Loungery Day ‘When It Breaks’ ft. Artifact & Latcha remixes

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on May 16, 2013 by E.N.

Loungery_Day_When_It_Breaks_EP_artwork_web_smPointé Records present Loungery Day’s ‘When It Breaks’ EP, his second release for the label. Counting the likes of Artful Dodger,MJ ColeSBTRKTDark Sky and T.Williams as his influences, theMontreal based producer’s signing came about via meetings with the Pointé Records crew at DJ sets around Montreal and the famous Blizzarts venue.

‘Peace of Mind’ kicks off with swirling pads that soon make room for a shuffling garage rhythm, vocal stabs and an ever-present bassline. ‘Keep It Simple’ is an upfront track led by a recognisable vocal hook, over a grounded 4×4 rhythm.

Rising UK producer Artifact adds his distinct stylings to the remix of ‘Keep It Simple’, mangling the clean vocal lines under his hard hitting beats. Latcha takes things up a notch while French newcomer D.L:T.A. strips back the elements to make a clean, funky take on the original. Canadian producer KwikFikscompletes the package with his take on ‘Peace of Mind’, subduing the floating nature of the original and moving it into darker territory.

Music is always evolving and it’s interesting to capture the moment where you are allow to incorporate new styles. I remember when dubstep was a huge thing in Montreal, lots of producers and DJs were getting sick of it and so they tried new things. For some it fails because they were too iconic to the scene and fans felt betrayed, but for others it was a success. That’s how you recognize great artists, because they can adapt to their time.”Loungery Day

Youngman Official Video ‘Who Knows?’ (Skream-produced single)

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on December 22, 2011 by E.N.

Youngman announces release of hotly anticipated new single ‘Who Knows?’ on January 29th 2012.
London singer with close connections to Magnetic Man will release single on Shy FX’s Digital Soundboy label.
‘’The future of pop’’– Annie Mac, Radio 1
“He’s next in line” – Zane Lowe, Radio 1
Youngman, one of the UK’s most exciting and vibrant young vocal talents, has today announced the release of his eagerly awaited new single ‘Who Knows?’ on Shy FX’s Digital Soundboy label.
Mixing Youngman’s powering and distinctive vocal with the pulsating sonic workings of long time friend and collaborator Skream (Magnetic Man), ’Who Knows?’ blurs the lines between underground club smash and credible mainstream hit, having already been named Zane Lowe’s ‘Next Hype’, MistaJam’s ‘Jam Hot’ and Annie Mac’s ‘Record Of The Week’.
With a career that is still in its infancy, Youngman (Simon Smith) has already made his mark as a standout vocalist in the drum’n’bass, and dubstep scenes, working closely with his father Simon ‘Bassline’ Smith plus Breakage and regular live collaborator Benga. He is indeed already a seasoned live performer having graced the stages of Glastonbury, Creamfields, Exit, Lovebox, Global Gathering and across Europe, Australia & North America.
Having become the choice hype man for Skream & Benga, Youngman became a master of working an audience, with his presence as a performer and his inimitable singing voice coming to the fore; it wasn’t long before Skream & Benga turned their attentions to channelling Youngman’s talents into a unique and fresh vocal sound.
‘Who Knows’ is the second offering from Youngman and comes in the wake of his debut street single ‘Tear It Out’/’I Warned Ya’ getting massive support in clubs and radio, with the likes of Radio 1, 1Xtra and Rinse FM all throwing their weight behind the track. With an album in the making titled ‘Me & My Music’, set for release next year the producer credits read like a who’s who of British music, with the likes of Benga, Skream, Shy FX, Breakage, MJ Cole, Sam Frank and Kutz all contributing.
Whilst working away in the studo, Simon has also found time to extended his creative and entrepreneurial skills by designing his own successful clothing range and spearheading a new education scheme ‘Music & Life Workshops’ back in his home town Derby.
With a full schedule of live dates throughout November, December and January with Benga and  Skream, as well as nationwide solo PA performances including 1Xtra Live on 30th Nov, Youngman is primed to cement himself as the next breakthrough underground star.

DKX004: Patterns/Last Time by Gerry Read
on 12″, March 28th, 2011

Gerry Read’s much-loved “Patterns” receives a vinyl run backed by the phenomenal new track “Last Time”. Since his first release in November last year, Gerry’s reputation has spread with MJ Cole, Gilles Peterson and Ben UFO all playing his productions.
“Patterns” lays out a web of delicate percussion, vocal ticks and dub atmospherics, before a charging woodblock drum pattern and locked synth chords launch the track. It’s a strong blend of moody dub atmospherics and euphoric dancefloor energy. The track was supported by forward-looking selectors like Untold, Starkey & Mumdance – and played on the world’s smarter radio stations, Rinse FM, Sub FM, Subjam & Fevah. New track “Last Time” is a slab of reverse-engineered 2011 house music, a reconstruction of an obscure George Fitzgerald white label. 2-step and classic US house sounds are pulled apart and recombined to create a masterful piece of bittersweet London house music. Expect to hear this track everywhere, from grimey backrooms in Bristol to Ibiza beach bars.
Bio & Influences
Since receiving widespread acclaim for his first release from the likes of FACT, Sonic Router and other forward-thinking blogs, Gerry is now working on a number of different label projects, and collaborations with up and coming artists. Gerry recently returned to the UK after spending several years in Australia. The separation from the UK bass scene helped him craft his unique sound, while retaining a deep understanding of his musical influences. Sonically, comparisons range anywhere from Actress to James Blake, with a love for dusty, crushed, vintage sound.

Soul Jazz – Riddim Box: Excursions In The UK Funky Underground on November 8th

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 19, 2010 by E.N.

Esteemed London imprint Soul Jazz Records have announced details for Riddim Box: Excursions In The UK Funky Underground, a two-disc compilation due out in November.

Many of Soul Jazz’s compilations aim to survey a local scene or musical movement, and they’ve always had a soft spot for bass music from the UK; their Box of Dub series helped chart dubstep’s ascent from 2007 on, and just last month they released Future Bass, a collection of genre-bending tunes by artists like Four Tet and Ramadanman. With Riddim Box, they turn their lens on what The Guardian has called “probably the most exciting development in UK music since garage became grime.” The compilation gives the broad strokes of funky’s history so far, showcasing anthems by genre innovators like Altered Natives, NB Funky and MJ Cole. A few cross-over tracks are included as well, such as Kode9′s “Black Sun” and Radio Slave’s remix of “Blaze n’ Cook” by Stereotyp and Al Haca.

Until recently, the name MJ Cole was more or less synonymous with late-’90s/early-’00s UK garage and 2-step, as the man born Matthew Coleman was one of the scene’s progenitors and biggest names. Yet as the bubbling beats and shuffling rhythms fell by the wayside and were eventually swallowed by dubstep’s wobbling swagger, it seemed as though MJ Cole might end up simply another footnote in the annals of electronic music history. But rather than stopping, Cole kept producing and operating his own label, Prolific Recordings, all the while continuing to push his music forward into the future. Nearly a decade later, thanks largely to the rise of UK funky, so-called future garage, and all the other not-quite-dubstep sounds populating UK dancefloors, MJ Cole is once again a cause célèbre and his latest release, the Riddim EP, is being caned alongside the hottest new things from the youngest of young bucks. We asked the veteran producer to put together an exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast, and he delivered this hard-charging, percussion-heavy set that proves the legend hasn’t lost his touch.
