Untold to release ‘Black Light Spriral’ LP on Hemlock, stream Sing A Love Song

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on November 23, 2013 by E.N.

Untold_black light spiralOne sweaty hot week in July 2013, Untold ripped into creating his new album, Black Light Spiral, having discovered a land so full of jolts and thrills that the beats wrote themselves and the sounds just kept on coming.

The final 40 minute, 8 track album, is as true to the furious and fiery journey Untold (aka Jack Dunning) personally went on as you could hope for. It’s unhindered, spontaneous and completely raw. As perfectly imperfect as a trip like this should be.

And you’ll be left gasping for air. Wondering “what the fuck is this music I’ve just heard?” Which is classic Untold. We’ve come to expect the unexpected from him.

From day one, with tracks like Kingdom, Anaconda and Stop What You’re Doing, Untold has been an inventor and tastemaker. Today with two iconic record labels to his name, Hemlock and Pennyroyal, his imagination and openness to the new strides on.

And Black Light Spiral, Untold’s first album released on Hemlock, continues in the same spirit. It delivers on Untold’s mission to keep the people up and at it with rough tough music while confounding them with brilliantly executed improbabilities.

Untold was raised on Jungle and Hardcore, has travelled through Dubstep and leftfield Techno and now he’s arrived here where he’s playing with sub bass, sirens, reggae samples and broken rhythms. But this isn’t token rave revivalism.

Because while Untold may be experienced in the best raw genres dance music has to offer, he has no desire to defer back ad infinitum. He’s in it for pushing boundaries. So Black Light Spiral is entirely new.

Even in the increasingly crowded world of bass music, Kingdom is an artist without many real peers. Sure, he’s one of the leading members of the London-based Night Slugs cadre, but this American DJ and producer—who has also released music on the Fool’s Gold imprint—sports a diverse sound arsenal that relies heavily on three things: unusual bass permutations, inventive drum patterns, and, perhaps most importantly, an unabashed love of hip-hop and R&B. All of those elements play major roles in this exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series, a DJ session that happens to include a whole lot of unreleased Kingdom material. It all comes as the one-time Brooklyn artist—who now splits time between New York and Los Angeles—prepares to head out on a sizable North American tour, a trek that includes multiple gigs at SXSW, stops on both coasts, and some Canadian dates with Night Slugs bretheren Bok Bok and Girl Unit. If his DJ sets on the road resemble this podcast in the least, Kingdom is going to leave a lot of happy dancefloor revelers in his wake.

Night Slugs Allstars Vol.1

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on November 8, 2010 by E.N.

Up-and-coming UK bass label Night Slugs will release their first compilation later this month, entitled Night Slugs Allstars Vol.1.

Co-founded by Alex Sushon (AKA Bok Bok) and James Connelly (AKA L-Vis 1990), Night Slugs was born out of boredom with London’s club scene. “We wanted to bring on a new era and that is what we were saying from the get go,” said Sushon in RA’s recent Label of the Month feature. It was only a year ago that the party morphed into a label, but since then Sushon and Connelly have hardly stopped to take a breath: Allstars Vol.1 will be Night Slugs’ 13th release, and their first full-length. The collection looks back on a year of releases while also hinting at what’s to come, with singles by core artists, such as Lil Silva’s “Seasons” or Girl Unit’s “Wut,” along with unreleased material by newcomers like Jacques Green and Optimum (the latter of whom recently launched a label with Ikonika). It will be available on CD and via digital download.

Tracklist
01. Mosca – Square One VIP
02. Lil Silva – Golds 2 Get
03. Girl Unit – IRL (Bok Bok Remix)
04. Kingdom – Bust Broke
05. L-Vis 1990 & T. Williams – Stand Up
06. Jam City – Arpjam
07. Lil Silva – Seasons

Night Slugs will release Night Slugs Allstars Vol.1 on November 29th, 2010.

It may be a little early to start handing out Label of the Year nominations, but as it stands now, it would be hard to omit London’s Night Slugs imprint from serious consideration. Label bosses Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990 may get the lion’s share of the attention, but the artist roster they’ve assembled is just as impressive, perhaps none more so than 24-year-old DJ, producer, and recent Bubblin’ subject Girl Unit. With only one official release and a smattering of remixes and other tracks to his name, he nonetheless displays a keen ear for US street sounds, whether it be ghettotech and juke or radio-ready hip-hop and R&B. This week, the London-based artist is embarking on his first US tour, during which he’ll hopefully be able to take in some of these sounds first-hand while playing a smattering of dates on both coasts. To celebrate, he’s put together this mix for the XLR8R podcast series, which literally came in at the last minute because he wanted to make extra sure to fill it with the latest dubplates and unreleased tunes.
