In association with Resident Advisor, the Red Bull Music Academy curates a special one-off night at the Royal Festival Hall, bringing a host of pioneers from the worlds of experimental electronics and avant-garde music. Carl Craig, Francesco Tristano, Moritz von Oswald, Matmos, Bugge Wesseltoft, Henrik Schwarz, DJ Sprinkles & Andras Fox. Electronic music has always advanced like a force of nature – pushing itself to every corner of the earth, and assimilating practically every other genre of music into its electronic template. Since techno’s heady space-age birth in the American midwest to its countless modern-day incarnations, its appetite for progress is still insatiable. The Red Bull Music Academy’s fascination with the genre’s future tangents is a dance that has lasted over a decade now. To further this investigation, the Academy takes over the Royal Festival Hall on February 12, with four collaborative acts who’re currently at the forefront of exploring the grey areas of sci-fi electronics, discoball jazz, neo-classical, laptop soul, and 22nd century techno – each one renowned for flipping the formula and getting creative with their own methodologies. Like the contents of an entire weekend festival condensed into one very special evening of music.
The mighty line up includes: Carl Craig, Francesco Tristano, Moritz von Oswald, Matmos, Bugge Wesseltoft, Henrik Schwarz, and Terre Thaemlitz as DJ Sprinkles. Also playing will be a selection of the Red Bull Music Academy’s participants, handpicked from around the world and re-working today’s sound formulas into distinct new signatures of their own.
Carl Craig Planet E, Detroit In years to come, Techno will be pored over and historicised and whatever the fate of the brave new world’s music, a handful of names will have been immortalised through it. Carl Craig’s is one. Craig started out as Derrick May’s chief assistant at Transmat Records in Detroit and London. In 1989 he released his first single “Elements” as Psyche on Transmat and became what can be called the spearhead of the second wave of Detroit Techno. In the 1990s Carl Craig released House, Techno and Electronic Jazz under different monikers including 69, Innerzone Orchestra or Paperclip People. In addition his productions can be heard on labels including KMS, Open, Mo’Wax and Retroactive. Soon after his first steps in the world of Techno he founded his own label Planet E. Today Planet E is one of the most well known and respected labels for electronic music of all genres. Artists on Planet E have been, alongside Carl Craig himself, Moodyman, Common Factor, Alton Miller, Recloose and Herbert. Carl’s recent work with remixes for Beanfield, Theo Parrish. X-Press 2, DFA or Rhythm & Sound reaffirmed his status as an exceptional producer, <!– Psyche/BFC – Neurotic Behaviour – Transmat 69 – My Machines – Planet E Paperclip People – Throw – Planet E Carl Craig – A Wonderful World – Blanco Y Negro Innerzone Orchestra – Bug In The Bass Bin – Planet E Maurizio – Domina (Carl Craig’s Mind Mix) – Maurizio Carl Craig – At Les – SSR Records Detroit Experiment – Think Twice – Planet E Theo Parrish – Falling Up (Carl Craig Remix) – Third Ear Carl Craig & Moritz von Oswald – ReComposed/Movement 5 – Deutsche Grammophon
Interview with Carl Craig at the Red Bull Music Academy
This is a short edit of Derrick May’s interview/ Lecture at Red Bull Music Academy.
To be a living legend is not an easy game to play. Derrick May plays that quite well though for 20 years plus. As one third of the infamous Belleville Three (Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson being the other parties) he created a beast named techno that longed for a beauty called soul. Strings Of Life being the quintessential track of that genre, May is responsible for an armada of similar tunes that all mix and mingle with industrial melancholy and romantic futurism. Unparalleled and universally valid… It Is What It Is.

De La Soul is not dead! You better believe it! The 3 New Yorkers reminisce on stage over their 20-year strong career during ou partner Jazz A La Villette Festival, in a global tour that pays tribute to their first album “Three Feet High And Rising”. Their Paris concert at la Grande Halle was off the hook, proof that their beats have not lost impact and that the years have NOT affected their energy and sense of humor. Mad respect!

Jean-Louis’ music is deeply rooted in the free spirit of the 1970′s. With hypnotic rhythms, saturated sounds and a telluric groove, they remind the forgetful that jazz is all about improvisation with no concessions. Honestly, we didn’t see this one coming and really enjoyed the show.

Review Carl Craig is back on Grandcrew.com with yet another crossover project! This time, exit the classical ensemble and welcome into Carl’s world of jazz with TRIBE! Jazz à la Villette welcomed the mythical jazz label from Detroit, Carl Craig and Grandcrew.com for a night of jazz mayhem! Slide trombones, trumpets, and wild percussions – all looked over by the producer and musical mastermind Carl Craig. Many thanks to the trumpet-player Marcus Belgrave, drummer Doug Hammond, pianist Harold McKinney and so many others for the good vibes on stage.

British house producers James Connolly and Alex Sushon (a.k.a. L-Vis 1990 and Bok Bok) may be experts in what’s going on in the ever-shifting world of London club music, but can they tell PG Tips from Lipton tea? Here, as they talk about their influential London party (and now record label), Night Slugs, we force-feed them American and British chocolates, ciders, and baked beans to see how culturally refined their palates truly are.
