D-Noise – In Time

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , on April 10, 2014 by E.N.

D-Noise - In TimeD-Noise – aka Nick Denisov began his musical career as a club DJ in Tula, a small town south of Moscow. Confined to the soundlab by the frosty claws of Old Man Winter’s grip in rural Russia, Nick kept warm by conducting sonic experiments which soon led to his first EP “Digital Winter.” Soon enough in 2004, he moved to Moscow and built his reputation as a techno and DnB DJ. During this time, he continued to evolve as a producer, releasing an EP picked up by Baroque Records. Teaming up with S Sider he eventually established himself as a resident DJ for Deepcontrol Records. D-Noise continues to produce under his own label Lumine Records and we are excited to be releasing his latest EP – “In Time.”

“In Time” like many of his previous works, evokes the spirit of winter. This 3 track concept album starts off with a melancholy snowbound vibe but eventually releases into the posi- tive force of creation that is hatched from this reclusion. Deep and organic this work bends and twists timing, slowly unfreezing from arctic darkness. The beginning paves a solemn path with live and twisted string recordings which mutate and melt giving away to beaming rays of synthery backed by driving digital drumwork. The melodies are distinctly rooted to Russia which is a refreshing new taste for the Western EDM scene. We can surely expect to hear more from D-Noise

Thievery Corporation – Saudade

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 20, 2014 by E.N.

Thievery Corporation - SaudadeWhen they met in the mid-1990s, Thievery Corporation’s Eric Hilton and Rob Garza instantly bonded over their shared passion for bossa nova. Dedicating their 1996 debut ‘Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi’ to bossa nova pioneer Antonio Carlos Jobim, the Washington, D.C.-based duo have spent nearly two decades creating boundary-warping, complexly crafted electronic music partly inspired by bossa nova’s intricate rhythms and lush textures. Now, with their seventh studio album ‘Saudade,’

Thievery Corporation present their first release devoted entirely to the Brazilian-born genre that first connected them. “We always try to progress into something different and stretch our musical chops, and taking a whole album to dive into this one sound seemed like a really great way to do that,” says Hilton. Adds Garza: “It’s a bit of a departure for us, but at the same time these are our roots, this is what brought us together. It’s us coming full circle from electronic music back to something organic before we move on to our next chapter.”

Released on their own label ESL Music, ‘Saudade’ borrows its title from a Portuguese word meaning “a longing for something or someone that is lost, a contented melancholy, or, simply, the presence of absence.” “Saudade is the essence or feeling of true bossa nova,” explains Hilton, who names “those warm, soulful, melancholic vocals” as one of the elements of bossa nova that’s most alluring to him.

Drawing influence from classic Brazilian performers like Antonio Carlos Jobim, Gal Costa, and Luis Bonfá—along with Serge Gainsbourg, Ennio Morricone, and more modern artists like electro-samba pioneer Isabelle Antena—Saudade achieves its delicate yet deeply sensuous sound with the help of more than a dozen guest musicians. With each track sung by one of five female vocalists (including longtime Thievery cohort LouLou Ghelichkhani, newcomer Elin Melgarejo, Nouvelle Vague singer Karina Zeviani, Argentine chanteuse Natalia Clavier, and former Bitter:Sweet singer/songwriter Shana Halligan), the endlessly mesmerizing album also features such guests as U.N.K.L.E. drummer Michael Lowery, Argentine singer/songwriter Federico Aubele, and master Brazilian percussionist Roberto Santos.

Thomas Blondet – FutureWorld +New Video Premiere

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 6, 2014 by E.N.

thomas blondet

FutureWorld, the debut album from acclaimed Washington, DC DJ/producer,Thomas Blondet, is out now on Rhythm & Culture Music.

FutureWorld is genre bending, multicultural, and forward thinking aural journey that defines the Rhythm & Culture sound. Furthermore, Blondet’s project highlights his production sensibilities and widespread vision garnered by the multitude of influences living in the nation’s capital. His impeccable ability to mesh melody with infectious rhythms makes this a dance release as well as an insurmountable task in itself.

FutureWorld blends together Jamaican toasters with Indian musical traditions, fusing harmoniously within a landscape of swirling synthesizer lines over a terrain of modern dance rhythms (Chan Ve). Gentle Spanish vocals float alongside cinematic Middle-Eastern melodies (Un Amor) evoking images of streaming water flowing from a fountain in an ornate Andalusian palace.

