Terror Danjah Presents Hardwired (Preview)

Terror Danjah Presents HardwiredFollowing on from the release of his much-lauded sophomore album, Dark Crawler on Hyperdub last September, Grime lynchpin Terror Danjah returns to the fold with a brand new label compilation from his own Hardrive Records imprint, entitled Hardwired. Featuring label highlights from JokerChampionBok Bok and Royal-T alongside previously unreleased original material and remixes from Kode 9,Falty DL,  Zed BiasSwindleD.O.K and PJam amongst others – Hardwired is an audio scrapbook of some of Terror Danjah’s favourite producers and peers all on one record.
Those familiar with the labels output thus far will be glad to see the inclusion Joker & Terror Danjah’s Gully Goon Estate (a collaborative take on the formers’ 2008 hit Gully Brook Lane), Champion’s ubiquitous UK Funky roller Lose Control and Bok Bok’s 80’s Electro meets Grime remix of Mz Bratt’s Selecta on the compilation.
One of the standout new tracks on Hardwired comes from resurgent Grime producer PJam, whose much sought after Arizona Skyz VIP progresses from Grime into Jungle territory in an epic 8-minute journey – the juxtaposition of rough drum breaks with melancholic harped synths shows just why he’s been talked up by the likes of Night Slugs and Butterz as one of the Grime scenes ones-to-watch for 2013.
Weighing in with fresh productions for the album are fellow Butterz brethren Swindle on the P-Funk infused Funktion, frequent Terror Danjah collaborator D.O.K with his ode to UK Garage Cardio and a dream collaboration between Zed Bias and Terror Danjah with a meeting of the musical minds on downtempo affair Iceberg History.
Hyperdub boss Kode 9 also gets in the action too with the distorted and trippy Ice whilst NYC’s Falty DL chimes in with a colourful re-rub of one of Terror Danjah’s most notable instrumentals, Zumpi Huntah to round off an action packed array of tracks that more than make up for a quiet 2012 for the Hardrive label.

About

Slick Shoota is a producer from Trondheim, Norway who has developed his own unique musical style—a combination of juke, garage, booty bass, breaks, and old school jungle. He’s already been getting attention for his remix work, covering a diverse range of artists and labels: Fuzzy Logik (Safe & Sound), Dev79 (Slit Jockey), Heartbreak (Mad Decent), Mr. Mitch (Butterz), Joss Ryan (DVA Music), Falty DL (Planet Mu), and more.

His first EP for Loose Squares contains five tracks of forward-thinking, boundary-pushing juke hybrids—from booty-meets-grime party-smashers like “Eye Turn Red” and “Hit The Flow” (featuring up-and-comer5kin&bone5), to the soulful, garage-inspired “Love You You You” and “Beby”. We here at Loose Squares are really excited to present these new sounds. A must have for 2012!

Lone “Galaxy Garden” on R&S Records,May 7th

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on February 23, 2012 by E.N.

Over the past couple of years, Manchester-based producer Lone (a.k.a. Matt Cutler) has become a fully fledged reinvention of his former self. Leaving behind the hip-hop seasoned abstraction and hazy beatscapes of his notable Ecstasy & Friends and Lemurian albums for a quicker-paced sound that draws on a much heavier Chicago house / Detroit Techno and early 90’s London rave/hardcore sound. With his last album proper Emerald Fantasy Tracks & last year’s R&S debut Coreshine Voodoo, we saw a honing of these styles. Continuing his ethereal journey through space and time where these previous two outings left off, new album Galaxy Garden – that you will hopefully have in your ears right now – is without doubt his most complete body of work to date.

