The Hush Now – 3rd Album ‘Memos’ – June 17th

The Hush Now - 3rd Album 'Memos' - June 17thBoston, Massachusetts indie-pop rock quintet The Hush Now unveil their highly anticipated 3rd album. Described as “audio candy for the art school crowd”, compared and influenced by bands from a wide array of genres, such as My Bloody Valentine, Guided By Voices, The Cure and Hall & Oates, they continue to release consistently great albums that have matured and progressed, with the latest release introducing even catchier hooks and more subtle guitars.

SXSW and CMJ appearances plus plays on BBC 6Music and internet exposure of the self-titled debut album helped to fuel interest while the band got to work on the second album, “Constellations”, which the UK music review described as “a little Stone Roses, a dash of Guided By Voices, a smidgen of Flaming Lips and a dose of Yo La Tengo; one of those classic pop tunes that pop up from time to time and catch you pleasantly off guard.” After having made an impression on music critics and fans alike, they began to create “Memos”.

Written entirely by the band and produced, mixed and recorded by well known Mad Oak Studio’s head engineer and producer Benny Grotto, who has worked with the likes of Aerosmith and The Dresden Dolls, “Memos” may be their strongest, quality album to date. Upbeat melodies and catchy hooks reminiscent of bands like The Smiths open the album, before taking you through a jazzy, nocturnal ballad and a song with an air of a late 90s club sound.

The Hush Now are: Adam Quane (guitar/vocals), Noel Kelly (guitar/vocals), Barry Marino (drums/vocals), Pat Macdonald (bass/vocals) and Jon Rosen (keys)

San Fermin Announces Debut Self-Titled Album On Downtown Records+Sonsick (Stream)

San Fermin Announces Debut Self-Titled Album On Downtown Records on September 17th
SAN FERMIN ALBUM
Brooklyn musician Ellis Ludwig-Leone, the songwriter and composer behind San Fermin, has announced his signing to Downtown Records and the subsequent release of his self-titled, debut album San Fermin on September 17. Ludwig-Leone, who studied music composition at Yale University, envisioned the album’s concept prior to writing the music or knowing who would perform it. Pulling inspiration from Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises, he conceived the album as a dialogue between an earnest, unhappy man and a cynical, elusive woman. Upon Ludwig-Leone’s graduation he traveled to the Canadian Rocky Mountains where he wrote the album over the course of six weeks. “Writing for a group of unknown musicians gave the writing process a kind of operatic scope,” Ludwig-Leone says. On his return he enlisted the help of longtime friend and vocalist Allen Tate as well as female vocalists Holly Laessig and Jess Wolfe (Lucius) to give voices to the characters he developed.

A pastiche of post-rock, chamber-pop and contemporary classical composition, San Fermin is strongly influenced by Ludwig-Leone’s unique background in classical music, and the album fittingly features instrumentalists from the likes of Bon Iver, yMusic, and Asphalt Orchestra. A composer of instrumental music as well, Ludwig-Leone recently finished a ballet score for BalletCollective (comprised of New York City Ballet members), to be premiered by ACME at the Joyce Theater this summer, and is currently arranging a piece with Sonic Youth‘s Lee Ranaldo for the Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop. He is an assistant to the composer Nico Muhly.

Coastal Cities new video for “Nothing Ever Changes”

Posted in News with tags , , , , , on May 9, 2013 by E.N.

‘Nothing Ever Changes’‘Nothing Ever Changes’, is the second track from Coastal Cities’ forthcoming double A side single ‘Entropic / Nothing Ever Changes’, to be released through Once Upon A Time Records on 3rd June 2013. The one-vocal line chorus and prominent synth lines of ‘Nothing Ever Changes’, bolstered by some very neat duet guitar work, show that Coastal Cities don’t just write songs, but write future festival classics. You can see why they couldn’t chose an A side for the single, and went with the double.

The video for ‘Nothing Ever Changes’ is a minimal, slick and highly produced product that really portrays the band’s exceedingly sharp look.

STRFKR – Beach Monster [Video]

From STRFKR’s third album ‘Miracle Mile’ (out now) this little retro gem displays one of the bands’ more mellow and melodious tracks.

Saturday Looks Good To Me -One Kiss Ends It All+ Break In(Stream)

Posted in News with tags , , , , on April 9, 2013 by E.N.

SLGTM-coverAnn Arbor’s Saturday Looks Good To Me will release a new LP, One Kiss Ends It All, on May 21 with Polyvinyl Records. Stream their new track “Break In” now.

In their decade-plus existence, Saturday Looks Good To Me has never taken a typical path: endless line-up changes, shifts in sound from lo-fi 60′s pop to experimental noise rock, a twisting discography heavy on one-off singles and bizarre package tours with afrobeat and freakfolk bands.