Blondet, playing the roles of artist, producer, and curator achieves this hybrid by carefully selecting a host of vocal collaborators including reggae legend Monsoon, Carol C (of SiSe), Tina M, and French vocalist Leyla Chatti. Blondet’s creative collaborators also include Kiran Gandhi (of M.I.A.) who played percussion on Curry Flava and Croatian musician, Fillip Novosel, with whom he teams up on Savo Vodo, resulting in powerful Baltic vocals and virtuosic musicianship. Combined with Blondet’s DJ-friendly beats, the result is a statement of how small the world has truly become.

Comprised of 13 compositions, FutureWorld carries the dialogue of a modern global community as it creates the future of a world together.

1. Chan Ve
2. Un Amor
3. Check One
4. Dil Da Jani
5. Beyond the Balkans
6. Tu Va Partir
7. Curry Flava
8. Savo Vodo
9. In This World
10. Dil Da Jani Reprise
11. Supreme Dub
12. Son of Fakir
13. In This World Dub

Illum Sphere – Ghosts Of Then And Now

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , on March 1, 2014 by E.N.

ILLUM SPHERE GHOSTS
Ryan Hunn, AKA Illum Sphere, is founder of Manchester’s renowned club night Hoya:Hoya, has remixed Radiohead, toured the world’s best club nights and released music on some of its finest imprints – 3024, Tectonic, Young Turks, and now Ninja Tune, where he’s found a long term home.

His album arrives on the back of eager expectation. If anyone seemed set to make one of the standout albums of the era, it was Illum Sphere. The good news is that he’s delivered in spades.

Ghosts Of Then And Now has been deliberately and uncompromisingly conceived as a full length record; an album in the traditional sense, full of music that couldn’t be more modern, whilst nodding to Hunn’s various influences.

Opener “Liquesce” – which features the drumming of Shigeto – is aptly titled, conjuring as it does a sense of blissful dissolution. It also contains a haunting refrain that’s deceptively familiar, the sort of melody line you’ll hear for years. The song ends abruptly (and cleverly) in a deep intake of breath, as if preparing itself for the album ahead.

“At Night” shows not only how adept with vocals Illum Sphere is – layering Mai Nestor of Facit’s beautiful voice into his music in a startlingly effective fashion – but also just how far he pushes the template of his form. Elements of all the go-to genres’ glitch, bass and drum experimentation are present here, but Hunn has mastered them completely, using them only for genuine emotive effect.

“The Road” is the first of three fruitful collaborations with Shadowbox, AKA Bonnie Baxter. Driving drums with an industrial edge merge with anxious synths and looping, lilting melodies, the distinctive, rich vocal both seductive and foreboding.

“It’ll Be Over Soon” builds from an exploratory, ominous groove to a frenetic, restless release, in a study of mood that approaches the existential. “Lights Out / In Shinjuku’s” deep bass and elemental, sci-fi synths steer the album towards its transcendental ending in “Embryonic.” This the final part of the three Shadowbox collaborations, see her return to glorious effect. A simple, shuffle-swing drum and haunting melody give way to abruptly to ocean-deep bass and vast, emotive melody.

Ghosts Of Then And Now is further proof that electronic music is taking giant leaps forward. This is a record so rich in ideas, themes, textures and writing that it will draw the listener in time and time again. As such, it will take its place alongside the best works in the form.

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 11, 2014 by E.N.

NAIA EP
Out Now on Noisy Meditation
NAIA is a global experimental collaboration between vocalist Malena Pérez (P-Vine, Mobilee, Objektivity) and electronica/bass producers FIRST AID, Stiver, blacksix and Godfather Sage. Moody, reflective and deep, the first release is a four-track downtempo EP infused with soulful, melancholic vocals, expansive chords and driving basslines. Thematically, NAIA explores the shadow side of human emotion while planting seeds of healing.

About Malena Pérez:
Malena Pérez is a vocalist of Cuban and German-American descent originally from Atlanta, GA. Her work includes two studio albums, Free To Fly (2004) and Stars (2006), and various collaborations including the 2007 deep house hit “I Can’t Go Under” produced by Dennis Ferrer. Her third studio album, Offering, will be released in March 2014.
