New Album The Sky Is Calling Out June 21st

Canadian-born, NYC-based songstress Kim Boekbinder performs under the moniker The Impossible Girl, crafting lush, genre-defying songs that fuse elements of electronic and acoustic music.  A performer, composer, and visual artist, Boekbinder made headlines in 2010 when she successfully funded her debut LP via Kickstarter and went on to pre-sell her US tour using the fundraising platform. Having built a loyal and enthusiastic following over the past few years, The Impossible Girl is back with her second fan-funded solo album, The Sky Is Calling, a celebration of humans in space. Produced by Joel Hamilton (The Black Keys, Tom Waits, Pretty Lights), the cosmic album will be released on June 21st, and is now available for pre-order here.

Opening the album with an infectious electric energy, “Stellar Alchemist” is driven by a whirlwind of instrumentation swirling above heavy, driving percussion. For a sneak peek into Boekbinder’s world, you can download the “Stellar Alchemist” MP3

The Sky Is Calling launches listeners into the stratosphere with captivating pop songs that are packed with scientific themes and otherworldly sounds. Boekbinder utilizes instruments ranging from synthesizers and drum pads to hammer dulcimer and mbira to bring her audience on an epic journey through time and space. Album track “Fix You Good” has all the elements of a dance floor banger, with buzzing synths, an impossibly catchy melody, and a beat that begs you to move. Title track “The Sky is Calling” showcases Boekbinder’s sweet but commanding vocals above dense layers of W139instrumentation and reverberating vocal harmonies. “Hand To Mouth” is a shimmering slower cut with a melancholic tone that captures the cold, dark loneliness of outer space, while “Alien” does its title justice with a haunting, otherworldly quality that stays with you long after the song ends.

A collection of unique and diverse tracks that explore the vast world around us, The Sky Is Calling has the ability to transport listeners to a place full of mystery and adventure.

Joss Moog – Late Nite Beats (Part 1)(preview)

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 6, 2013 by E.N.

Joss Moog - Late Nite BeatsAhead of the release of his debut LP ‘Late Nite Beats’ in early June, Parisian Joss Moog drops a four track sampler of what we can expect from the album.  As one of the unsung heroes of the Robsoul Recordings roster, Joss Moog has consistently delivered some of the finest quality music at the deeper end of the output found on Phil Weeks’ label.

The tracks on this sampler further cement Joss Moog’s skill at blending live instrumentation with soul-filled samples and house beats – deep and musical, but with more than enough bite to bump the dance floor.  There’s also a departure into funk and soul territory with ‘Sweet Mary’, providing a teaser of the breadth of the forthcoming album.

Release Date:
5th Apr 2013

Traxx – The House That Garage Built (Needwant)

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 4, 2013 by E.N.

Traxx the house garage builtTwo decades on from the birth of garage in the UK, its resurrection is afoot on the global electronic music horizon. Traxx ‘The House That Garage Built’captures the original sounds of New York and New Jersey house and maps their evolution through to the UK interpretations of today.

Spotlighting a new school of producers that use old school techniques against some clever bass manipulation to bring the sound up to date,‘The House That Garage Built’ is high energy and captures a moment in time where dancefloors are coming alive with a new raw and edgy rhythm that´s both mysterious and spellbinding.

Plotting out artists such as Disclosure (who you’d have to have your head buried underground to have missed in 2012), the dexterous wizard Huxley, and Hot Flush prodigy George Fitzgerald, gifted artists that have seen major recognition and even chart success in the past year.

Traxx also shines the light on some newcomers set for the same path such as Ben Pearce, whose 2012 underground hit ‘What I Might Do’ is served up in remix form by Harry Wolfman on the mixNeedwant’s own Ejecawith the elastic grooves of ‘Horizon’ and London based duo Dusky whose‘Flo Jam’ cut is a furtive bomb. Exclusive track highlights also present on the compilation include productions from Frenchman The Mekanism, Purple Velvet, Munich youngsters Rhode & Brown and LA based Rhythm Operator.

As it happened the first time round, music maestros are moving from their love of house and disco to dirty basslines and broken beats. Brands like Rinse take centre stage and a generation that grew up with an already rich history of electronic music create their own strains, fusing together what went before.

In true contemporary fashion and unlike the original garage sound phenomenon, the music Traxx covers is now as accessible for artists and DJs such as Maya Jane Coles, Jamie Jones, Rob Da Bank and Sasha as well as pioneers of the genre such as T Williams and Boddika. A true testament that this musical revival appeals to all walks of life and has found a foothold in the worlds of techno, dubstep, acid as well as nu-disco and house.

Traxx is the latest concoction from London’s prestigious disco and house imprint Needwant who are responsible for some stellar releases from the likes of Kim Ann Foxmann, Mario Basanov and Ejeca. The London based label has won iTunes dance music compilation of the year for their popular Future Disco series and continues to spot movements and showcase their findings at worldwide events in far flung locations such as Ibiza, Amsterdam, Dubai and Singapore.

Miss Kittin Releases ‘Bassline’ music video

Posted in News with tags , , , , on February 27, 2013 by E.N.

miss kittin
Miss Kittin today released the music video for ‘Bassline’ the second single from her forthcoming album ‘Calling From The Stars’ (April wSphere).

The music video was directed by Andrew Woodhead, who has previously worked with Justice, Break Bot, French Fries, Aeroplane and more.

Boasting a career that spans three decades and long-term collaborations with The Hacker and Felix da Housecat, Miss Kittin’s sound is as brilliantly unpredictable as ever. New single ‘Bassline’, available now and as an EP on 25th March, marries vocal melodies with pop sensibilities of the highest form and demonstrates exactly why the sound of Miss Kittin remains as relevant and fresh as ever. Described by Nowness as “A black Ballardian dancefloor illuminated by a setting sun provides the science-fiction backdrop to Parisian dance music heroine Miss Kittin’s new video for ‘Bassline’.

