DJ Eastwood 'U Ain't Ready' [w/ Untold + Spooky remixes] (No Hats No Hoods)

Following up from Ruff Sqwad’s critically acclaimed ‘White Label Classics’ at the end of 2012, No Hats No Hoots return with a release from DJ Eastwood. Originally pressed in 2003 on white label vinyl, ‘U Ain’t Ready’ sold over 5000 copies and even earned Eastwood a guest mix on the late John Peel’s BBC Radio 1 show.
This classic 8-bar grime instrumental and pirate radio anthem was a staple at Dirty Canvas and Sidewinder and still regularly features at Wiley’s Eskimo Dance events.
The first remix to arrive back in the No Hats inbox was Hemlock Recordings heavyweight Untold’s “2010 Remix”, a full-on assault complete with his signature experimental percussion. Spooky’s remix comes in strong with it’s dirty saw wave bassline, orchestral stabs and pizzicato strings inspired by the original.

Mella Dee – Ruff Cut EP (Forefront Recordings)(Stream)

Artist: Mella Dee
 Title: Ruff Cut EP
 Label: Forefront Recordings
 Release Date: 10.09.12
 Format: 12″ Vinyl + Digital
Tracklist:

1. Gassed
2. Fazed
3. In The Bits (Vinyl Only)

One half of the prolific duo Mista MenMella Dee, steps up for his second EP of 2012 following up the recent CTRL EP on Coyote Records. Having already had a slew of releases under the Mista Men guise with production partner Woozee (on labels such as Unknown To The UnknownCheap Thrills and Greenmoney); his work has been revered by the likes of MoscaBlackdownBeneath and B Traits. The Ruffcut EP sees the Doncaster-based producer exemplify his skills as a solo producer touching upon House, Garage and even Grime territory for a snapshot of his own personal influences.

With an intro that contains audio from Grime MC Crazy Titch’s infamous cab driver incident; ‘Gassed’ is a fierce bass-led track with heavy claps and hi-hats that are counter-acted with some playful synth work. Whilst on the surface the track seem rigid and stern the variety of percussive elements make it more than suitable for dancefloor outings.

‘Fazed’ has all the bump and swing reminiscent of UK Garage in it’s heyday. Slightly more raucous than it’s pre-2000 predecessors it carries the signature groove and dexterity that have been a focal point of Mella Dee’s solo productions to date. The Ruffcut EP is rounded off by ‘In The Bits,’ a sultry cut that shuffles with propulsive drum programming and is the closest to a fully-fledged House cut out of all three tracks. With this solo EP Mella Dee manages to stay close to his Garage roots without being limited by traditional genre conventions, manipulated his work into something that is a refreshing account of the state of play in 2012.

Listen ‘Hunger’

“After the well received ‘Countryman’ & ‘Stasis (G-Mix)’ 12″ for Blackdown’s ‘Keysound’ imprint Kowton returns with his first release of 2010; this time for the Bristol based label ‘Idle Hands’.

Set up last year from the back room of the Rooted Records, the label aims to showcase the best in raw, grooving and experimental electronic music with a particular focus on the UK underground.

Having picked up lots of interest online Kowton is ready to make his mark in 2010, following features in RA, Fact Magazine and Blackdown’s own blog.

The two tracks selected for the release: ‘Basic Music Knowlege’ & ‘Hunger’ operate in the musical middle ground between the darkly swung garage of El-B and the dubstep pioneers, and the submerged techno sound of STL and New World Aquarium.

DJ and radio support has so far come from Appleblim, Mary Anne Hobbs, 2562 and Kevin Gorman, amongst others.”
