Set in the beautiful location of an abandoned 19th century fort, Croatia’s premium showcase of the world’s best underground electronic music, Dimensions Festival adds new names to 2013’s bill. Returning to Croatia will be electronic auteurs Mount Kimbie, tastemaker extraordinaire Gilles Peterson, acoustic techno purveyors Brandt Brauer Frick, garage stalwart Zed Bias, Hyperdub’s King Midas Sound and many more. They will be joining the plethora of previously announced talent including Model 500, Theo Parrish, Moodyman, Dave Clarke, Daphni, Tony Allen, Mala in Cuba, Derrick May, Pantha Du Prince, Ben Klock, Omar S and Dixon.
In addition to the progressive and exciting line-up Dimensions has to offer, the festival’s venue is unlike any other in the world.  Taking place in a 19th Century Fort originally built by the Austrians to defend what was their main naval port, Fort Punta Christo with its courtyard, moat, ballroom and dungeon, feels like a re-discovered forgotten world that is transformed into magical venues for the duration of the festival. The city of Pula, in the stunning region of Istria in Croatia, is steeped in history and home to many ancient Roman buildings, including the magnificent amphitheatre, offering festival goers beautiful and unspoiled natural surroundings to enjoy in addition to the festivals vibe and music.
Partnering with some of the world’s most progressive labels including Eglo, Aus, Hypercolour, Non-Plus, Dial, Hessle Audio, Ostgut, Exit, Leisure Systems and Tri- Angle, Dimensions Festival looks set to cement its status as a credible and distinctive festival for 2013 and beyond. With many names still to be confirmed, Dimensions will be making more announcements throughout 2013, with details of boat parties still to be revealed.

Pangaea to release ‘Release’ a double EP on vinyl and CD in October

“Do your thing, just make sure you’re ahead of the game”, warns ‘Game’, the opening salvo of Release, Pangaea’s new double EP for Hessle Audio. It’s a statement of intent for the entire record, reflecting the increasingly idiosyncratic nature of his music. Release’s eight tracks are entities unto themselves, each a natural evolutionary continuation of the rough and rolling pirate radio techno he began to culture on last year’s Hex and Inna Daze 12″s.

Since his early releases, Pangaea’s music has expanded to reflect the growing diversity of dancefloors, reaching outward to integrate jungle, hardcore, techno and house into its rhythmic axis. The result is an incendiary hybrid form rooted in UK hardcore traditions, where ruffneck MC chatter, static-addled voices and sinewy melodies slip in and out of earshot like ghosts channelled from raves past.

These base materials are put to a variety of different uses across Release’s length. Foremost among them is a swung and sub-heavy vision of UK techno, informed by a love of pirate radio and sound-system music. So instead of remaining locked to a four-to-the-floor pulse, rhythms are splayed outwards into vortices – swirling assemblages of kicks, woodblocks and shrapnel that weave in and around one another. ‘Majestic 12′ explodes from the blocks at blistering speed, repeatedly switching in intensity across its length. Hi-hats keep time above roiling kick-drums on ‘Trouble’ and the aptly titled ‘Time Bomb’, which detonates with a billowing thud at the start of each bar.

Other tracks touch on ideas familiar from Pangaea’s earlier music, but twist them almost beyond recognition. Both ‘Game’ and the ‘Release’ are raw steppers’ tracks, but ruder and more abrasive than anything he’s released to date, while ‘Middleman’ offsets a halfstep shuffle with warm brassy melodies. Release saves its largest curveball for last, though, with the seething ambient of ‘High’, whose murky surfaces are pockmarked by bit-crushed screams.

As co-head of Hessle Audio alongside Pearson Sound and Ben UFO, Pangaea’s exploratory approach on Release also reflects the attitude that’s characterised both his and his label’s approach so far. As dubstep has fallen away, they have refused to simply follow many contemporaries into straightforward house and techno territory. Instead they take their influences as jumping-off points from which to explore, a method that’s led them along new and distinctive pathways in ever-noisier surroundings. Release is no exception – the building blocks used in its construction may be recognisable, but they work in a way you might not have heard before.

Coming at the start of a second year of releases, ‘Diskotopia Various Artists Volume One’ is a showcase of the Diskotopia sound.

The label has been grouped together with labels like Night Slugs, Numbers, Hessle Audio, but Diskotopia take a more borderless approach to electronic dance music. Not just for the club, but also made to be appreciated in any setting, the artists represented on this compilation reference a variety of styles from house, techno, UK garage, post-rock, boogie, R&B, grime and even jazz. Although standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the most current and cutting-edge music around, the Diskotopia output has a strong sense of timelessness, meaning that as well as being very “now”, the sound has a longer shelf-life. The label has rapidly been gaining great support and high praise from likes of Addison Groove, Hyetal, Om Unit, Rinse FM, Boomkat, XLR8R, Fact, Numbers.

