TNGHT Share New Track “Acrylics”, US Tour Starts This Week

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 9, 2013 by E.N.

TNGHTAhead of their headline US tour and forthcoming Friday night appearances at Coachella which features their explosive new live show, TNGHT wanted to share new music with their fans.

“Acrylics” evokes the spirit of late 90s UK happy hardcore whilst still maintaining the distinctive widescreen cinematics and percussive hip hop bounce which saw their 2012 EP become a defining release and cement the duo as the new production favorites of rappers from Kanye West to Lil Wayne to Kendrick Lamar.

As two of the most exciting artists in urban electronic music Glaswegian Hudson Mohawke and Montreal native Lunice came together last year as TNGHT to launch an all out assault on the world hip hop production – backing this up with an incendiary live show that they showcased last summer. Although both are well established as solo artists, this project gave them both an opportunity to indulge their more decadent tendencies.

TNGHT will also be appearing at selected festival dates throughout summer 2013, and stay tuned for more music.

BBE Pres. J-Dilla -Think Twice / E – MC2

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 31, 2012 by E.N.

Released: 2012-04-17
One of the most important musicians of our time. When we think of John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, and Marvin Gaye, J Dilla will be going down along that history line of greatness.” – Common (from XXL)

He inspired me so much. One of the best days of my life was when he handed me a record with drums on it. I was so honored.” – Kanye West (from XXL)

Jay Dee’s “Welcome to Detroit” was the album that kicked off BBE’s Beat Generation series. This seminal album (it even has its own Wikipedia entry) cemented Dilla’s reputation as a virtuoso beat maker with a remarkable range of talents. For the first time, (from that album) “Think Twice” appears on a very limited 7” single. It is a cover of Donald Byrd’s seminal classic featuring Dwele on vocals… it shows Dilla’s supreme versatility behind the boards (and on the mic — it’s not the featured Dwele that sings the h! ook).

And from his posthumously relealeased album “The Shinining” :

Common, meanwhile, does the Common thing, which is to ride the beat dumbly (but appropriately) on standout robofunker “E=MC2,” Despite Kanye boosting his sales numbers, it was Jay Dee who consistently brought out the best emcee in Common, his former roommate, and he proves it again here on “E=MC2.”

Goapele – Break of Dawn

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 10, 2012 by E.N.

RELEASE DATE: 16TH JANUARY 2012

Bay Area songstress Goapele, one of the most alluring and powerful voices of our times, releases her first studio album in almost six years, ‘Break of Dawn’.

The album features production from heavyweights such as Malay of John Legend and Mary J. Blige fame, Bobby Ozuna, whose previous credits include John Mayer and Erykah Badu, and Kanye West, amongst many others. It will be released on Decon Records and Goapele’s own imprint Skyblaze Recordings, representing a shift from major back to indie labels, after releasing her last album ‘Change It All’ on Sony Music in 2006.

‘Break of Dawn’ takes listeners through a journey of sensuality, heartbreak, and ultimately, resolution and inner peace. The opening track ‘Play’, the first single off the album, has had support from major radio players including XFM’s Mary Anne Hobb’s and BBC Radio 1’s Gilles Peterson. It is a prime demonstration of Goapele’s ever-present sexuality that oozes from every note. ‘Undertow’ is a melancholic description of what it feels like to be in the clutches of love with musical inspirations drawing instinctively from early Brandy and Alicia Keys. The second half of the album takes on a more optimistic tone, with ‘Money’ being reminiscent of a funk-injected Neptunes production and ‘Pieces’ showing a more uplifting outlook on love and the end of a significant relationship. Goapele tactfully rounds off her masterpiece with ‘Right Here’ and ‘Milk & Honey’, two club-oriented R&B tracks with a modern twist.

Goapele captivated the music industry in 2001 with her stunning independently released debut album “Closer” earning fans from punters to musical contemporaries ranging from superstars like Erykah Badu, Mos Def and Kanye West to such legendary luminaries as Prince and Stevie Wonder.

She is roundly hailed for consistently delivering emotionally charged yet uplifting soulful cuts that skilfully blend hip hop, jazz, and melodic R&B. She embarks on a 15 date promotional tour across the USA at the start of next year.

Rolling StoneThe spiritual love-child of Sade and D’Angelo mixes sweet soul vocals, jazz-funk instrumentation and hip hop rhythms by underground Bay Area beatmasters. Goapele can kick it in the streets as in the lounge.”

