Dub Gabriel feat. The Spaceape – “Is This Revolution” (DAC012)(Stream+Video)

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 1, 2011 by E.N.

ABOUT THE RELEASE:

Dub Gabriel hits us with his most thought-provoking and subversive tracks to date, highlighting the dilemma facing our global society as people take to the streets striking out against hunger, poverty, war, government corruption and the rise of corporate cultural hegemony. Joined by pioneering UK dubstep MC, The Spaceape (Kode9/Burial) on the incendiary title track ‘Is This Revolution’, and Chicago’s Mighty Dub Killerz on the flip for the soulful call to action of ‘These Times’ – together they deliver a lyrical mind-bomb that invokes the spirits of Linton Kwesi Johnson, The Clash and Gil Scott-Heron for a new generation.

ABOUT DUB GABRIEL:

Bass music pioneer Dub Gabriel has been pushing the low-end spectrum since his start at NYC’s legendary Limelight Club in the 90’s. Now, as part of the Akai Pro Artist family, he travels the globe with his APC40 breaking down the barriers between DJ’ing and live electronic performance. His trailblazing style has created much demand on the international club and festival circuits (most recently playing to capacity crowds in a headline slot at this year’s Fusion Festival in Germany), and has seen him perform regularly alongside a truly diverse set of cutting-edge artists that include Benga, Bomb Squad, Kode9, DJ Craze, Scientist, Meat Beat Manifesto, Zion Train and François K (with whom he is a regular guest for the past 7 years at Cielo’s celebrated Deep Space night in NYC).

When not on the road, Dub Gabriel is immersed in the studio creating critically acclaimed projects that include a recent string of heavy-hitters featuring U-Roy, Michael Stipe (REM), MC Zulu, Yo! Majesty, Jahdan Blakkamoore and 77Klash (both known for their work w/ Major Lazer). His unique take on Global Bass Music has led to many commissioned remixes, including some recent standouts for Balkan Beat Box and Dubblestandart feat. Lee Scratch Perry & David Lynch. Under the guise of Jajouka Soundsystem, he recently worked with Bachir Attar (of the Master Musicians of Jajouka) and David J (Bauhaus/Love & Rockets) – their critically acclaimed first track, ‘Salahadeen’, is featured on the groundbreaking Generation Bass ‘Transnational Dubstep’ compilation on Six Degrees Records.

genuine second album coup….Butler now dwells beside James Murphy and Hot Chip as a purveyor of soulful dance music you can think to”
- UNCUT ****

“Like a full-on rock ‘n’ roll lighter anthem, a political piano ballad, a smooth funk song sung by Kele Okereke, etc. It’s an epic offering, one that never buckles beneath the ambition.”
- Stereogum

Hercules and Love Affair’s myth started with the worldwide club smash “Blind”. Their self-titled debut garnered considerable critical and commercial acclaim around the world.  It was named a “Breakthrough Album of the Year” by The New York Times and featured in Pitchfork’s “Top Ten albums of 2008”. The legend continues with their second album Blue Songs. Lead single “My House” is already an international club staple and the new US version has three additional bonus tracks and will come with a bonus remix CD. The album will finally get a US release via Moshi Moshi on August 16th.

On Blue Songs, Hercules’ mastermind Andy Butler has shifted the focus gently away from the New York house and disco forms of the debut; relocating to Denver and recording the album in Vienna with techno producer Patrick Pulsinger. Kim Ann Foxman returns on vocals, and is joined in starring roles by Venezuelan singer Aerea Negrot, fan-turned-collaborator Shaun Wright , Kele Okereke (Bloc Party) and Mark Pistel (Meat Beat Manifesto/Consolidated). Blue Songs sees Butler broaden his musical palette  – “There’s definitely jacking house and there’s definitely even more full-blown disco, but there’s also more experimental, softer music” he explains. Be sure to catch the band on their extensive US tour as part of the Identity Festival to coincide with the release this summer.

Download(Track of the Day):Natasha Kmeto-A way to love me (devonwho remix)

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 30, 2011 by E.N.