Artist: Lone
Title: Galaxy Garden
Label: R&S Records
Release: 07.05.2012

Tracklist
01 New Colour
02 The Animal Pattern
03 As A Child (With Machinedrum)
04 Lying In The Reeds
05 Dragon Blue Eyes
06 Crystal Caverns 1991
07 Raindance
08 Dream Girl / Sky Surfer
09 Earth’s Lungs
10 Cthulhu (With Machinedrum)
11 Stands Tidal Waves
12 Spirals (With Anneka)

The varied excursions on display unearth new corners to the wunderkind, whilst maintaining his signature sound and cinematic overtones. Opener New Colour lays down the album’s mandate with layers of symbiotic sound-scapes. On into The Animal Pattern, a rolling 8-bit bastardisation where visions of Out Run’s Splash Wave come flooding back again. Nomrex label head machine drum makes an appearance on two tracks adding his hazy vocals to As A Child & Cthulhu. The latter evolving into a mid tempo broken roller with key stabs which wouldn’t sound out of place on a Japan record.

Thing of beauty, Lying in the Reeds finds Cutler in one of his more melodic, melancholic and reflective moods. This gives way to the ambient drone of Dragon Blue Eyes and through to Crystal Caverns 91; revival stabs, hardcore remnants, a frenetic cadence and we’re already half way through the album. Two uptempo, blissed out stuttered motion bangers – proceed in the form of Raindance & Dream & Girl/Sky Surfer. It’s Raindance and the incredible Earth’s Lungs where he wears his love of Aphex Twin and Warp most prominently, all the time maintaining a very Lone take on it. The album closes this Lone chapter with vocalist Anneka – who’s worked with the likes of Falty DL, Starkey, Ital Tek, Vex’d - and the track Spirals, which is the closest you’ll get to Cutler writing a pop song.

A rollercoaster ride of playful nods to a plethora of scenes and influences past, present and future, a residency at Manchester hot-spot Hoya:Hoya, upcoming shows all over the place, support for his tracks from the likes of Caribou, Diplo, Kode 9, Dark Sky, Rustie, James Holden, Martyn, Joy Orbison – to name just a few – remixes for Radiohead, Tensnake & Underworld already under his belt; it’s going to be quite a year for Lone. Cutler ended 2010 with his tracks Pineapple Crush and Once In A While featured in every respectable ‘Best of 2010’ roundup (Resident Advisor, Phonica, Juno & Fact Magazine). This an album to be treasured and one that will no doubt, end up in even more polls come the end of twenty twelve.

Falty Dl – Make it Difficult / Jack Your Job (ACNY12x1)(preview)

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , on June 6, 2011 by E.N.

After looking at New York circa 95/96 we fast forward to the future with Falty DL. Another 12 that’s taken us a bit longer than it should to release, this 2 tracker from NY’s insanely prolific/the-hardest-working Falty DL was supposed to a collaborative 12 but when we couldn’t find someone to keep with his high octane pace he rolled up his sleeves and finished it off himself. As tight and punchy as you expect, this is two addictive slabs of fast paced house with a distinctly 90s US influence with a shout to Minister Farrakhan on vocal duties.

SVET004: 141 by BNJMN (preview)

The Belgrade, Serbia based label Svetlana Industries today announced it will release it’s fourth recording on 13th June.

The record comes from BNJMN, the techno alias of enigmatic British producer Ben Thomas. As Jackhigh he released an astonishing collaboration Tropics EP with Teebs on Svetlana last year, attracting praise from figures as diverse as Hudson Mohawke and Falty DL. He followed that up with a totally different but equally acclaimed album as BNJMN for cult Dutch label Rush Hour earlier this year, which won him a new audience in techno circles, with plays and pladits from figures such as Benji B, Surgeon and Laurent Garnier.

The EP boasts four original tracks that build on BNJMN’s organic techno sound and take it in a new direction, absorbing influences from 2step and garage and the bass production of Burial, and combining it with very Detroit and Drexciyan aquatic sounds, all with Ben’s distinctive nostalgic melodies, filtered through a misty lo-fi haze.
These tracks are complemented by two remixes: Lukid’s extraordinary remix has been described as “looking out of a café window through the rain to an empty beach”, while Kelpe’s remix reveals a new aggressive edge and deep sense of foreboding to his sound.

There’s also a stunning video to accompany the Lukid remix of One Sea produced by new Svetlana signing Devon Hansen. The piece works as much as a piece of modern art as it does a promo, and a public screening is planned.
