Cosmin TRG will release the second artist album, Gordian on 50 Weapons

gordian cosmin trgTwo years after his debut full length on the label, Modeselektor’s 50 Weapons will release the second artist album, Gordian, by Romanian Cosmin TRG on April 26th. Since that debut, the now Berlin based Cosmin has toured the globe, taking his rusted techno frequencies to places like Fabric, Berghain and Sonar, at the same time as releasing more essential EPs on Rush Hour and 50 Weapons.

The new album marks something of a new direction for Cosmin, however – it’s a much more intricate affair that deals in plenty of fuzzy texture, percussive energy and his trademark skimming bottom ends, but looks outside the techno world for its influences.

“Gordian is as much a document of my past year as it is the beginning of a conversation. The title references an ancient myth, but describes the very contemporary, impossible task of discerning between real and replicated, authentic and contrived. Coping with facts, objects and bodies, the necessity of ‘making it’, fear of failure, fear of ‘not being happy’ are today’s topics, and Gordian is my attempt at an exploration of those issues.”

Starting with the deep, alien laced ambience of ‘New Structures For Living’ its clear from the off Cosmin’s production has continued to improve and evolve since Simulat.Abstract yet heartfelt, it’s followed by the more implosive snare rattles and crossing synth lines of the title track ‘Gordian’ that sounds like a factory gone feral.

Opposing light with dark, density with space, tracks like ‘Desire is Sovereign’ manages to be both propulsive and cerebral. One thing that ties the album to Cosmin’s nuanced back catalogue is the gauziness of tracks like ‘Divided By Design’ where the distant hum of radio frequencies turn your thoughts to Cold War era transmissions lost in blizzards of snow.

Though the heads down surges of tracks like ‘Semipresent’ sure will work on the floor, there’s an underlying narrative that makes this album as suitable for listening on headphones. Non-standard melodies, otherworldly blips and a ruined intergalactic energy seem to course throughout, truly transporting you to another world entirely.

Anstam – Stones and Woods on Modeselektor’s 50 Weapons

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , on October 1, 2012 by E.N.

‘Stones and Woods,’ the second album from elusive German producer Anstam (Lars Stöwe) is a reflection of the journey taken while recording ‘Dispel Dances’ his first LP for Modeselektor’s 50 Weapons imprint out in October.

If ‘Dispel Dances’ was the journey deep into the heart of Anstam – then ‘Stones and Woods’ is the diary of living there.” – Anstam 2012

In the beginning, within the pre-social media and over saturated digital information world we live in today Anstam stood “deeply inspired by the coolness of Steve Reich, the inapprehensible progressive nature of all the Frank Zappa stuff and the brutal epicness of Norwegian Black Metal.”

With a passion for composition and notes over hardware and pattern based Techno Anstam took the hard road in the mid 90’s composing on an Amiga 500 with 8 bit sample cartridges. Using the computer as his orchestra the focus was bringing the cold dead 1’s and 0’s alive giving them the musicality and elegance of a performance. Creativity thrives within restrictions, forcing limited technology past its boundaries and re-writing what was previously possible. Producers like: Experimental Audio Research, Mike Ink and Squarepusher all provided focus for the early days of Anstam and set the bench level of the possibilities within electronic music.

26TH OCTOBER 2012

6. HANDSOME DANCES THE DANCE
7. TIME WILL SHOW YOU WHO I AM
8. T H E H E R A L D A N D T H E L A M B

As time went on Anstams state of mind was coloured by his social surroundings. Through studying, exhibiting contemporary fine art, playing concerts and releasing music; the initial feelings of it being a personal journey, an experiment of isolation were lost. ‘Dispel Dances’ was all about entering the unknown once again embracing all the “good or evil it could bring.”

‘Stones and Woods’ has tracks for the dark heart of forward thinking dance floors all the way to thick spacious textures with all the foreboding of Demdike Stare playing in an abandoned church late at night. Set out like an 80’s pop record every song tells its own story, while being more introverted and emotional than previous material seeing a more fragile side to the Anstam sound. The album opens with hard organic percussion reminiscent of label mate Dave Huismans dark broken beats accompanied by a horror soundtrack moving into arpeggiated xylophones and warped melodies. This is music that defies explanation; it rather demands your attention and willingness to immerse yourself in its depths, letting it guide you through the industrial yet organic world.

Sometimes a challenge but always rewarding 50 Weapons’ “Prince of Darkness” steps up once more showing everyone what’s possible in the ever changing electronic music landscape.

Dutch maverick Dave Huismans may be best known for his heartfelt and boundary pushing bass as 2562, but his longest-going project A Made Up Sound has been gaining just as much momentum lately with its oddball yet funk-fueled take on techno.

The Malfunctions EP presents two wildly different sides to the same story, evoking yearning, nearly broken machines struggling to keep time. It’s yet another incredibly unique and equally functional demonstration of how developed techno should sound in 2012!

A1 / 01 : “Malfunction (Adjust)” 06:11 min
B1 / 02 : “Malfunction (Despair)” 07:00 min
