Sarantis ‘Electric City’ LP(Preview)

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 1, 2013 by E.N.

Sarantis 'Electric City' LPElectric City is the new album from Sarantis OUT NOW via Senseless Records. It takes it’s name from an imagined urban landscape caught somewhere between London and the dystopian sprawl imagined by John Carpenter, Warriors and other classic 80s sci-fi. The music takes audible cues from the soundtracks to those films; bold, raw synths and big drums reverberate but also a melting pot of musical styles ranging from motor city techno and electro funk through to cutting edge grime, bashment and footwork.

Vocal tracks come from Parly B (Mungo’s Hifi), South London’s rising grime star M.I.K. & Dialect, a renowned freestyle MC and regular guest on Westwood and 1Xtra.

Building on previous releases for Senseless, Black Acre and Chrissy Murderbot’s Loose Squares, on this LP Sarantis expands his sonic palette and allows all the inspiration and influence collected in the past half decade to breathe and expand. Starting out from his soundsystem roots in Leeds, UK, Sarantis has worked his way in to the record boxes of people like Skream, Brenmar, DMZ & Mary Anne Hobbs with a catalogue spanning six years and work with vocalists like Warrior Queen and Iration Steppas.

DUBBEL DUTCH WHITE LABEL 12″ DROPS TODAY
Marc Glasser AKA Dubbel Dutch throws down two original tracks and some of the illest RnB refixs we’ve heard in forever on DA-011, a limited white label 12″. Pulling from synth heavy house and late 90’s golden era UK R’n’Garage, these blistering bangers are PURE LIGHT. Check “Fem Pressure” and DD’s remix of Kell’s “Be My #2″ to see just how future his sound is. Released in collaboration with Dave Quam’s Free Bass label. Already getting his tracks dropped by NguzuNguzu, Girl Unit, Bok Bok, Untold, and Sinden. Dubbel Dutch doesn’t play. VINYL YOU CAN TOUCH
FACT MAG SAYS: “the most realised embodiment of Dutch’s wide-reaching, net-digging aesthetic to date”

Bill Salas is a Chicago boy through and through. Sure, the producer better known as Brenmar resides in Brooklyn these days, but his tracks clearly demonstrate that the guy brought his hometown’s love of hip-hop, R&B, house, and juke along with him. Over the past year, he’s built a name for himself on the back of bootleg remixes of DJ Deeon, Cassie, and Aaliyah, not to mention a few of his own originals. Early next month, he’ll be dropping an official release—the At It Again EP on Discobelle—but that’s just the beginning; another single is planned for Ikonika and Optimum’s Hum and Buzz imprint, as are collaborative efforts with LA duo Nguzunguzu and Washington producer Cedaa. (The latter project is known as Amber, and the collabo’s first offering appears right here on this mix.) On top of his work in the studio, Brenmar is also in the process of starting up a NY version of London party So Bones. (The UK edition is headed up by Robin Carolan of Tri Angle Records and 20 Jazz Funk Greats.) Given his busy schedule, it’s borderline miraculous that we pinned Brenmar down long enough to put together this exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series, and it’s fair to say that he’s gone above and beyond our expectations. To be honest, we would have been pleased with a standard-issue DJ mix, but Brenmar included several new edits, all of which are exclusive to the podcast and will never appear anywhere else. On top of that, he even took our (admittedly dated) podcast intro and fashioned his own remix out of it! Oh yeah, he also found the time to tour through UK bass, house, hip-hop, R&B, and more. The transitions are quick and Brenmar serves up plenty of different flavors, but we’re happy to taste them all.