Portland beat maker and vocalist Natasha Kmeto has been on the upswing since the release of her latest album Expressor. Her live performances have been making waves, most notably supporting legendary acts such as Morcheeba, Meat Beat Manifesto, and making her debut appearance at LA’s groundbreaking Low End Theory club night. Portland’s foremost authority on beat music, devonwho took one of the more sultry tracks off of Expressor and flipped it into a deeply hypnotic and emotive remix that let’s his meticulous production stand tall while keeping the intended feeling of the Natasha’s vocals intact. Overall a fine demonstration of what Portland has to offer.

dubLoner & Isaac Haile Selassie
to release
“The Fight, The Spirit” on de’fchild Productions

Free download of EP track “The Fight, The Spirit (Kush Arora Remix)”

The Reggae / Dub / Roots Music – ahem – Dubstep scene is growing throughout the global underground and we’d like to introduce you to a character that’s been at the forefront for a long time – Isaac Haile Selassie. On “The Fight, The Spirit” the Los Angeles-by-way-of Ethiopia singer/songwriter/musician teams up with producer dubLoner (AKA Kenneth James Gibson) for an original release that marries a classic sound and socially conscious lyrics with remixes that provide a contemporary flair. It’s an evolutionary step in forward-thinking electronic dub.

Straight up, “The Fight, The Spirit” is a beautiful piece of downtempo music with Isaac’s passionate vocals dropping over dubLoner’s delicate instrumental. On the remix front, Djunya opens his bag of tricks while managing to keep the structure of the original piece intact. Kush Arora brings it to the big systems with a bassed-up and more electronic version of the track. Still, Isaac is there front and center singing his mind. “Backoff!,” the second original track on the EP, is a dubby club track built with 4/4 house beats that twists and turns into a purple haze. Finally, Ruoho Ruotsi reshapes the track into a bubbly, underwater vibe that’s all about chill.

dubLoner is the reggae, roots and dub alias for the man known in everyday circles as Kenneth James Gibson. Since releasing his first record in 1994, he’s recorded under the aliases apendics.shuffle, Eight Frozen Modules, dubLoner, The Premature Wig, Men In Slippers, Cascabel Gentz, KJ Gibbs, Reverse Commuter, Bal Cath, Electronic Music Composer, and Hiss & Buzz (with Jack Dangers of Meat Beat Manifesto), among others. Gibson was also the founder of noise pop band Furry Things and helped launch Adjunct Records in 2005

Isaac Haile Selassie is the real deal and his global journey is one of intrigue and inspiration. Born in a rural area of Ethiopia, his mother passed away before he was a year old and unable to care for him, his father brought him to the capital city, Addis Ababa and gave him over to the care of the late Emperor, Haile Selassie I. Isaac was placed in His Imperial Majesty’s boarding school, which the Emperor himself established, and was overseen personally by His Majesty and in close proximity to the palace. Isaac’s last name is Haile Selassie because he was raised by Haile Selassie I. When the Emperor was deposed, Ethiopia was thrown into political turmoil and Isaac left his country by foot, walking through the desert and until he reached Sudan, where one night he met a group of other Ethiopians who were listening to Bob Marley, a pivotal moment in Isaac’s life. Marley’s message of love and peace resonated within Isaac’s own experience of dealing with life’s harsh realities first hand. From that point on, Isaac (now based in Los Angeles) has been committed to promoting harmony among people around the world and ending racism through the power of his music and lyrics.

“The Fight, The Spirit” is available digitally and as limited edition wax with individually hand painted sleeves from May 25 through de’fchild

About de’fchild productions

Conceived in Montréal in June 2004, de’fchild productions is an independent label and music production imprint currently located in San Francisco. Our musical interests span time and geography, which frees us from the restraints of any one sound aesthetic, style or musical boundary. Our technical work in the studio has us constantly thinking about ways to cultivate genuinely new means of musical expression. This predilection to studio-borne-inspiration is particularly present in our affection for idioms rooted in dub, experimental electro-acoustics, techno/house. Quintessentially, we’re interested in the pursuit of novel sonic art, while having fun exploring the frontiers of more popular musical forms.
