Vulgar Refund of Proverbial Shock (stream)

Vulgar Refund Of The Proverbial Shock is a peculiar new electropop “dance” formation who recently sailed across the sea to the artistic haven of Brooklyn, NY.

George La Font and Brice”Brith” Therill are both the driving force of this, crunchy, symphonic, brute and captivated soundscapes, with rhythms that fly apart. Thickened with ruff vocals Public Different has signed a winner here.

For the debut album”aka” it’s definitely a striking start. The Single”Addiction” have proven to make even the most portentous get up and dance.

DJ W!ld -Dirty on Cabin Fever May 14th

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 26, 2012 by E.N.

DJ W!LD is the French music maestro infamous for his DC10 residency and tireless work ethic that keeps the dancefloor brimming with infectious weapons. Now he delivers his first album for Cabin Fever.

A year after his debut artist album, Guillaume Duchastel de Montrouge, aka DJ W!LDreintroduces the world to his raw and groovy sound for his second album, ‘Dirty’. A more straight up honest affair, this concoction of late night jacking cuts hypnotise with clever use of sampling – a nod to his penchant for hip hop – vintage feel and well carved beats.

Dirty’ is true to its namesake, a sensual journey that explores desires and primal instincts and finely balances female and male vocals that weave like serpents in the mix. The album opens quietly with the haunting echoes‘W Train’ and ‘Apres La Plage’, saturating the senses in vivid sound. But it’s not until ‘Voyage’ that we feel the real elusive, unpredictable, and truly underground nature of the album. Frequently returning to quiet interludes and unexpected snapshots of mysterious scenes, ‘Dirty’ is cleverly fashioned for indulging in again and again.

With titles such as ‘All I Want Is U’ and ‘In Love’ its easy to see how inspired W!LD is by the power of emotions and female forces in his life. This can be felt in every moment of ‘Dirty’ along with a deep nostalgia capturing a long lost energy of underground dance music in its current.

‘Dirty’ seethes with vigour and isn’t afraid to push buttons. An album created to be played loud (try title track ‘Dirty’ and the sassy ‘Dream Of Me’ for full effect), it is the perfect warm up for late night adventures or early morning carry-ons. Packing more than a punch, W!LD opens the ears to his journeys across dancefloors over the past few years and cements his reputation as a true body mover.

DJ W!LD became resident at Circo Loco in 2010 and has since travelled the globe with the brand and spent many lost Mondays at the infamous home in DC10 Ibiza. A fixture on Cocoon bookings, W!LD is renowned in the global electronic network  after years spent honing his skills.

Born in the French town Dijon, he was immersed in a world of funk, disco, and groovy beats in the early 90´s and heavily inspired by his hero Laurent Garnier through his residency at L´Enfer. There was no turning back from this point as he immersed himself in this new coming revolution from Detroit techno and Chicago house.

W!LD relocated to Paris in 1996 and became one of the renowned ‘disc-jockeys’ of the emerging scene. He could be seen at The Palace, the Queen and the Rex and was invited to the famous New York club Twilo. After a brief stint living in Brazil, W!ld became one of the leading DJs in the underground gay scene in Europe, providing soundtracks for fashion shows for Thierry Mugler ,Christian Lacroix, and Vivienne Westwood.

In 2005 he created his own label, Catwash with fellow Parisien Chris Carrier and last year he launched his own personal project, W, which saw the launch of his debut album. W!LD has been remixed by many great talents from the burgeoning music scene such as DJ Sneak, Kerri Chandler, Chris Carrier, Hector Morales, Phil Weeks, Chez Damiez and SIS.

Released on Cabin Fever, a label that is famed for tough and upfront dancefloor classics, ‘Dirty’ was the perfect fit to its sound. This special vinyl only re-edit label has previously released a CD compilation but W!LD delivers its first full artist album.

Nomenklatür – Fascinated by The Chaos

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , on January 10, 2012 by E.N.

Nomenklatur was born after the meeting of Oilvier Brucker and Olivier Rossi, two militants of the French underground techno scene during a party in Ostgut Berlin, actually knows as Berghain. They decided to first build a studio, full of analog machines, and release their first album “Gift of Ages” in 2009 on Space Factory, label run by David Carretta. A first album, spreading a dark and barefacedness techno well considered and influenced by the new wave.

After a few remixes and live dates, those two friends are releasing “Fascinated by The Chaos”. Both analog and digital are part of their commitment, mixing between darkness & dreamlike quality. You can listen to the album as a whole, like the soundtrack of a modern Blade Runner. The band admits having been influenced by CP, the writer, during the writing of the album. The recall of a sick society is haunting this second album, machines are dripping with deliquescence of our industrial society.

But we’re not into a despair feeling, it’s a vehicle between electro, pop and new wave, for calling us to dance, like a resistance act… Featurings can be found on the album, like Mini, met via Space Factory, egeria of the canadian underground scene or Yasmine Gate as well. This album is like a thriller, a futuristic movie, every track is a like a trip, a patchy sense of urgency. The listener can now travel into pensive and mournful washes of a post apocalyptic future entirely composed by Nomenklatur.

Frànçois & The Atlas Mountains release new album on Domino USA( February 14, 2012)

Pensive indie pop, delicate electronica, as well as North African guitar stylings and percussion combine on the forthcoming release by Frànçois & The Atlas Mountains. The new album, entitled E Volo Love (Domino USA) releases February 14, 2012.

