Around 7 Back To Basics(preview)

Back To Basics is the debut album from Around 7 and the first release on new label Robsoul Jazz, an offshoot of the well-established Robsoul Recordings house label run by Phil Weeks.  The album and new label focus on laid-back jazz, hip hop and broken beats, and also reflect the art of sampling.  Hip Hop influences such as J Dilla and DJ Premier are in heavy evidence, alongside the jazz of Miles Davis, Bill Evans and the legendary Blue Note Records.

Around 7 is the Parisian based Sébastien Guertau whose music career began as a bassist and trumpet player in a jazz/funk band.  After learning to play keyboard and discovering the Akai MPC sampler and software like Cubase, Sébastien merged everything together to create his own tracks based around live instrumentation and samples.

The result is the music on Back To Basics. Initially a bunch of separate tracks, Sébastien played them to his friend Phil Weeks who, in typical decisive fashion, declared’ “That’s dope.  I’m going to start a new label with you are the first artist.”

The aim of the tracks was to sound acoustic through the use of the jazz samples, but underpinned by rough old school hip hop beats.  The sample usually forms the starting point for each track, as Sébastien explains, “Like for The 7th Sin, I cut it in little pieces to do something different. It makes new melodies or harmonies and I build around it. For other tracks like Butter & Fly I started with the groove because the beat with the little voice in the back was the main ingredient.  Increasingly, I like to edit the track in a natural feeling – I think this the part that jazz has in my music, improvising with samples like a musician with his instrument.”

LAPALUX – “NOSTALCHIC” ALBUM OUT 25TH MARCH (BRAINFEEDER)

In a world in which upstart DiY talent is flooding the gates of electronic music, a few recent voices have been so strong as to be startling. Lapalux – AKA 25-year-old Stuart Howard – is certainly one such. As singular as a brilliant artist always should be, his instinctive understanding of the atmospheric power of texture grips the ear immediately on listening. ‘Nostalchic’ is his debut album, mission statement, and the climax of many years of studying his craft. The amalgam of words that make the title is aptly, and perhaps knowingly chosen. The album evokes nostalgia without ever sounding nostalgic, and Howard may have had his tongue in his chic when he added the second half of the title. The album is his most focused document to date, adding his beloved R&B and soul into elements of house and hip hop, all with the trademark Lapalux finish; infectious, lopsided swing and achingly deep texture.

‘Nostalchic’ not only has all the hallmarks of a great album – a sense of cohesive purpose, its own themes, arcs and internal logic – it’s an album that could only have been made in electronic music. Howard understands the power and capabilities that are offered by his form, and he’s used them to the full. To this day, Lapalux remains the only British artist on the Los Angeles based label.

Emancipator ‘Dusk To Dawn’+Tour

Emancipator (Doug Appling) sold out over 21 headlining shows in 2012, including venues like San Francisco’s Mezzanine, NYC’s Highline Ballroom, and Denver’s Ogden Theater, was praised by The New York Times and toured with Pretty Lights. However it is clear that 2013 will be his biggest year to date, kicking off with the release of his third album ‘Dusk To Dawn’ and a 44 date North American tour in January.

Blending lush, warm, organic electronic sounds, with hip-hop and classical Americana, might not be an easy or obvious choice, but the classically-trained Emancipator does just that, creating a natural mix of beats and melody that is all his own. On-stage, Appling performs with the violinist Ilya Goldberg, creating a dynamic and captivating live show that reinforces the fusion at the heart of Emancipator’s music.

His previous two albums ‘Soon It Will Be Cold Enough’ and ‘Safe In The Steep Cliffs’ showcased the luxuriant blend of instrumentation and drums that his rapidly growing and diverse fan-base has come to love. ‘Minor Cause’, and ‘Dusk To Dawn’, continue where Emancipator left off.

Throughout ‘Minor Cause’ Appling’s beats and piano draw you forward, before Goldberg’s beautiful strings are introduced, raising the urgency and bringing the track to its crescendo. It’s a fitting lead single, illustrating the inimitable and ever-engaging blend of beat, harmony and melody that underpin Emancipator’s music.

‘Minor Cause’ will be accompanied by a music video shot in the breathtaking Oregon forest, Appling’s home state, directed by adventure photographer, Ben Moon.

Dusk To Dawn will be released on Loci Records on January 29. Minor Cause was released released on January 9.

It’s been a year since the magnificent ‘Dark Is The Sun’ first enchanted listeners back in 2011, and we’re thrilled to announce the next installment of mesmerizing non-contemporary jazz byThe Greg Foat Group with their new album Girl And Robot With Flowers.

Evading the dreaded ‘second album syndrome’ with consummate ease, Girl And Robot With Flowers is a sonic soundscape of epic proportions that leaves Dark is the Sun in the dust while propelling the listener into infinity and beyond!

With a doff of the hat to sci-fi writer Brian Aldiss, we’re whisked off on a thematic journey into the emotive and enthralling realms of cinematic jazz, seductive ambience and exciting, majestic drama. Often unpredictable and certainly never dull, British pianist/composer/arranger Greg Foat uses everything from brass bands and kettle drums, to Moog synthesizer and harmonium, to take us above and beyond the stratosphere of our senses.

As with Dark Is the Sun, this album was recorded in a unique, pure analogue studio in Sweden to capture the full warmth and dynamic range of the wide variety of instruments utilized. The spacious, high quality sound that was achieved by recording direct to tape through high quality vintage equipment is absolutely impeccable, revealing in stunning detail a magical atmosphere the likes of which is rarely heard in the current climate of digitalization and mp3s.

Over the years Greg Foat has collaborated with musicians and artists such as Wendy James, Questlove (of The Roots), The Black Lips, and Justice and The Bees. This past year has been a busy one with tours of Europe and the UK, exposing their music to seasoned audiences; Jamie Cullum, Chris Evans, Gilles Peterson, Craig Charles, Ozwald Boateng, Helena Christiansen, Jude Law, Benicio Del Toro, Lindsay Lohan are just a few of the many faces who have enjoyed the music of The Greg Foat Group.
