Gemini – Tribute Vol 2 (Robsoul, ROBSOUL105) (Preview Clips)

March 2011 saw Phil Weeks’ Robsoul Recordings revisit 4 of Gemini’s classic tracks, originally released on Cyclo Recordings in the 1990’s.  The release, simply called ‘Tribute EP’, was all that needed to be said about the impact Spencer Kincy has had on Phil Weeks’ own brand of house music.   January 2012 will see round two hit the shelves as four more Gemini tracks from the Cyclo vaults will be released as Tribute Vol 2.

The release of the first Tribute EP in March helped take Gemini’s music to a new generation.  Publications including DJ Mag, DeBug and 5 Mag all leant their support along with DJs including Soul Clap, Maya Jane Coles, Till Von Sein, Lee Burridge, D’Julz, Deetron, Danny Tenaglia, Catz N Dogz, Spencer Parker, Doc Martin, Charles Webster, the list goes on and on (…and on).

The Tribute EPs prove that, despite no longer being involved in the music scene, Spencer Kincy’s genius touch remains.

5 Magazine’s Terry Matthews on Gemini:
“Spencer Kincy was giant in Chicago’s House Music revival – part of the second wave of younger DJs and producers that took the music of the early 1980s, rubbed it up and dropped it in places like 500 West Cermak, Medusa’s and the Vault. A lot of people who are now superstars of the scene – Mark Farina, Sneak, Derrick Carter, and dozens of others – were a part of that movement, too. Spencer released a number of tracks on Relief, Planet E, Cajual, Peace Frog – labels representing the classics of that era – and he usually recorded under the name Gemini.”

Rob Clarke Gravity EP(preview)

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 16, 2011 by E.N.

Rob Clarke releases his second EP with Boston label Headtunes, this time showing a deeper, tech-tinged side to his sound.  Two original tracks on the ‘Gravity EP’ are remixed by Mike Jules (Greenhouse, Kinjo, Guesthouse) – one an old school house rendition of ‘Gravity’ and the other a leftfield/down-tempo version of ‘The Haunting’. UK dance music stalwart DeepShizzol rounds off the EP with a remix that brings a more driving dancefloor focus and added vocal to the title track.

Rob Clarke’s recent 4 track ‘Depth Charge EP’ and remix of Dirtyworx, both on Headtunes, received praise from DJs including Laurent Garnier, Q-Burns Abstract Message, Luke Solomon, Nacho Marco and Nick Holder.  Rob is also known for hosting the bi-weekly Serious Sounds Radio Show on popular net radio station/community Chicago House FM and can also be found spinning at Chicaboom events around the South of England.

Mike Jules originally hails from Australia but now resides in London.  He has had a variety or releases and remixes on labels such as Greenhouse, Kinjo, Dustpan and Guesthouse, with his quirky beats and funk-flavoured productions finding favour with the likes of Mark Farina, DJ Sneak, Joshua Heath, Justin Harris and Da Sunlounge. He also produces a deeper/tech style under the Julson moniker.

Spencer T, alias DeepShizzol, was always going to be involved in music – his father was a welder who made cow bells for 70’s African funk band Osibisa and the sound of beating drums was never far away.  Over the past 20 years he has DJ’d with some of dance music’s premier names including Carl Cox, Kevin Saunderson and Fabio & Grooverider.  A former record store owner and respected name along the UK’s south coast, Spencer has more recently turned to promoting events at clubs including Ministry of Sound and a return to music production has yielded appearances on Cross Section and Save You Records.

For its latest release, Toolroom Records teams NYC’s DJ/producer/remixer Honey Dijon and classic house vocalist Dajae on the smash single “Until The Day.”

With Honey Dijon hailing from Chicago and now based in New York, the styles of both of these influential cities are reflected in her original mix of ‘Until The Day’. The old school house of Chicago is accented with the deep underground vibes of the Big Apple that combined with inflections of Dajae’s soulful vocal make this an instant classic. On the remix front, Italy’s Alex Kenji, delivers a pumping edit that will get any main room rocking. Uner demonstrates his versatility as a producer with a re-rub inspired by the 909, while another of Italy’s finest; Aki Bergen provides the perfect after party alternative.

