TEED-GETLOST-Totally Enormous Extinct DinosaursCrosstown Rebels infamous Get Lost series returns with a new episode delving into the more obscure and rare choices from the award-winning crossover dance act and old friend of the label, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs. Get Lost VI is a double disc compilation full of rarities and cutting edge house and techno carefully chosen and collated by TEED aka Orlando Higginbottom, including a new exclusive track made by him together with Eats Everything that will be released as a single on the label.

Crosstown Rebels’ seminal Get Lost series has previously featured quirky artists and musical hedonists Jamie Jones, Acid Pauli, Dinky and the label head Damian Lazarus. Each episode invites the artist to share new insights into their musical personality and indulge in their more distinctive and eccentric choices. Get Lost is also a renowned series of global events. “I couldn´t think of a better home for my first dj comp mix or whatever they´re called, Get Lost is a brilliant series with an intriguing past (and future). I´m very grateful to Damian and Crosstown Rebels for the opportunity, and excited for people to hear it,” comments TEED.

The eclectic first disc showcases the likes of Gold Panda, LFO and rare solo work from Art Department’s Kenny Glasgow as well as subtle additions such as a fascinating monologue from the notorious psychedelic scholarTerence McKenna. Whilst disc two returns to the dancefloor driven that TEED has become infamous for including a huge Breach remix of Jamie JonesAme rework of Tiga and heavyweight meeting of Subb-an & Tom Trago featuring Seth Troxler. The culmination of both hours makes for a timeless asset of electronic mastery available on CD, on vinyl and digitally.crosstown

“The Get Lost album project is a very special one for me and demands the most forward thinking artists to take on. TEED proved with his debut album that he is an electronic visionary and now he shows us the inside of his mind as a DJ – we all need to take note at this double album of brilliance.” Damian Lazarus

CRMCD022 RebelRave3_CoverhighresAs Crosstown Rebels reach a decade of existence they look back with pride on one of their most prolific years to date with the third episode of their treasured Rebel Rave series. This three disc compendium of their yield from 2012 walks back together through a year which saw them launch a mystical festival, Day Zero, and reconnect with classic artists from the label’s history such as Mathew Jonson, Jamie Jones, Tiga & Dinky as well as typically introducing a sea of new faces such asFrancesca LombardoAmiraliFur Coat and Aidan Lavelle.

The third disc is a nostalgic journey on the whole label’s history mixed together by rising star, Subb-an. Named as DJ Magazines ‘Best Breakthrough DJ’ in their 2011 end of year awards, Subb-an’s prodigious studio talents have seen him in demand for remixes of mainstream artists such as Jamie Woon, Lana Del Ray, Noir & Haze and Hollis P Monroe over recent months. He ducks and dives taking a tripped out mood through mind-expanding choices such as Gavin Herlihy’s‘Witching Hour’ and Loco Dice’s remix of Riz MC’s‘Radar’ before steering back to driving into the midst of the night with glorious choices such as D’Julz’s edit of Solomun’s anthemic Rebellion release ‘Daddy’s Jam’ and Subb-an’s own‘Misleading’. His peers Jamie Jones, Francesca Lombardo and Amirali also offer highlights to his seamless selection, with Amirali’s ‘Whisper’ adding an epic and graceful close to his episode.

This global journey will bear fruit to another torrent of mind tripping, off-the-grid events driven by their tight-knit Rebel family of artists.

On 20th - 21st  December 2012 he will stage a festival in sun-soaked Playa del Carmen, Mexico that will celebrate the momentous end of this world cycle, as decreed by the ancient Mayan civilisation.

To commemorate this enigmatic event he asked thirteen artists to create a new track for a special Day Zero compilation. His peers and comrades stepped up to the challenge with Rebel’s artist past, present and future contributing to this momentous collection compiled by Damian Lazarus.

Pier Bucci opens with the eerie and captivating ‘Mayas’ full of his Latin-American spirit. He was introduced to the music world by Crosstown, releasing his first two albums on the label. Next up, Quenum shares his‘Prophecy’ and Mathew Johnson returns to the label with the driving pulses of ‘In Search Of A New Planet With Oxygen’. Johnson delivered a huge remix early in the label’s history from Hiem ‘She’s The One’ and is a pioneer of the underground house movement.

