Bronx-born 80’s baby, Gordon Voidwell has appropriately named his debut album, Leap Into The Voidwhich was inspired from the Yves Klein photomontage, “Le Saut Dans Le Vide.”   Gordon’s highly anticipated first full-length is due for release in early Spring 2012.  Expect the signature soaring harmonies, analog synths, indie-rocking guitars, and obligatory blips and bleeps from this Harlem Boys Choir alumnus.  Ever the multi-tasker, GV has produced every track, sang every vocal nuance, and played every instrument, except for a Vernon Reid (of the legendary Living Colour) guitar solo on a track called “New Number Old Trick.”

When he wasn’t busy collaborating with Chiddy BangThe Morning Benders, and Das Racist, or sharing bills with Theophilus London, Marina & The Diamonds, and Bear Hands,  Gordon also found time to record a mixtape of non-album tracks and remixes.  Sporting provocative song titles like “MalcolmXXXMclaren,” “ID-EGO-SUPEREGO,” and “Black on Black Murder,” the free MalcomXMclaren mixtape aims to be an eclectic blend of No Wave, Electro-Funk, Disco, Rap, and Post-Punk.  GV will unleash the project on December 1st.  Here is a sneak peak of the track, “MalcomXXXMcLaren,” which Voidwell says “is meant to suggest a possibility for more hybridized art that speaks multiple languages and narratives at once.”  But mostly, it’s just super dance-y.  Click HERE to stream/download it.

Voidwell also whipped up this viral video companion piece, which he explains “employs hip-hop sampling/remixing practices and William S. Burroughs’ cut-up and fold-in method made famous in Naked Lunch.”  Click HERE to watch.

Since dropping his Voided Checks Mixtape for free in late 2009, GordonVoidwell has quickly been garnering acclaim for both his own material as well as the tracks he’s crafted for others.  Gordon has also won the adorations of everyone from indie darlingsBRAHMS(who remixed Voidwell’s “Ivy League Circus”) to pop music masterminds like Grammy-winning producer Mark Ronson(who declared “I love this shit.  I play it on my radio show, in my house AND in my sets.”)  Mayer Hawthorne, another fan, even invited Gordon to open his tour last Fall along with The Heavy.

Gordon Voidwell Live Dates:

10/19:  New York, NY @ Tammany Hall (CMJ Showcase)
10/21: New York, NY @ Santos Party House(CMJ Showcase)
11/26: New York, NY @ Le Poisson Rouge (Voidwell Homecoming Dance)
02/11:  North Adams, MA @ Mass MoCa

Chilly Gonzales – You Can Dance (Video+Robotaki remix preview)

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 1, 2011 by E.N.

“…highly entertaining.” – New York Times

“You Can Dance” Single Available
March 1st via Arts & Crafts
2010 will be remembered as the year that Chilly Gonzales made a name for himself with his latest album (and accompanying film!) Ivory Tower, which received tremendous critical acclaim and best-of 2010 accolades worldwide. Now we’re thrilled to announce the release of a new single from Ivory Tower, in the form of “You Can Dance,” a euphoric hand-clap piano jamboree. The upbeat disco-soul number sees release on March 1st via Canadian tastemaker label Arts & Crafts!

The single, which will be available digitally in North America, comes with several remixes, including one from the nineteen-year old blog sensation Robotaki- other remixes come courtesy of Max Tundra, Shadow Dancer, Gemini Club, Edwin Van Cleef and Popular Computer.

Gonzales is also known as a super-producer of sorts, working with a wide array of artists. Best known for his production work with Feist (whose album The Reminderearned him a Grammy nomination), Peaches and Jamie Lidell, he has more recently worked with Marina & the Diamonds and Tiga, not to mention older collaborations with Bjork and Daft Punk. His single “Never Stop” was recently chosen by Apple to soundtrack the latest iPad commercial, broadcasting Chilly’s magic to millions of homes across the globe.

As for his own material, Gonzo has criss-crossed the musical world. His early releases tended toward lo-fi rap (The Entertainist) and dark, gritty cabaret (Gonzales Über Alles), or a combination of the two (Presidential Suite). In 2004 he took a step in a different direction with Solo Piano, an album consisting entirely of beautifully arranged original compositions of classical and jazz piano numbers that became his most well-known and best selling album to date.

In addition to all this great news, Chilly’s brilliantly hilarious film Ivory Tower, featuring Tiga and Peaches as well as frequent Gonzales collaborator Feist, is due for release on DVD later this year.

“You Can Dance” Single Includes Remixes from:

Robotaki
Max Tundra
Shadow Dancer
Edwin Van Cleef
Popular Computer
Gemini Club
Cosmonaut Grechko

Through The Night by Heartbeatsheartbeats
Choose an artist with wide-spread international press acclaim. A top-5 selling album in the US electronic music chart. A sell-out tour of the US with The Twelves. A second, sell-out tour of the States with a third already being scheduled. UK appearances confirmed at Creamfields, Get Loaded… and Rockness. Remix comissions from Lady Gaga, Axwell, Passion Pit, Marina & The Diamonds, Goldfrapp and more. A request to produce a track for the next B.O.B. album. Plus a poster campaign that became a national talking point. Choose an artist that achieves this in six short months. Choose Grum.

