Terror Danjah Presents Hardwired (Preview)

Following on from the release of his much-lauded sophomore album, Dark Crawler on Hyperdub last September, Grime lynchpin Terror Danjah returns to the fold with a brand new label compilation from his own Hardrive Records imprint, entitled Hardwired. Featuring label highlights from Joker, Champion, Bok Bok and Royal-T alongside previously unreleased original material and remixes from Kode 9,Falty DL,  Zed Bias, Swindle, D.O.K and PJam amongst others - Hardwired is an audio scrapbook of some of Terror Danjah’s favourite producers and peers all on one record.

Those familiar with the labels output thus far will be glad to see the inclusion Joker & Terror Danjah’s Gully Goon Estate (a collaborative take on the formers’ 2008 hit Gully Brook Lane), Champion’s ubiquitous UK Funky roller Lose Control and Bok Bok’s 80′s Electro meets Grime remix of Mz Bratt’s Selecta on the compilation.

One of the standout new tracks on Hardwired comes from resurgent Grime producer PJam, whose much sought after Arizona Skyz VIP progresses from Grime into Jungle territory in an epic 8-minute journey - the juxtaposition of rough drum breaks with melancholic harped synths shows just why he’s been talked up by the likes of Night Slugs and Butterz as one of the Grime scenes ones-to-watch for 2013.

Weighing in with fresh productions for the album are fellow Butterz brethren Swindle on the P-Funk infused Funktion, frequent Terror Danjah collaborator D.O.K with his ode to UK Garage Cardio and a dream collaboration between Zed Bias and Terror Danjah with a meeting of the musical minds on downtempo affair Iceberg History. 

Hyperdub boss Kode 9 also gets in the action too with the distorted and trippy Ice whilst NYC’s Falty DL chimes in with a colourful re-rub of one of Terror Danjah’s most notable instrumentals, Zumpi Huntah to round off an action packed array of tracks that more than make up for a quiet 2012 for the Hardrive label.

Champion Ft. Princess Nyah – Crazy (w/Terror Danjah & D.O.K Remix) – Formula Records(Stream)

Once again UK Funky wunderkind Champion serves up another sultry vocal cut – this time enlisting the services of songstress Princess Nyah. ‘Crazy’ begins with a cluster of bongo drums and and colourful funk synths that escalate into a flurry of bassline stabs and groove-laden percussion.

Princesss Nyah’s vocals sit comfortably on this production but still work well with the rugged drum programming that Champion has mastered since his ‘Motherboard’ debut in 2011. As Princess Nyah vents her frustration at a disloyal member of the opposite sex, the low end basslines become more intense and boisterous and this only adds to the smooth but gritty nature of the track.

On the flipside Hardrive head honcho Terror Danjah teams up with D.O.K for a haunted re-rub that still retains the danceable element of the original, but comes with the signature Terror Danjah cackle and gremlins soundbytes. The pair do their best to increase the tracks intensity with 16-bar beat pattern switch ups and haunting chords throughout which gives the track a unexpected but welcomed Grime makeover.

Having been a staple in sets from the likes of Scratcha, Roska, Dusk & Blackdown and Target towards the end of 2011, ‘Crazy’ has picked up where Champion left off with ‘Sensitivity’ and shows just why his work with vocals has been so highly revered as of late.

After releasing two highly sought-after EP’s this year in the shape of Motherboard and Lighter, one of UK funky’s most prolific producers wastes no time and strikes again with Sensitivity - something a little less aggressive than usual that still maintains the danceable groove that Champion is renown for.

Off the back of her summer collaboration, Full Attention with Terror Danjah, Ruby Lee Ryder lends her vocals to this silky Champion production. With her delicate vocal harmonies she sings in a lullaby like fashion which compliments the subtle synth stabs and refined chopped up bassline.

Champion’s signature raw drum programming is still on show here, only less prominent than on his previous efforts, which gives the track plenty of natural rhythm and also compliments its sultry nature. Sensitivity has gained early support from Mistajam, Marcus Nasty and Cameo as well as featuring on Ben UFO’s current Rinse 16 compliation.

The B-side sees Champion in more familiar dancefloor territory with the unrelenting Tun Up Di Bass bound to please fans of 130 BPM bass music from the likes of Redlight and Roska.