Listen closely to the messages hidden in the knocking drums and trembling tones of ‘Jeel, k´eex’ from Mexican native Metrika. Crosstown’s newest first lady Francesca Lombardo’s contribution ‘Cosmic Dancer’ swells with femininity and allure while Fur Coat, who concocted the last artist album for CR, explain a little more about the significant date in their cut ‘Greed, Insanity’.

Fosky & Bog and the newcomer to the label Jay Haze both contribute epic dancefloor monsters to the collection. Haze is boss of legendary techno imprint Contexterrior and has been living in South America of late, fascinated by its mystical pull.

Supernatural cuts from Eduardo Castillo featuring his baritone opera trained voice and the Israeli Navid Izadi ft KMLN align up with Mike Shannon for his ‘Sunrise’ and the closing moments from Thugfucker & Shaun Reeves and Acid Pauli & Nu bring this otherworldly assembly to a flourishing close

The Day Zero album arrives on the dawn of the 24 hour event that brings together the best electronic music and entertainment from some of the world’s finest DJs as they embrace a new moment in time. The occasion will mark the end-date of a 25,625-year-long cycle and the final cycle of the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar. At this moment the galactic alignment will occur, the earth will align with the centre of the Milky Way creating a moment for transformation, renewal and change.

Robert James delivers another battle weapon in the James arsenal with fantastic ‘Body Movement’ whilst wAFF delivers the sublime ‘Sunshine’, a fantastic slice of hedonistic house. Miguel Campbell and Richy Ahmed come together to make the electro-inspired ‘Tell Me Why’, whilst Lee Foss delivers another corker in the form of ‘Life On Mars’. Diego Moreno – Giddy Up (it_Tizz Recordings) (Preview Clips)

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 25, 2012 by E.N.

Continuing to impress with their releases and discovering the hottest new talent, the UK’s it_Tizz Recordings reach release numbers 105 and 106, with two outings by Guatemala’s Diego Moreno.  The first record is a double A side that has all the elements of today’s biggest deep house tracks – big deep basslines, warped vintage sounding vocals and spooked out synth stabs.  Think Jamie Jones, Solomun and Noir & Haze. The second release sees remixes of the title track following a similar approach, delivered courtesy of Dan Styles and Cat In The Closet.

Blackhall & Bookless -Josies EP (VIT013)

Newcastles purveyors of fine house make their debut release on Vitalik Recordings. Written by Blackhall & Bookless and engineered by Ethyl, the Josies EP is a contemporary take a classical house aesthetic, timeless house music in short.

Having met through the passion of house music in their early teens, it didn’t take long before Chris Blackhall and Chris Bookless were delving into the depths of electronic music. After years of local residencies developing a sound beyond there years the duo created their Newcastle based brand. 5 years later Jaunt been responsible for introducing acts such as Kerri Chandler, Ben Klock, Jamie Jones, Julio Bashmore, Kyle Hall, Tobi Neumann and Prosumer to North east dance floors. Over the past 2 years they have taken their party to the capital and are now regularly Djing further afield playing at numerous destinations across the UK and Europe.
Having heard early versions the tracks the duo had written Vitalik matched the pair with an engineer that would complement their classical house sensibilities. Ethyl, currently one of the UK’s most promising young house producers has established himself on labels such as Quintessentials, secretsundaze and Tsuba as a well respected artist that exudes a sophistication in his production ahead of his years. The fruits of this experimental collaboration are two very slick productions, emotively charged classic house cuts executed with clarity of concept.
‘Touch’ kicks off the EP with the familiar sounds of 808 percussion and a bouncing Juno bassline. Washes of metallic pads sink through the mix giving way to the gentle but evocative chords that give the track its trademark haunting quality.
‘Esoj’ takes the bpm down to 115 bpm, the huge bassline and trundling beats give the track an expansive feel, a feeling that is further developed by the stunningly bright chord stabs that elevate the track to its melodic crescendo. Esoj is a refreshing example of how to make uplifting house music without being irreverent or cliché.
German studio boffins Hatikvah are first up to bat in the remixes, many will know them from their output on labels like Soma, Suol, Cadenza, Vakant, Liebe Detail, Buzzin Fly and Morris Audio to name but a few. Hatikvah take things in a slightly different direction, swinging the beats and unleashing a monstrous filtered bassline, the rawness of the huge bass  is contrasted by delicately scattered keys. The final interpretation, a beefed up danceflloor rendition by Vitalik stalwart Suolade completes the package. Taking things up to a house tempo the chunky beats and uncomplicated melodies are simple but effective.

