

Matias Aguayo – Rollerskate

Posted in Minimal House on October 7, 2009 by E.N.

As you know i like to present tracks that are something different, this is very unusual track, probably future big hit at clubs, play and see reaction, easy to remember, just needs some remixes,we hope soon incl.version with less vocals or instrumental, for now album version.

What pitchfork has to say about this:
There’s a long history of roller skating in popular music, from Melanie’s 1971 kitschy folk-pop “Brand New Key” to classic roller disco cuts like Peaches and Herb’s “Roller Skatin’ Mate” and Vaughan Mason and Crew’s “Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll” all the way to De La Soul’s “A Roller Skating Jam Named ‘Saturdays’”. But you’d be hard-pressed to find a track (released any time during this decade, at least) that captures the glide and wobble and sheer fun of cruising on eight wheels quite like Matias Aguayo’s “Rollerskate”, the lead single off his upcoming Ay Ay Ay LP on Kompakt. The Chilean-born Aguayo, who was one half of minimal duo Closer Musik with pal Dirk Leyers, has shown off a more playful side with recent tracks (see the great “Walter Neff” off this year’s Total 10 comp), and “Rollerskate” finds the producer at his most lighthearted yet. Known for weaving his own giddy vocals into tracks, Aguayo here croons and hiccups over a backing layer of strung-together acapella voices– heavy baritone and spliced-up higher-pitched notes– that’s woven through well-placed hits of crisp, snapping bass. It’s expertly crafted but completely silly– almost makes you feel woozy like watching Chaplin in The Rink– and a welcome, unexpected turn from a label mostly known for its restraint. Bodes very well for Aguayo’s full-length and roller-skating rinks everywhere.