A native of the Windy City, Honey was first inspired by the legendary house sounds of such DJ pioneers as Ron Hardy, Derrick Carter, Mark Farina, and Frankie Knuckles. When she moved to New York, Honey became great friends with even more influential DJ’s, including the amazing Danny Tenaglia, who finally urged her to get behind the decks. Although she spins a distinct Chicago sound with inflections of the deep New York underground, Honey prides herself on a style that is all her own. In fact, Honey is one of the few DJ’s in recent years to defy pigeon-holing. She draws from a wide repertoire of musical styles; from old school Chicago house, disco, tech-house, tribal, funk, soul, and R&B.

Honey is entering one of the most prolific times in her career as a DJ, producer and remixer. In addition to the release of “Until The Day,” Honey recently remixed Casey Spooner’s “Faye Dunayway” and is also planning remixes for Jessica 6 and DJ Chus, plus a brand new original track for Toolroom entitled “The Mix Up.” As a DJ, Honey holds two weekly residencies in New York City – Friday’s “Clubber Down Disco” (expect to hear Salsoul, Prelude, and West End disco alongside house classics) at the legendary Chelsea Hotel and Sunday’s “Haus” at Cielo (deep to tech house, minimal, tribal, boompty, vocals as well as soulful house classics).

Honey Dijon is also big into fashion and recent gigs for such clients as Visionare, Hermes, Chloe, The CFDA Awards, Loewe, Narciso Rodriguez and other global taste-makers are making her one of the most sought after DJ’s for top fashion calendar events.

Mark Farina -Mushroom Jazz 7

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 6, 2010 by E.N.

DJ MARK FARINA returns with
Mushroom Jazz 7

North American tour dates throughout 2010
+ World Tour beginning January 2011

On November 9, Mark Farina releases Mushroom Jazz 7 – the latest installment in the groundbreaking compilation series.

Mushroom Jazz 7 features Farina’s signature hip-hop, jazz-infused, downtempo, dance floor friendly beats. This time around, he deftly mixes and arranges tracks by some of the world’s most dynamic artists including Andy Caldwell, Billa Qause, Colossus, Dave Allison, Derek Dunbar, The Hue, Giano & Michael Knight, Jazz Spastiks, Joshua Heath, Lurob, Slakah the Beatchild, Tommy Largo and Uneaq. The result; a seamless, crisp, hypnotic and sublime journey – true to the easygoing essence that is Mushroom Jazz.

Mark Farina developed his musical tastes in Chicago listening to house music on the radio while living in one of the country’s most primordial breeding grounds for the genre. Farina first started wandering from his passion for the purist forms of House, which grew into his trademark down tempo style – Mushroom Jazz, when he was DJing in both the main and the side rooms at Chicago nightclubs in the same night. Mark experimented with a slower style, dropping De La Soul, Herbie Hancock, funk classics and other stuff that wasn’t being played in the main room. This resulted in a small run of mix tapes entitled “Mushroom Jazz” which Mark released featuring his jazzy down tempo style. The Mushroom Jazz tapes grew from the first run of 50 copies to the next run at 500 copies. Today, these early releases are highly sought after items around the globe.

In 1992, Mark Farina, along with Patty Ryan, created the legendary weekly Jazid Up club night in San Francisco. There, Mark honed his signature style and established a fanatical, cult-like following for himself and the “Mushroom Jazz” sound. Finally, after five years, the club closed its doors and Mark and Patty teamed up with Om Records to release the Mushroom Jazz CD series…And the rest is history. Now, after six volumes and extensive worldwide tours, Mark Farina brings you MJ7 – Farina’s most ambitious release to date, showcasing the evolution of decades of mastery in defining the genre he’s credited with creating. Make sure you check out Mark Farina on the road this fall when the Mushroom Jazz World Tour hits a city near you.