In 2012, bandleader and songwriter Fred Thomas returned with a new band line-up, including new vocalists Carol Catherine and Amber Fellows, but also with old friends from previous SLGTM incarnations like bassist Scott DeRoche and drummer Ryan Howard showing up for the fun. The band’s fifth proper album, One Kiss Ends It All, came together following the group’s first tour after getting back in action, but the four years since their last full-length weren’t spent cultivating this new batch of songs. Instead, a spontaneous and breezy vibe flows through the album’s 12 selections, drawing on the reference points of 60′s pop and early indie rock, all filtered through the band’s skewed pop lens.

Thomas’ songs are always bittersweet, but short, uptempo rockers like “Invisible Friend” and “Break In” recall the open-hearted running melodicism of New Zealand kiwi-pop while more groove-oriented numbers like “Polar Bear” or “Sunglasses” meld electronic elements with the same sharp-edged attitude of the first Strokes album. Even former SLGTM lead vocalist Betty Barnes (who now lives in Sweden) sings lead on two tracks: the doo-wop piano lament of “Negative Space” and the spare indie rock road trip “The Ever-present New Times Condition”.

Saturday Looks Good To Me’s albums from the early 2000′s (All Your Summer Songs, Every Night) predicted the reverb-saturated production and girl-group revisitations that indie rock would embrace several years down the road. One Kiss Ends It All expands on those early lo-fi marvels and feels more like a revelation than a continuance. With more sophisticated arrangements and melodies more direct and engaging than anything the band has ever done, the album feels like re-telling the details of a dream minutes after waking. Something new colliding with something that shouldn’t make sense in a beautifully strange collage. And always more details hidden in the corners.

Ra Ra Riot “Beta Love”+New Video+”Is It Too Much” (Stream)

RA RA RIOT
BETA LOVE
OUT MARCH 18th ON BARSUK RECORDS

Ra Ra Riot's Beta Love
Ra Ra Riot have announced the release date for their third album Beta Love as March 18th for the UK on Barsuk Records. The album marks the band’s first outing as a four piece with members Wes Miles on vocals, Milo Bonacci on guitar, Mathieu Santos on bass and Rebecca Zeller on violin forming the core of the group. Beta Love’s songs are informed by the works of cyperpunk novelist William Gibson and futurist Ray Kurzweil’s musings on the technological singularity and transhumanism.

Inspired by their lean new lineup, the recording process found Ra Ra Riot’s members exploring and re-defining their roles within the new makeup of the group. They built upon demos created mostly by Miles and producer Dennis Herring (Modest Mouse, Elvis Costello, Wavves) at Sweet Tea Studios in Oxford, MS. For the first time in their history the band recorded in a warmer climate and found themselves stimulated by the balmy Southern air and the physical setting of Oxford. Joined by session drummer Josh Freese (Devo, Nine Inch Nails, Weezer) the band enjoyed exploring its potential, experimenting with new influences and exciting sounds.

Mathieu said of the sessions, “Making the record was a lot of fun for us, because we were in a completely different environment, trying a completely new approach. We’d been used to arriving at a session with every song totally arranged and figured out, but in Oxford, a lot of the creative decision-making happened in the studio, on the fly. We wanted to be outside of our collective comfort zone for this record. We wanted to be open to new things happening. There was a lot of building up and tearing down with Dennis—a lot of problem solving, a lot of trial and error, and that was really exciting for us.”

Formed in the basements and attics surrounding Syracuse University in 2006, Ra Ra Riot released their debut The Rhumb Line on Barsuk in 2008. NPR Music said their 2010 release The Orchard’s “10 songs positively burst with sophistication, precision and polish.”

arkansas hush nowBoston, MA quintet The Hush Now return with a brand new single Arkansas. Taken from the band’s forthcoming third album Memos, due for UK release in Spring / Summer 2013, the track showcases the band at their rousing, Indie-pop, best. Having won scores of fans in the states with appearances at CMJ and SXSW, The Hush Now return to UK shores with a small taster of what we can expect from their new full length.
Noel Kelly, vocalist, comments:
“Arkansas” started out with a garage band loop conjured up by our keyboardist in the back of our crammed tour van while on our way down to SXSW. It’s a good 36 hour haul from Boston to Austin. We played a couple of shows on the way down in NYC and Philadelphia, but on the last leg of the trip and about halfway through the state of
Arkansas our drummer found out that a dear friend had passed unexpectedly. We stopped and mulled over our options at a gas and sip and eventually decided to carry on. We spent the week in Austin like ghosts shifting through the crowds and then piled back into the van for a marathon, non-stop drive back to Boston. Although the song at its core is about being caught in a manipulative relationship, the lyrics try to capture that time rumbling back through the vastness of Arkansas, staring out the window and lost in reflection with a sense of nothing to return to at home.
