Ikonika returns with the ‘I Make Lists EP’, the first full extended release since her 2010 debut album ‘Contact, Love, Want, Have’ (Hyperdub). Hum + Buzz present 6 incendiary club ready tracks, her most accomplished and anticipated work to date.
Taking a dark approach with ‘I Make Lists’ and ‘Cold Soaking’, these dubplate anthems have been the highlight of recent Ikonika sets. They both fuse paranoid, intense and ominous basslines with sinister and eerie lead synths. ‘Take Pictures’ melds a languid drum machine strut with reflective but focused melodies. The playful side of Ikonika is present in the Latino Freestyle influenced track ‘Catch Vibes’ and ‘With Your Mouth’, a stripped backed procession. These two tracks employ driving drums, acidic basslines and mischievous melodies.
Bringing us to the finale is the majestic ‘PR812′. Referencing the hijacking of a passenger flight in 2000, Ikonika crafts an emotive dance floor anthem with centre stage given to her original approach to melody and arrangement. Support from Mary Anne Hobbs, Jackmaster, Bok Bok, GIRL UNIT, and Eclair Fifi among others.

On March 26th 2012 Exceptional Blue records present the sublime bass music of ‘Breathtaking’, the new single by Planas AKA Toby Davies, which is adorned with the dulcet vocal tones of Ed Thomas. It precedes the release of debut album ‘The Long Game’ later this year.
‘Breathtaking’ contains enough musical mastery to ensure the leap from underground dancefloors to the wider music world. This isn’t surprising when you consider that Toby has either produced, engineered or written songs with Dionne Bromfield, Binky Griptite of The Dap Kings, Tim Hutton (The Prodigy/Groove Armada), Alex Clare (Island) and Kim Burse – Beyonce’s creative director. He also co-produced and recorded vocals for tracks on the recent L-Vis 1990 album, ‘Neon Dreams’.
Steadily building his credentials with rated releases on Ranking (which he co-owns) and Immerse records, his productions plus remixes for the likes of Foreign Beggars, Black Diamond Bay and Screaming Soul have won DJ support from Mary Anne Hobbs (BBC Radio 1, XFM), Gilles Peterson (BBC Radio 1/6 Music), Don Letts (BBC 6 Music), Ronnie Herel (BBC 1Xtra), Mr Scruff (Solid Steel), Pearson Sound (Hessle Audio), DJ Nonames (Foreign Beggars) and DJ Q (BBC 1Xtra).
The Planas mix of ‘Finest Hour’ by (Exceptional Blue labelmates) Submotion Orchestra has reached over 150,000 YouTube views.
Toby is an original member of Gentleman’s Dub Club, for whom he writes, produces and plays bass, plus he founded the renowned club night Vagabondz, which is now part of the Outlook Festival in Croatia. He also writes hip hop as Tarqwin Smythe with Ed Thomas of Gentleman’s Dub Club, and in 2009 formed producer duo Seemore Productions.

Very limited vinyl repress released on Feb 6th. Nocturnal Sunshine is the new alias for Maya Jane Coles. She’s one half of vocal duo She Is Danger and an emerging tech house superstar under her own name. This release, is all about the A side “Can’t Hide the Way I Feel,” the writhing monster that both fetishes extreme pain and bottles it up in an unbearably spiralling arpeggio that grows and shrinks without ever revealing an opening. Nocturnal Sunshine is worth making an exception for.”
DJ support from: Scuba, Hatcha, Skream, Mary Anne Hobbs, Joy Orbison, Pearson Sound, Appleblim, Brendon Moeller, Kowton, Cosmin TRG & George Fitzgerald.

Rising new label Deadplate Records drop their second release: the first vinyl offering by Artifact, with a remix by Graphics.
Artifact is the main moniker of Bristol’s Ryan Bonfield; an exciting new producer that merges the hard hitting sounds of dubstep with the swung rhythms of 2-step. With tunes signed to the likes of Pollen, Fortified Audio, Hyperboloid and Car Crash Set, those familiar with Bristol’s offerings to the UK dance scene will already be familiar with Artifact’s music. If you’ve ever heard one of his dubs on a dance floor, you will have known – it’s hard not to take notice when they drop. The original tracks here are perfectly complimented by a remix of ‘Archaic Line’ by Oxford/London DJ and producer Graphics.
Deadplate Records is a hotly tipped new label coming out of the London underground dance scene, releasing a hard hitting, percussive sound that sits somewhere in between house, UK funky, UK garage and dubstep. With releases lined up featuring works from Hackman, James Fox, Hodge and the first release featuring Lung, Maxx Roach and Randomer Deadplate Records is gaining strong recognition as a future stalwart. With support coming from DJs such as Blawan, Dark Sky, xxxy and Raffertie, it’s fair to say that Deadplate have started very strong and look set to go on to becoming a household name in the UK underground dance scene.

The German duo of JTRP return to the Deep Teknologi imprint with the hugely anticipated Hynotise EP which sees the duo progress into much darker territory with their 130 BPM output.
Lead track ‘Hypnotise’ is a stripped-back affair with an acid bassline that’s reminiscent of early 00′s grime with its sublow tendencies.
But their sophomore release really starts to take shape when the AA Side ‘Ceddybu’ comes into play with its tense 2 minute build-up that drops into an explosive off kilter synth workout. With crispy drum programming in abundance here this one is sure throw any dancer off their 2-step momentarily but once that drop comes in it all makes sense.
Rounding things off the atmospheric ‘Shady’ probably lays claim to be the deeper of the three tracks with it’s submerged bassline and synth combo which gradually builds up a a plethora of dramatic tension.
Already garnering support from Fact Magazine and earning the Money Shot accolade in DJ Mag as well as love from Mary Anne Hobbs, Sinden, Hannah Holland and Chrissy Murderbot, Hypnotise is set to do cement JTRP in the UK bass music scene and propel their evolution into future mainstays.
For a taster of the JTRP sound then look no further than their recent Fact Mix.
