For our next release, Plastic Fantastic visits Cologne in Germany. Or Köln to the locals… Possibly most famous for scented water, it is also the city where DJ Jean Philips started out mixing at just 13, got his first residence at End Art at just 16, and was then rapidly recruited by the seminal Cologne Warehouse. Since then he has toured all over Europe, with highlights being Under (Paris), Kinkamehameha (Frankfurt), Bangaluu (Berlin) and Greenkomm (Cologne). In the past few years, Jean has been developing another side to his musical creativity, producing with DJ Marc Hell on Desert Pearl projects, with Wollion on Blu Fin, and with Saints & Sinners producer, Wilfried as ROC:MA for Sounds Good Records. During last year, Jean has taken time out and has spent all his weekday time on developing his piano skills, and building his new studio. And out of that comes his next release: “On Demand” with Mike Kelly.
Mike Kelly hails originally from Sydney where he has been resident at Indulgence, and has played to massive crowds at Sydney’s Mardi Gras party 7 of the last 8 years – one of few underground DJs to be regularly selected. In 2005, Mike moved to Germany on a musical exploration tour, and found himself rapidly as a resident of Cologne´s illustrious progressive club Greenkomm, as well as Naughty (the hottest new event in Brussels), UC (Frankfurt), Mecx (Paris), Furball (Amsterdam), Mezzo Giorno (Antwerp), and still from time to time at Indulgence in Sydney.
But for the remix we go to Spain, where Ismael Rivas started in 1992 at the Bolshoi, and later moved on to Space of Sound@Macumba, the Sunday morning session par excellence. Ismael created his own style, which has been constantly evolving from more Latin and tribal sounds in its beginnings to progressive house and to the more electronic and avant-garde new beats that characterize his current sets. Now a resident at Madrid’s Ministry of Sound, Ismael’s remix completes Plastic Fantastic’s 73rd: On Demand.
