Grievous Angel – Kleer (Forefront Recordings)(preview)

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 22, 2012 by E.N.

Artist: Grievous Angel
Title: Kleer
Label: Forefront Recordings
Release Date: 30th April
Format: 12” Vinyl & Digital
Catalogue No: FORE004

Tracklisting:

1. Grievous Angel – Kleer
2. J Beatz – Subwoofer (Grievous Angel Remix)

This is a welcome return from Sheffield-based producer Grievous Angel who has been known for his slew of edits and live remixes – whether it be Grime, Dancehall, House or UK Funky. Having done this for Keysound label-mates Dusk & Blackdown as well as random re-works of productions from artists like Wiley (check 2009’s Ice Rick refix under the alias of Bubblez), Grievous Angel has got an eye for recycling existing ideas but is no slouch when it comes to his original productions either. His new EP on Forefront recordings see’s him manifest his love of UK Funky with two cuts that showcase his ability to move dancefloors with crispy drums and the undeniable swing of House and Garage.

Lead track ‘Kleer’ is built up around grandiose arpeggios over percussive drums that mirror the brutal urgency of UK Funky and drum programming of Dutch house. Whilst the basslines are militant, the addition of the whirring synths adds an air of smoothness to proceedings and builds a sense of eerie tension around the otherwise stomping effort.

On the flipside is his remix of J Beatz’ ‘Subwoofer’ (previously released on Forefront) oozes tropical vibrations with a tribal-esque beat pattern that ebbs and flows effortlessly and will work as a great tool in club sets. Rhythmically the remix possesses all the swagger of early Cooly G and Roska efforts yet there’s an underlying influence of dub as the subtle low-end bassline becomes more prominent as the track progresses.

On October 11, Bill Laswell’s MOD Technologies presents the brand new Method Of Defiance release, “Dub Arcanium Arcandrum.” This new album offers remix and dub style versions of tracks that originally appeared on the 2010 Method Of Defiance albums “Jahbulon” & “Incunabula” and features remixes from Scientist, Prefuse 73, Mad Professor, SubCode, Dr. Israel, MRC Riddims (the production/DJ team of Oktopus (dalek) & MRC (from Ifwhen & All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors), Perdurabo 6 and Bill Laswell.

In October 2010, Bill Laswell launched his brand new M.O.D. Technologies label with “Jahbulon” the first in a series of three releases from the group Methods Of Defiance – the collaborative project featuring vocalists Dr. Israel and Hawkman, legendary bassist/producer, Bill Laswell, keyboardist / Funkadelic – icon, Bernie Worrell, post-modern / futurist drummer Guy Licata, Toshinori Kondo and DJ Krush. The music is a blend of Rock, Dub, Roots, Reggae, Dancehall, Drum and Bass, Electronica and reflects the eclectic words from which each Methods Of Defiance artist floats in.

The second of three releases came in the way of “Incunabula” (instrumental versions of “Jahbulon”) while the series closes out with radical new interpretations of the tracks on “Dub Arcanium Arcandrum.” Scientist starts it off with a retouching of the single “One World” and later reenters with a ganja smoked up “Herb is Burnin”(dub style, of course), & he tosses a disordered ordered mix at the end to make it all fair. Prefuse 73 pushes his space-age hip hop way in, via the future, with his take on a piece from “Incunabula” (and you thought the original was out). Mad professor stumbles in dubbin’ his ass off. SubCode, a Moroccan remixer we have been chasing for a while, remixes as if his life depended on it, the Hawk track “Do or Die”.

Dr Israel remixes two tracks, one of his and one of Hawk’s and this is something we wish he would do more of, the man can remix, damn it. MRC Riddims, the production/DJ team of Oktopus (dalek) & MRC (from Ifwhen & All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors) join in with a reshaping of “Elijah’s Lament” done all Krooklyn style. Bill Laswell not to be upstaged, contributes two mixes from Incunabula, a dub out and an ambient version of “Quantum Echo”. Perdurabo 6, via the Basque speaking part of Spain, gives his almost 6 minute take on “One World” quite pleasant, really.