Jamie Jones -Tracks From The Crypt

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on May 15, 2012 by E.N.

Jamie Jones rise to the top has been a steady climb. The young Welshman was always respected from fellow peers and artists through early releases on Freak n’Chic, Cocoon, Get Physical and a debut artist album on Crosstown Rebels, but now is deeply admired as the best in the game.

In ‘Tracks From The Crypt’ Jamie finally sets some of the best-loved dancefloor bombs of the past five years loose from the vaults of his infamous studio. Tracks such as the bouncing infectious grooves of ‘Somewhere’, ‘Paradise’ and ‘Frequencies’ are infamous from Jamie’s live recordings, and others such as the electro-clash influenced ‘City At Night’, ‘Mari 2d Underground’ a future dancefloor anthem and ‘Tonight In Tokyo’ featuring Luca C are as yet unheard and offer a glimpse of the future. Closing with the leisurely pace of ‘The Lows’, Jamie shows he can stretch the capabilities of house music and has formulated his own new breed.

Jamie explains: “This is a collection of my favourite unreleased secret weapons from the last 5 years plus some brand new tunes that I´m hammering on the dancefloor right now. Looking back in the vaults, I found some killers that people have been trying to get their hands on for ages and decided to make my second album a combination of these.”

Amirali – In Time ,May 14th on Crosstown Rebels

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on February 27, 2012 by E.N.

How do you follow up a year of delivering some of the best music on the planet? Find some thats even better. Crosstown Rebels do it again and discover a true talent in Amirali unleashing his longplayer ‘in Time’ as their first entry into 2012.

Amirali goes beyond your average dance music producer. A musician at heart, every instrument heard on ‘In Time’ was played by the Iranian-come-Canadian producer. He shapes his songs in mysterious patterns and subtly hypnotises with his dexterity. The album passes swiftly and stops time in its path, leaving a deep longing to hear it again and yearning to unravel its secrets

Amirali’s voice is mysterious and evocative, a futuristic hybrid of indie idols (think a sombre Ian Brown or intoxicated Radiohead) while tainted with the auras of favourite 80s synth heroes Depeche Mode amidst the current energy of dance enigmas Art Department and Underworld. Forging a strong element of surprise in his tactics, he takes a bold course, daring to create subtle complexities in house music.

The pensive buds of ‘The Harmonious Song’ softly open this quiet masterpiece. Tinkering on weightless pads, Amirali expresses a need to be taken seriously. In ‘Missing’ he spins out swirls of instrumentation and throbbing basslines while his singing curls and smoulders within its light textures.

‘Just An Illusion’ skips with the heartbeat of house music as Amirali fiirts with a higher tempo. But soon enough ‘Painting On A Canvas’ and its successor ‘Last Words’ revives the buoyant space of before, sketching bright skies and pregnant moods within Amirali’s sunken gothic bells, charged guitar strums and reflective keys.

Other highlights in Amirali’s maiden voyage include his first single, ‘Beautiful World’, unleashed on Lazarus’ own Crosstown Rebels label in early 2012. Apop-infused bomb that captivated the dancefloor, it was an apt introduction for this multifaceted talent and powerful signal of the swells and surges of ‘In Time’ and of the great new talent in our midst.

“Making this album was a period of self discovery in which I got to know myself aa deeper level. ´In Time´, the year and a half journey into an experimentation of myself and my sound consists of 13 tracks. Each track has a different story to tell and is a reflection of my past. It’s the most honest and personal I have ever been with my music, like I´m giving a part of my soul to the listener. I hope they enjoy.” Amirali 2012

Damian Lazarus has a sharp ear and talent for A&R and he illustrates this with great clarity through his latest introduction. He went on a scouting mission for something more alternative for the label, and uncovered the Iranian music maker. Amirali’s heritage from Iran hangs heavy in the atmospheres of ‘In Time’ but Toronto is where he evoked the spirits of dance music into his style. Currently residing in London, Amirali will tour his new and exclusive live set this year to mark the launch of the album including vocals, live keys and a visual exploration into his weird and wonderful mind.