Set up by UK ex-pat Matt Lyne (A Taut Line) and Japanese female DJ Am Rhein in Osaka in 2005 as a DJ and visual collective, Diskotopia ran frequent events for four years before moving to Tokyo in 2009. BD1982 joined the crew in late 2010, and helped evolve it into a record label. The ethic behind the label comes directly from the premise of the Diskotopia events: a barrier-free approach to quality music. In 2011 Diskotopia released singles and EPs by A Taut Line, Hong Kong In The 60s, BD1982, Visionist, Greeen Linez and Slackk. Diskotopia remixers have included Optimum + Ikonika (Planet Mu, Hyperdub, Night Slugs), Starkey (Ninja Tune, Planet Mu), 80s legendary post-punk act Dominatrix, Royalty, BNJMN (Rush Hour), Photomachine, Murlo, Pacheko.

Looking back on the myriad of ways that the genre now known quite loosely as ‘bass music’ has mutated, one of the key figures in its evolution would have to be Bristol’s Rob Ellis, better known simply as Pinch. His fascination with what the outer limits of the dub sound can achieve, has made him a distinct figure within the fluid group of like-minded dubstep musicians that defined the so-called Bristol sound. In 2003, a Kode9 set at London’s seminal FWD>> became the stepping-stone into dubstep that inspired him to start the first pure dubstep night outside of FWD>>, Subloaded, in his hometown. With the city’s love of dub and long musical lineage, plus Pinch’s dedication to the importance of the actual sound, it quickly formed a dedicated community and became a yardstick by which other nascent events were measured. This had all been driven by a key moment in his own musical evolution which as he explains, “I lost interest in D&B and started buying minimal Basic Channel style techno, garage, grime and electronica instead – trying to mix them up together,” pre-empting the dominant sound of 4/4 dub-techno embraced by today’s crop of young producers, like Hessle Audio, who regularly cite the Bristol sound as a big influence. This embrace of a starker, dubbier sound became the seed from where his Tectonic label grew, and by championing artists like 2562, led to his eventual release of work with dub legend and King Tubby apprentice, Scientist. His FABRICLIVE offering comes hot on the heels of mixes from Pearson Sound and an artist with whom he’s just recently released a collaborative album on Honest Jon’s, Shackleton. These are all producers who work in a similar vein, that is, impeccable attention to sound detail, continual experimentation with rhythm whilst always maintaining a definitive ‘sound’ which can be traced throughout all their productions.

The mix itself combines all of Pinch’s loves, a blend of both melodic mood-pieces, driving dub-techno and the odd mid-range bass wobble masterfully planted to maximum effect. This is all peppered through in post-production with little vocal samples, mostly supplied by Bristol MC Jakes, that fully form the mix, like the grain in wood, supplying body, making it more than just a sum of its constituent parts. Pinch kicks things off somewhere through a Distal production, a screwed hip-hop vocal making it sound like a paranoiac’s reimagining of ghetto-tech. This quickly sets the tone – managing to juggle the ominous with the upfront, like the Lynchian strings of ‘In Dreams’ which phase seamlessly into the manic energy of Boddika and Joy O’s recent smash ‘Swims’. The mix really clips along, testament to Pinch’s skill behind the decks, most tracks only playing out for a couple of minutes at most. There’s a nod to the pure dub-techno of Basic Channel, with a cut from Shed’s side-project EQD, mastered at that other altar to all things bass, Berlin’s Hard Wax. This drives into another major influence, with Pinch’s own remix adding some rolling sine-waves to the guttural vocals of Prince Green on Henry & Louis& neo-dub. A sledgehammer wobble both heralds, and ends, the central section of the mix, with Pinch’s collaborative effort with Photek, and Chestplate boss Distance’s weighty ‘Blue Meanie’. This central nub almost functions as a showcase, Pinch demonstrating some of contemporary dubstep’s many flavours: the industrial sounds of Emika, Roska’s clattering drums, Addison Groove’s use of repeating vocals as a rhythmic weapon and the shimmering techy keys of Goth Trad. The final two tracks are supplied by a couple of the most promising young producers to emerge in the past few years, Londoner OM Unit and Tectonic’s own Illum Sphere. ‘Pressure’ certainly doesn’t let up, presenting us with a relentless squiggling synth-line awash in a storm of feedback then changing tack considerably into a steady pulsing beat. Pinch often talks of psychedelic dub, and here Illum Sphere demonstrates it wonderfully, toeing the line between instrumental breakbeats and even deep house, with its ethnic drums, distorted strings and a pitched down warble. This isn’t the true end as the mix is bookended with the rest of Distal’s track in order to achieve a perfect circularity as Pinch explains.