Tracklisting

01 One World Dub – Scientist
02 Encode Armour Feed Version 1 – Prefuse 73
03 Elijah’s Lament Mad Professor Mix – Mad Professor
04 Do or Die Remix – SubCode

Download:Mosca -FACT mix 199 (56 tracks in 100 minutes)

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on November 5, 2010 by E.N.

This morning’s FACT mix – the 199th episode in the series – is a marathon session from one of the most rewarding artists to emerge from the UK this year, Mosca.

Picked as one of our producers to watch back in January, Mosca opened 2010 with the first release on Night Slugs (‘Square One’, backed with the epic ‘Nike’), and one of the highlights of Fabric’s Elevator Music compilation in ‘Gold Bricks, I See You’. A propulsive remix of Four Tet followed, along with hip-hop tempo neck-snapper ‘Tilt Shift’ (forthcoming on Fat City), and listeners to his or Jackmaster’s recent sets will have already heard ‘Got Me Wrong’, a Niche-indebted rush that’s so larger-than-life it reloads itself. Seriously.

The best thing about Mosca’s discography so far is that none of these tunes sound particularly alike; whereas many producers are happy to make their name with a distinctive sound and then milk it for all its worth, Mosca’s already proved hard to pin down after a year on the radar. This week sees the release of one of his most satisfying productions to date, his remix of T. Williams and Terri Walker’s ‘Heartbeat’, which combines lounge house flavours with broken beat, a cut-up vocal climax and an outrageously fat bassline.

To celebrate, he’s worked overtime on this FACT mix, a dizzying 56-tracks-in-100-minutes affair which spans juke, jungle, hip-hop, dancehall, grime, techno and bassline, with new tracks from Pearson Sound, Jay Weed, Spooky and Girl Unit as well as himself.

by Method of Defiance

& Gigi in October

Grammy-winning electric bassist, producer, and re-mixer Bill Laswell has worked with many of music’s biggest names on the planet, including Herbie Hancock, Laurie Anderson,  George ClintonBrian EnoTony Williams, Mick Jagger, Williams Burroughs, Afrika Bambaataa, Motorhead, John Lydon, Bootsy Collins, Carlos Santana, Matisyahu, Anthony Braxton, Sting, Zakir Hussein, John Zorn, and hundreds more from the Americas, Africa The Caribbean, Europe, The Middle East, China, and Japan.  Laswell has built a reputation on consistently working with a diverse array of artists, and rejecting the restrictions of genre, tradition, and commerce in favor or taking risks and uniting seemingly disparate voices.  It is with this ethos that he has formed the record label M.O.D. Technologies, which is set to release albums this October by the group Method of Defiance and one of Ethiopia’s most famous contemporary vocalists, Gigi. In addition, the label is planning releases from Dr. Israel, Gnawa Fusion, Afa Negus, and DJ Krush in the near future.

Method of Defiance is an all-star cast that consists of the following members:

BILL LASWELL (see collaborations above)

A cross-generational affair that incorporates elements of reggae, hip hop, dancehall, dub, electronica, rock, roots music and more. The beauty lies within its ability to touch on multiple overlapping cultural reference points.

This will be followed (October 19th) by Incunabula a spontaneous improvisation of musical interaction. The album’s lineup includes Bill Laswell on bass and dub efx, Bernie Worrell on keyboards, Guy Licata on drums, Dr. Israel on dub efx, turntable master DJ Krushand on electric trumpet Japan’s own, sound and fury – Toshinori Kondo with a special appearance by keyboard legend Herbie Hancock.

Ending the trilogy in Jan 2011 with the remix project Dub Arcanum Arcandrum a mix of both Jahbulon (the vocal) and Incunabula (the instrumental) by Bill Laswell, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Mad Professor, Dr. Israel, DJ Krush, and others.