Following a year that the label was crowned the leader of the pack, spawning albums from the biggest artists of the year such as Art Department, Deniz Kurtel and Maceo Plex and coming top of the charts in many end of year charts, Crosstown Rebels dare to introduce another raw talent with unique dimensions. Later this year they have aligned new album material from their homegrown team including Resident Advisor’s no 1 DJ of the year, Jamie Jones, Maceo Plex plus new collaborations and signings Fur Coat, Mother Of Seven and more.

2011 has been the best year so far for arguably the world’s best underground dance label, Crosstown Rebels. Having released incredible artist albums by Maceo Plex, Deniz Kurtel & Art Department and the sublime ‘Get Lost 4’ mixed by Damian Lazarus, they now release Rebel Rave 2 as a compendium to their most prolific year to date. The album showcases highlights from the year over two discs and features a stunning DJ mix on CD3 mixed by high flying LA threepiece collective Droog.

Rebel Rave returns with another three discs of upfront material from the Crosstown Rebels recent catalogue, in a similar format to the first edition. Featuring some of the most ground-breaking, critically acclaimed and widely loved singles from the Crosstown stable this year; from label stalwarts Jamie Jones, Glimpse, Deniz Kurtel, Dan Berkson and head honcho Damian Lazarus, to a sea of new faces in Russ Yallop, Fur Coat and Subb-an, and outstanding contributions from two of this year biggest artists Maceo Plex and Art Department plus huge releases from Guti & Dubshape, Solomun, James What, Inxec & Droog.

The collection is a great barometer to Crosstown’s triumphant year. The first two discs are unmixed and span buried B-sides, reedits and remixes from some of this year’s biggest releases, featuring work by some inspirational producers such as DJ Harvey, Guy Gerber, Maya Jane Coles, Dixon, Ewan Pearson, Ivan Smagghe, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Zev (Wolf + Lamb) and many more. Disc three is a superb mix of highlights and fresh material from the imprint sonically sculptured together by LA’s Droog. Hypnotic and alluring, vibrant and exciting, this timeless journey cements a victorious year for both the imprint, and its expanding family of artists.

Born in 2008 as a prolific film series that follows some of the most charismatic and formidable characters of the underground dance music scene as their career takes them around the globe (www.rebelrave.tv), Rebel Rave has become a benchmark for a new coming of age for house and techno music. Put together by global pioneers of the industry, Crosstown Rebels, Rebel Rave is a beacon of kudos, keeping a foot firmly in the underground while carving its own path into the mainstream.

The first compilation came from Clive Henry and for the second episode we meet Droog, a unique three piece collective from Lazarus’ new home in Los Angeles. Droog are Andrei Osyka, Brett Griffin and Justin Sloe, a dynamic trio of producers, DJs and music lovers that have set about instilling their passion into their beat hungry West Coast environment. Droog are behind the infamous rooftop soirees at LA’s Standard hotel that brought the elite of house and techno to the city for the first time.

Now regularly showcasing the best talent and with Steve Bug, Magda, Dixon and Soul Clap all big fans of the series, Culprit sessions are undoubtedly the superior event in LA for cutting edge music. In 2009, Droog started their Culprit label, initiated with the debut release from Hot Natured. Since then it has supported the careers of local talent such as Kenneth James Gibson and Lee Foss (before his relocation to London) and brought early releases from Matt Tolfrey & Inxec and Ovum star M A N I K.

Damian Lazarus established Crosstown Rebels 8 years ago and has created a covert force of nature that continues to dig up new talent and future heroes. Rebel Rave is the label’s flagship calling card and an annual celebration of its achievements to date. Rebel Rave marks the close of 2011 for Crosstown Rebels, while next year promises to be an yet more prolific, with new albums from Jamie Jones, Maceo Plex, Art Department & Deniz Kurtel, as well as debut albums from Fur Coat, Amirali and many other exciting new projects.

