With 2011’s Blue Songs running the gamut from full-blown disco and jacking house to the more experimental, Hercules & Love Affair’s new album ‘The Feast Of The Broken Heart’ sees another musical reinvention from ringmaster Andy Butler – delivered by an impeccable new line up.

The ever-revolving collective led house music’s resurgence with club anthem ‘Blind’ in 2008 (Pitchfork’s record of the year), and 2014’s line up is another roll call of exceptionally talented vocalists. BRITS nominee John Grant’s ability for translating hardship into elegance is writ large on ‘I Try To Talk To You’ and ‘Liberty’; Rouge Mary, whose deep, spiritual voice is hewn from a gospel education; Belgian singer Gustaph whose counter tenor takes lead on the single ‘Do You Feel The Same?’ and smoky voiced virtuoso Krystle Warren, who was introduced to Butler by Grant, and sings the provocative ‘My Offence’.

Andy Butler comments: “I wanted nasty basslines, stormy, bleary-eyed sounds, fiery, rough, tough and ragged old school house productions that sounded almost techno. I didn’t want polite, I wanted aggressive.

This aesthetic coupled with tales of emotional triumph makes for something tough yet soulful. Meaningful house music that IS pop music and can speak to the most musically adroit of tastes.

Kicking off proceedings is the dancefloor single ‘Do You Feel The Same?’, a jacking pop anthem released 14th April, with B-sides ‘Raid’ (a late night dancefloor banger replete with sirens) and ‘Working Miracles’ (a sample led journey into the more experimental side of Hercules & Love Affair).

‘The Feast Of The Broken Heart’ is co-produced by Ha-Ze Factory and industrial stalwart Mark Pistel and released on Moshi Moshi on May 26th.

“Painted Eyes” MP3 !

US Dates At Identity Festival This Summer

genuine second album coup….Butler now dwells beside James Murphy and Hot Chip as a purveyor of soulful dance music you can think to”
- UNCUT ****

“Like a full-on rock ‘n’ roll lighter anthem, a political piano ballad, a smooth funk song sung by Kele Okereke, etc. It’s an epic offering, one that never buckles beneath the ambition.”
- Stereogum

Hercules and Love Affair’s myth started with the worldwide club smash “Blind”. Their self-titled debut garnered considerable critical and commercial acclaim around the world.  It was named a “Breakthrough Album of the Year” by The New York Times and featured in Pitchfork’s “Top Ten albums of 2008”. The legend continues with their second album Blue Songs. Lead single “My House” is already an international club staple and the new US version has three additional bonus tracks and will come with a bonus remix CD. The album will finally get a US release via Moshi Moshi on August 16th.

On Blue Songs, Hercules’ mastermind Andy Butler has shifted the focus gently away from the New York house and disco forms of the debut; relocating to Denver and recording the album in Vienna with techno producer Patrick Pulsinger. Kim Ann Foxman returns on vocals, and is joined in starring roles by Venezuelan singer Aerea Negrot, fan-turned-collaborator Shaun Wright , Kele Okereke (Bloc Party) and Mark Pistel (Meat Beat Manifesto/Consolidated). Blue Songs sees Butler broaden his musical palette  – “There’s definitely jacking house and there’s definitely even more full-blown disco, but there’s also more experimental, softer music” he explains. Be sure to catch the band on their extensive US tour as part of the Identity Festival to coincide with the release this summer.

Wonderfully orchestrated aural soundscapes” -Dazed & Confused

“Belongings” Out May 9th (Moshi Moshi)

Belongings (teaser)

SXSW Schedule
3/16 [DAY] – The Glitoris vs Big Stereo, Barbarella, 611 Red River (12:30pm)
3/16 [EVE] – The Bat Bar, 218 East 6th St (11pm) [OFFICIAL]
3/18 Fri [DAY] – British Music Embassy
3/18 [DAY] – British Music Embassy Brunch, 512 San Jacinto BLVD (12pm)
3/18 [DAY] – Wichita + Moshi Moshi, Valhalla, 710 Red River (4:30pm)
3/18 [EVE] – Hype Machine party, Pure Volume House, 504 Trinity St (12am)

British band on the rise, Clock Opera will release their new single “Belongings” on May 9th via UK tastemaker label Moshi Moshi (known for the early championship of acts like Florence and the Machine), as well as making their way across the pond to Austin to showcase their dynamic live show which is garnering them praise and fans in leaps and bounds.

Produced by front man Guy Connelly, “Belongings” is already a highlight of their live set; an incredibly beautiful and emotive song, while the b-side is the understated brooding and delicate “Let Go The Lifeboats.”

Clock Opera has been steadily building a reputation as purveyors of cerebral, original and utterly captivating music over the last year. Their first limited edition single “White Noise” is now a rarity and both “A Piece of String” and “Once and For All” released in 2010 have cemented the band’s prolific future among their constant growing league of followers.

They have supported the likes of Yeasayer and Au Revoir Simone on their UK tours and have also delivered inspired remixes for the aforementioned artists as well as reinterpretations of The Drums and The Golden Filter.

Clock Opera will be performing at this year’s SXSW festival for the first time, and wrapping up recording their debut album slated to see release later this year.