Billboard MagazineGoapele’s smoky, sensual voice is a beacon that shines on a set that wisely steers clear of overproduction.”

With What Were You Hoping For?, Van Hunt kicks out the jams with a spare but dizzyingly vibrant meld of day-glo psychedelic soul with glammed-up riffs and the acerbic energy of punk.  The album sees the Grammy-winning musician/songwriter/producer turning up the volume on his genre-smashing songcraft and the results are altogether gripping.  From the breakneck “Watching You Go Crazy is Driving Me Insane” and “A Time Machine is My New Girlfriend” to the metallic k.o. of the album’s first single,”Eyes Like Pearls,” Hunt unleashes a sound that reverberates with caustic wit, passion, and the thrilling excitement of an artist operating at the peak of his powers.  Careening with exhilarating intensity and frenetic, inventive musicality, What Were You Hoping For? is Van Hunt’s most daring and provocative work to date.

IN ADVANCE OF MUCH ANTICIPATED NEW ALBUM;

“WHAT WERE YOU HOPING FOR?”ARRIVES SEPTEMBER 27

Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter/producer Van Hunt makes his long awaited return this week with the online premiere of “June,” his first new music in more than three years.  The track is currently available as a free download via The Huffington Post, which you can download by clicking the link below:

Free Download: “June”

“June” heralds the hugely anticipated release of Hunt’s extraordinary new album, What Were You Hoping For? .  The album – a joint venture between the Nashville-based Thirty Tigers and Hunt’s own label, godless-hotspot  – arrives in stores and at all digital retailers on September 27th.

“‘June’ was written to mirror a person’s complicated moodiness,” Hunt says. “Some people are called pessimists because of their persistent dourness – but I think they are optimists.  Sorely disappointed optimists.  The song is my attempt to make one, in particular, smile.”

Hunt will unveil a series of new tracks each month leading up to release of What Were You Hoping For? with free downloads available at a range of blogs and music websites.  Among them will be the album’s first single, “Eyes Like Pearls,” which will impact multi-format radio outlets nationwide later this summer.  In addition, free downloads will be available at Hunt’s newly relaunched official website, www.vanhunt.com.

Furthermore, the Los Angeles-based Hunt and his crack band plan to hit the road in the weeks surrounding the album’s release, marking his first national tour since 2008.  A full itinerary will be announced shortly.

Van Hunt first fell in thrall to the power of music from an early age, taking inspiration from a remarkable range of musicians and composers, spanning J.S. Bach to David Bowie, Thelonious Monk to Curtis Mayfield, Iggy Pop to The Isley Brothers.  The Dayton, Ohio-born musician soon made his way to Atlanta, where he drew acclaim for his creative production efforts and crafty songwriting, featured on recordings by such diverse artists as Dionne Farris, Joi, Rahsaan Patterson, and Cree Summer.  His own self-titled debut album arrived in 2004, instantly establishing Hunt as a distinctive and original talent with its idiosyncratic melding of R&B, neo-soul, funk, pop, and rock ‘n’ roll.  The equally inventive On The Jungle Floor followed two years later, highlighted by the single, “Character” as well as by a surprising cover of Iggy Pop & James Williamson’s Kill City classic, “No Sense Of Crime.”

In 2007, Hunt received a Grammy Award for “Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals,” honoring  “Family Affair,” a collaboration with John Legend and Joss Stone found on the 2006 Sly & The Family Stone tribute album, Different Strokes For Different Folks.  Hunt had previously received a 2005 “Best Urban/Alternative Performance” Grammy nomination for his breakthrough hit single, “Dust.”

Hunt’s third album, Popular, was slated for 2008 but remains officially unreleased.  Nevertheless, the album has become an underground sensation, a classic lost album hailed by LA Weekly as “a left-field stunner” for its “trippy fusion of funk grooves, punk guitar and soul vocals.”  In 2009, Hunt liberated a collection of B-sides, demos, remixes, and other rarities on the self-released collection, Use In Case Of Emergency (Rare Items From The Vault).

A charismatic and engaging live performer, Hunt also attracted critical praise touring both as headliner as well as alongside such diverse acts as Kanye West, The Roots, Coldplay, Mary J. Blige, Seal and Dave Matthews Band.