The start of the UK party season this year is led by Bristol’s pioneering party starters In:Motion. A series of incredible events striking hot on the heels of last year’s triumphant first season, which tore a hole in the skate park come club Motion, spread across five rooms indoors and out. 2011 brings artists from all musical persuasions capturing everyone from the heroes of the scene to the rising stars and bringing all manner of brands from the electronic music community together to embrace all dimensions of the underground dance movement.

The peerless Hessle Audio make their debut for the In:Motion series on 15th October, standing head and shoulders above the rest with performances from Jamie XX and Jamie Woon. Jamie XX’s movements out of his band, The XX to DJ and remix artist have been well received with heavyweights such as Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, Florence and The Machine, and Canadian rap giant Drake. Jamie also released one of the anthems of the summer on NMBRs in the form of ‘Far Nearer’. Since Jamie Woon came onto the scene everyone has been scrabbling for the opportunity to see him live. His album debut ‘Mirror Writing’ saw him strike a terrific balance between convention and subversion, producing dubstep infused commercial tracks, alongside equally enigmatic and enchanting productions. Both of these artists are a rare sight in a club setting, but Bristol In:Motion’s festival atmosphere found within numerous intimate and vast spaces is an apt fit for these two sonic masters.

Bugged Out return for 2011 on the opening weekend on October 8th, bringing Jamie Jones, now a household name for a new generation of house and techno fans through his Hot Natured guise and Hot Creations label. It will have already been an amazing week for L-Vis 1990 & the Neon Dream who will have just released their staggering new album ‘Neon Dreams’ which features Para One, Teki Latex and Julio Bashmore. L-Vis 1990 (aka James Connolly) a London-based DJ and producer co-founded the groundbreaking Night Slugs imprint with Bok Bok. Also kicking things off in the first week is Fake Blood aka Theo Keating aka Touché. Under his many aliases, the man like Keating has produced some classics over the years remixing the likes of Underworld, Hot Chip & UNKLE. He’s become somewhat of a Bugged Out! family member and will bring his bass heavy bangers to the floor.

Sharing the bill on opening weekend are firm friends and In:Motion family favourites Hospitality, who bring Danny Byrd, High Contrast and MJ Cole amongst others. Bringing together bass heavy music, an electrifying atmosphere and second to none production, Hospitality have grown into true titans of the scene, consistently bringing the best in show-stopping DJs from the constantly evolving drum & bass scene to a hugely faithful crowd. This summer they represented at the Parklife festival, ripped apart their own stage at Lovebox and set things alight at Global Gathering. D&B is back in Bristol, its spiritual home.

Sven Vath’s Cocoon, are to techno what light is to fire. They continue to touch thousands of people across every continent with their inimitable brand and unfaltering show. This December they will bring it to Bristol for the first time. The now iconic Tiefschwarz headline the show, exemplifying their playful talents for putting everything from electro to tech-house and slithering minimal under the scope and turning out consistently compelling sets.

Bristol’s own Just Jack bring Soul Clap on the 29th October to headline their highly acclaimed Halloween party The Gunpowder Plot which will be complete with circus acts and fireworks. The trend-setting American East coast duo leapt to fame through their relationship to the esteemed Wolf + Lamb family. This year saw them bridge new levels of notoriety through their special DJ Kicks album.

Moving back a little to November and BBC Radio 1’s Toddla T will make the crossing from Sheffield counties to blow the roof of Motion once again. Toddla T has firmly established himself in the last few years with production and heavyweight remixes for the likes of Roots Manuva, Hot Chip, Gorillaz and Tinchy Stryder and more, plus a DJ rep so strong that it bagged him a regular Radio 1 show.

Festival brands BLOC will join heavyweights Run and Bristol favourites Futureboogie, who bring the infamous Henrik Schwarz, ensuring there is something for every musical taste on show.

Add to that the incredible production team and a venue that verges on festival status with five rooms of varying calibre, and In:Motion’s second year is set to be bigger and better than anything else on the radar. 2011 sees improved sound engineering and facilities such as food court and photo booth.