Graeme Shepherd aka Grum shouldn’t need any introduction. But with a list of credits like this amassed since the release of his last single, ‘Can’t Shake That Feeling’, in April, introductions are necessary.

Returning with his own brand of sun-kissed ‘cosmic-electro’, Grum proves once again that he cares little about the critiques. Serving only to the good-times with a release of the brilliant but carefree single, ‘Through The Night’.

Future disco donned out in stonewash and shoulder pads. ‘Through The Night’, unashamedly 80s, is as much a well-penned song – Hall & Oates anybody? – as it is big-room floorfiller; All vamped up synths, rising riffs and driving electro-bass.

Grum’s vivid 80s referencing in ‘Through The Night’ hasn’t gone unnoticed by the video production house, General Assembley, either. Brought in once again to make a Grum music video (GA also directed ‘Can’t Shake This Feeling’), Grum’s music has inspired a brilliantly realized and hilarious ‘Brookheimer/bromance’ pastiche, which premiered this week on Popjustice.

“Through The Night is your classic, rough and tumble bromance. That age old cop meets cop tale. We were aiming to more directly address some of the latent issues that seem to be at play in a lot of the overly macho “buddy” movies of the 80’s in which the men appeared to always be much closer to their partner on the force than to any of the women they’re purported to be dating. One part Bruckheimer/Bay, one part Michael Mann and Friedkin. Throw in a bit of Jeff Foxworthy for good measure and there you have it.”

A producer whose tracks frequently win support from the likes of Annie Mac, Pete Tong, Zane Lowe, Nick Grimshaw and Steve Smart to name a few, ‘Through The Night’ is another Grum master class in dance.

Released 4th October, ‘the original sits alongside a full club mix from Grum, the ‘Swiss Menergy’ Remix and a remix treatments from Tom De Neef.

Choose your day getting just that little bit better. Choose Grum.

“… highly entertaining.”New York Times

Famed rapper / pianist / Grammy-nominated producer Chilly Gonzales is about to release Ivory Tower, an ambitious, intelligent and – typically of Chilly – clever album, produced by German producer Boys Noize. The album is a musical companion to a new feature film of the same name, written and produced by Gonzales, starring Tiga, Peaches and Gonzo himself. The film, which centers around two champion chess-playing brothers (Gonzales and Tiga) who share a love for the same girl (Peaches), confirms Gonzales as the musical genius and legendary all-round entertainer he’s always claimed to be.

Chilly spent most of the past year wooing audiences with his now infamous Piano Talk Shows, which included several sold-out shows in New York (and two @ SXSW 2010) featuring high-profile guest collaborators and instigators such as Andrew WK, Sia, A-Track, and Princess Superstar creating beauty and mayhem on stage. But the main attraction, as always, was Chilly G, aka “Gonzo”, who delivered his trademark wry, semi-autobiographical rap lyrics over original piano works, with additional storytelling in between songs.

When he’s not entertaining the troops onstage, Gonzales is also known to be a “Super Producer” of sorts, working with a wide array of artists. Best known for his production work with Feist (whose album The Reminder earned him a Grammy nomination), Peaches and Jamie Lidell, he has more recently worked with Marina & the Diamonds, thecocknbullkid and Tiga, not to mention older collaborations with Bjork and Daft Punk. All of which is to say that, despite all the jokes and shenanigans Gonzo is known for, his talent for sharp arrangements and his ear for pop hits are simply undeniable.

As for his own material, Gonzo has criss-crossed the musical world. His early releases tended toward lo-fi rap (The Entertainist; 2000) and dark, gritty cabaret (Gonzales Uber Alles, also 2000 and re-issued simultaneously with IVORY TOWER accompanied by 2 unreleased tracks from back in the day), or a combination of the two (Presidential Suite; 2002). In 2004 he took a step in a different direction with Solo Piano, an album consisting entirely of beautifully arranged original compositions of classical and jazz piano numbers that became his most well-known and best selling album to date. In 2008 he took a turn in yet another direction with Soft Power, a nod to 70s AM rock and the pop ballads he reveled in as a child (and which features the more distinct pop sensibility he is known for as a producer).

Ivory Tower is yet another U-turn, as Gonzales delves into pop with a smattering of “Piano Talk Show” style ballads and some stunning instrumental pieces that double as film score. Whether Gonzales is attempting euphoric disco sing-alongs like “Ivory Tower”, playing somber piano on songs like “Final Fantasy”, or shamelessly tearing apart his worst enemy (and himself), Chilly nails it every time.

Throughout it all, one thing remains certain: Chilly Gonzales is indeed the hardest working man in music today, and he’s doing it all for you. He lives to entertain you. It’s time to show him some gratitude.