I am a supporter of the sound of vinyl and the cultural associations I make with this format so it was important to me – even if I do ultimately end up abandoning my beloved format one day – to stick by my guns and record the mix like this. I also made the whole mix start and finish in the same spot – meaning that the entire DJ mix can work as a loop if you put it on repeat. I really like the idea of certain kinds of music existing in its own infinite context and setting up the mix to loop like that was playing entirely into that idea.” – Pinch 2011

2010 marked the birth of the In:Motion series when the Bristol based promoter team joined forces with the countries most esteemed music brands, bringing with them the finest talent of the underground music scene to the West Country. Various Artists: 116 & Rising (Hessle Audio)

One of the reasons ascribed to dubstep’s continuing success has been its ability to absorb influences from across the entire electronic spectrum, and no label has been more key to its continuing evolution than Hessle Audio. Started in 2007 by David Kennedy, Ben Thomson and Kevin McAuley, the label quickly became a benchmark for quality, through releases from (the then) new artists like TRG, Untold and James Blake, as well as a vehicle for their own productions.With 18 releases over the past three years, the imprint is renowned for its impeccable quality control. Kennedy is their most prolific producer, under his Ramadanman and Pearson Sound monikers, now amalgamated into his own name. Ben UFO has always stayed true to his initial love, that of DJing almost as curation: he demonstrates this biweekly on his Rinse FM radio show and at Hessle’s Fabric residency, having been one of the first to start playing with the tempo to allow for older house and garage influences in his sets. Pangaea defined his sonic palette on a self-titled EP, a landmark of 2010, with minimal rolling basslines, vocal-driven melodies and more than a nod to the music’s old school roots.

The compilation exists as a way to unite the entire Hessle roster, as well as allowing them an avenue to put out work by friends and producers they have been unable to work with so far.The first disc is all new work plus a second has a selection of choice cuts from the back catalogue.There’s also work from producers who they feel have shaped the label’s aesthetic, like D1’s ‘Sub Zero’, whose sub bass stabs were a staple of the early DMZ sets that they initially united over back in 2005. One of their close affiliates, Addison Groove is also featured, his anthem ‘Footcrab’ having done so much to bring the tough tempo of juke to the world’s dancefloors.The subtle pitch-shifting of a looping hip hop vocal and the polyrhythmic patter of rim shots and cymbals on ‘Fuk Tha 101’ are unmistakably his. Another producer previously unreleased on Hessle is synth-mad Randomer whose ‘Brunk’ features an industrial strength kick and finishes up with ghostly pads invoking musique concrete.The disc is rounded off by Bristol’s Peverelist, whose own dub-soaked productions, as well as those released on his label Punch Drunk, owe so much to that city’s rich musical traditions. On ‘Sun Dance’ synth chords bring to mind the dystopian drum n bass of DJ Krust, the track driven forwarded by paper-like hi-hats and cymbals.There’s a single claustrophobic Hammond note held through to the close alongside the echoing sounds of water dripping in a cave.

Disc one kicks off with the spritely chimes and shuffling beat of Elgato’s ‘Music’, whose muted vocal chant was used to such beautiful effect in Kennedy’s recent FABRICLIVE mix. Untold bring’s detuned chords, jangling glass and a cheeky synth line, breaking down into mutant funky house. Blawan’s ‘Potchla Vee’ reveals some unexpected instrumentation: the skittering of what sounds like the cogs of a clock gives little breathing room to the assault of tribal drums and processed grunts.The Pearson Sound track ‘Stifle’ seems to slow things down, with an adenoidal vocal snippet acting as counterfoil to the percussive snap of the drums, delicate EQing and synth washes providing characteristic texture. Once again on ‘Twice’, Joe demonstrates the effectiveness of unexpected drum sampling, with a disconnected beat cooked up out of error bleeps and the tap of a typewriter. Pangaea’s own contribution is a rave homage; oscillating between synth stabs and a filtered ragga MC sample, the track is layered with a bouncy acid bassline, creating a phantom jump up effect. Romania’s TRG was Hessle’s first release and here builds on his mutant garage template, with a reverb-soaked drum kit jostling against some analogue pads and a seagull-sounding distorted warble. James Blake, re-edits an earlier Hessle release, bringing the processed vocals to the fore much in the style of his recent album. It’s soul music that’s undecidedly electronic, the vocals screwed and chopped into the background, a virtuoso display of arrangement ordering a lacklustre pair of cowbells, a chorus of shuffles, croaks and pads into an infectious slow burner.

James Blake covers Feist “Limit To Your Love” ; album due in early 2011

James Blake will round off a watershed year with a cover of Feist & Chilly Gonzales’s “Limit To Your Love”, to be released via Atlas Records on November 8.

It serves as the first taster for the 21-year-old’s debut album, which has been slated for release in early 2011. Recorded entirely alone in his bedroom, it also mark Blake’s full vocal debut – and by all accounts he has quite the soulful croon.

Blake kicked off 2010 with The Bells Sketch EP on Ramadanman, Ben UFO and Pangaea’s Hessle Audio, which was swiftly followed by the CMYK 12″ on resurgent Belgian label R&S, which saw the producer sample 90s R&B divas Kelis and Aaliyah in the title track, chopping their vocals into a wider landscape of sonic textures, leftfield beats and dubstep tempos.

His most recent release, Klavierwerke (also on R&S), took post-dubstep (or pubstep as we like to call it) to a new level of esoteric appeal, paying scant attention to the rules of rhythm based music.(juno report)
