Rinse – I Love Funky (July 19th)

Rinse Recordings, the label branch of London pirate station Rinse FM, is ready to release a new compilation called I Love Funky.

Headed by DJ Geeneus, Rinse FM is among the UK’s most listened to pirate radio stations, and perhaps the most respected (and established) global channel for grime, dubstep and funky. Much like 2008’s I Love Dubstep, their new collection weaves together more than 50 genre-defining tracks across two discs, mixed this time by in-house DJs Supa D and MA1. Many funky anthems are included, such as Hard House Banton’s “Sirens” and Perempay & Dee’s “In the Air,” along with crossover hits like Donaeo’s “Party Hard” and a few funky-compatible curveballs like Major Lazer’s “Pon de Floor” and Kenny Dope’s remix of “Sunday Morning” by Todd Terry.

I Love Funky doesn’t hit stores until next month, but in the mean time you can always catch Supa D and MA1 online or on the airwaves over at Rinse FM

When people talk about The New Detroit, it’s a safe bet that 18-year-old producer and DJ Kyle Hall is going to be a major part of the conversation. Born into a musical family, Hall grew up in the same Motor City neighborhood as techno legends like Robert Hood, Kelli Hand, and Anthony “Shake” Shakir, was later mentored by guys like Mike Huckaby, and now sits at the forefront of his hometown’s next generation. He’s already dropped releases on high-quality labels like FXHE and Hyperdub, and also helms his own imprint, Wild Oats. Not bad for a kid who’s not even old enough to drink yet. Fresh off some tour dates in Asia and prior to his latest European jaunt, we pinned Hall down long enough to put together an exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series. Combining masters of the craft with similarly fresh-faced new artists, the mix makes clear that with folks like Kyle Hall taking the reins, the future of Detroit is in good hands.