In a centuries-old French church high on a hill, Malian-style finger-picked guitar riffs bounced off cabaret-ready piano lines. Whispering calabash brushed against shimmering minimal techno. All in service of a dreamy set of songs that became E Volo Love (Domino USA; release: February 14, 2012), tracks that straddle the catchiest of indie rock and electronica and the lush borders of globally inflected experimentation.

This is the world of Fránçois and the Atlas Mountains. Fránçois has opened for incandescent Afrobeat scion Femi Kuti, and he has played with effusive retro-rockers Camera Obscura. He’s leaped unexpectedly onto the indie scene in an English industrial town and learned to embrace the sounds of his native Southwestern France. He’s gotten lost in the outskirts of Fez and dug into the complexities of Senegalese mbalax’s rolling club beats.

Shaped by the quiet influence of West and North African sounds and by the gritty yet friendly vibe of Bristol’s underground arts scene, Fránçois and the Atlas Mountains make a return to roots—hometowns, lost loves, Western pop transformed in the crucibles of the Sahara or Dakar—utterly engaging and fresh.

BIO
Fránçois was raised on Serge Gainsbourg, Jacques Prévert, the classics of French pop and poetry. He also grew up hearing tales from Cameroon, where his mother spent her girlhood. Yet the rural French kid’s mind was blown when he first heard grunge and pounded on a distortion pedal, and he started making his own tapes.

When work took him to Bristol, England, Fránçois immediately jumped into a thriving scene, one that included both the speed-of-weed trip hop of groups like Portishead and Massive Attack, and a DIY-loving arts underground where experimentation and collaboration were welcome. Fránçois, merrily collecting a menagerie of instruments and accompanying himself live on keys he played with his feet, fit in perfectly and soon connected with bands from The Pastels to Movietone to Camera Obscura, who invited him to join.

Yet there are other currents that run through Fránçois’s music and that flow across North and West Africa, back to Europe. Things clicked for Fránçois when he heard the brilliant African blues of Ali Farka Touré and the gritty Sahara rock of Tinariwen. He found himself wandering through Morocco, shadowing groups of Senegalese drummers, trying to master the polyrhythmic spree of Dakar’s dance music (mbalax, made famous by singers like Youssou NDour).

On E Volo Love, these fascinations get folded back into indie rock and electronica in an organic way. Inspired by Touré—and constantly mislaying his picks— Fránçois figured out how to touch the electric guitar strings and approach the bare fingered, rippling sound of Mali’s guitar greats. He invited Tinariwen engineer Jean-Paul Romann to add his imprint to the album.

And almost accidentally, E Volo Love gained an African pulse. As Fránçois was spending some time in his hometown of Saintes, he wound up playing a gig at the old church where the album was eventually recorded, with versatile drummer Amaury Ranger. A dance class had left behind a hand drum and a calabash, and the duo picked them up spontaneously during the show.

“The sound had a power and drive, but was gentle enough not to overwhelm what I was doing,” explains Fránçois. This sound, rich with the church’s natural resonance, blends seamlessly with the drum kit and beats of tracks like the album’s otherworldly opener, “Les Plus Beaux.”

“As we were putting the album together, the idea of return, of palindromes, kept popping up, which was perfect because I recorded the album where I grew up, around things I knew so well but was re-experiencing from the point of view of an adult,” Fránçois reflects. “It’s about things that never move, or things that return: sounds, people, feelings.”

Things that loop back transformed echo throughout E Volo Love, whether it’s the mysterious marimba sample from a field recording that merges into the bittersweet Afro-indie rock of “Edge of Town,” or the overwhelming nostalgia of the electronica-inflected “Bail Eternel.”

Opposites attract and coexist: a French cabaret piano line goes Congotronic on “Piscine,” horns add grit to a gentle indie ballad on “Azrou Tune.” The landscape on the cover looks like a blazing desert, but is actually a freezing morning: “The cover was shot at 7 AM in February on the coldest day you can get,” Fránçois recalls. “It has this strange feeling of things being the opposite at the same time.” Much like tension between airy and earthy that makes E Volo Love shine.

The first ever French Domino signings are ready to spread their wings over indie pop’s vast international landscape. With vivid looks and a slender body, Fránçois builds up castles in Saintonge, France, with Moroccan mountains, British phlegm and sturdy friendships. After seven years of passionate gigs and road trips across Europe which has seen them tour with Electrelane, Camera Obscura and most recently with Mercury-nominated King Creosote & Jon Hopkins, Fránçois & The Atlas Mountains convey a magnetic presence on stage. A deep sense of lightness and sincerity sets in as voices, keyboards and African percussion blend into instant pop.

An open collective, Fránçois & The Atlas Mountains has become a four-piece band over the years. Besides Fránçois who gives the band its name and soul, Amaury Ranger embodies its vibrating body thanks to the sheer intensity of his percussive skills. A new recruit, Scottish Gerard Black made a name for himself playing with Bill Wells and Findo Gask before joining forces with the band and leading an underground dolce vita in Bordeaux. Another Bordeaux stalwart, Pierre aka Petit Fantôme is a local musical treasure.