Bassline EP out on March 25th on wSphere.
01. Bassline
02. Bassline (Djedjotronic remix)
03. Motown
04. I Don’t Know How To Move

‘Bassline’ also signals the directorial debut from Andrew Woodhead, who described the video as follows: “The video for Bassline symbolises the steps of a club dance floor, how they start off lonely then change over the course of an evening into a frenzy of dance. With inspiration drawn from movies such as Knight Rider, Total Recall and old Pepsi commercials, a bright punchy universe was created to dance upon.”

Little Boots Sophomore Studio Album Nocturnes
Out May 7 via On Repeat Records

Little Boots
Little Boots aka Victoria Hesketh became one of the most talked about new popstars around when she arrived with her Gold-selling debut Hands in 2009. Now the dance-pop songstress is preparing to release her highly-anticipated sophomore studio album,Nocturnes, May 6thon her new On Repeat Records imprint . The album was produced by DFA Records co-founder Tim Goldsworthy, with other key contributions from Simian Mobile Disco’s James Ford and Hercules and Love Affair’s Andy Butler.Nocturnes is a powerful record of irresistible hooks and stunning songwriting that celebrates 90s house, seventies disco and futuristic electronics while maintaining the magic of classic pop.

Motorway”, is a symphony of bittersweet brilliance, starting with Victoria singing over a simple percussive rhythm that quickly evolves into a variety of noir narratives, chilly melodies and thundering late-night congas. Echoing layered vocals burst through a pulsing bass line on the soaring “Satellites” (co-written with Ariel Reichstadt).“Broken Record” is a pounding club track set against some of her most hypnotic hook lines yet. “Crescendo” is a theatrically infectious summer-ready anthem, while the old school house rhythms and giddy choruses of “Confusion,” penned in the Hollywood hills with Jeppe Laursen (the man behind Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’), is simply Boots at her effortless sing-a-long best.

Check out the “Motorway”

DJing all over the world at many of clubland’s most esteemed nights over the past few years and collaborating with an elite roll-call of dance music’s most credible class, Victoria named the record Nocturnes because it is “an album indebted to the night.” A collection of perfect pop melodies set against faultless beats and synths, it is true long-player, and a sonic experience from beginning to end. Stay tuned for more exciting news + tour plans from Little Boots coming soon!

Nocturnes Tracklist
1. Motorway
2. Confusion
3. Broken Record
4. Shake
5. Beat Beat
6. Every Night I Say A Prayer

Maceo Plex Mixes DJ-Kicks – Out April 30

Maceo Plex Mixes DJ-Kicks
Out April 30 On !K7 Records

K7306CD maceo plex
Is it possible to zero-in on the sound of the future by re-contextualizing music of the past? Maceo Plex’s meticulously crafted DJ-Kicks mix aims to do just that. “For the last three years at least, the big trend has been early ’90s house,” he says. “Everything’s a throwback. I think it’s the right time to put out something that’s a little more deep and futuristic again.” So while Plex’s mix includes tracks that are up to 20-years old, the selections highlight timeless qualities he feels are missing from contemporary dance floors, and the music is painstakingly re-edited for emphasis. “Most of the tracks are really old, so they needed freshening up,” he says. “A lot of them were missing percussion, or some other element I thought they could use. I think it’s time for people to move on to rediscovering what electronic music is all about, which is moving forward. That futuristic sound, which is timeless.”

But isn’t it a bit of a contradiction, trying to bump electronic music out of a retro rut by looking to a different set of old records? Plex, whose real name is Eric Estornel, reasons it thus: “A lot of the music on there is old, but basically has the sounds and the type of vibe that I think is missing these days. I went through a lot of new music. I didn’t want to select anything that everyone is playing at the moment and I definitely didn’t want to select anything that was already out on digital. The whole mix is comprised of vinyl-only tracks that are not going to be out on digital other than the DJ-Kicks mix. To do that I had to go through a lot of new music and a lot of old music, and there wasn’t much new music that I really loved. I mean I love a lot of new music, but there wasn’t anything that I wanted to represent what I’m trying to do with the mix.”

Estornel has certainly come up with a forward-thinking set that doesn’t sound like much else out there. It opens with “Spatial Lobe” by Monsters From ID, a lost gem of electro typewriter beats and cosmic bleeps by two brothers from Northampton in the UK, who also released under the name Bitstream. “That is one of my favourite tracks of all time,” says Estornel. “It’s a really deep emotional electro track.” “New York Is Alright” by TV Baby, a throb of low-resolution low-end and caustic vocals, bleeds into Estornel’s collaboration with Michael O’Sullivan, “When It All Comes To This,” which sees acid house poetry set against a menacing tech house groove. “The way they go together is a really important moment in the mix,” he explains. “It’s a really good groove; futuristic but really soulful and funky at the same time.” The thread that runs throughout the mix is a compelling darkness. “The whole mix is very dark,” agrees Estornel. “But it’s varied as well. It’s really boring to stay one style. If you’re a lover of music, you don’t love one style. I think it’s important to travel through different styles.” The end result is an education, a lesson in how electronic music for the dancefloor is done with intelligence.

If the custom treatment of older tracks sounds likes a long-winded process, it was. “It took me at least three months. I went through my own stuff and previous DJ-Kicks mixes. Y’know, research. I think it is the most important mix series so I wanted to make sure it was music that I really loved and I want to hear in five or ten years time.” Estornel continues: “I think one of the biggest moments is “Racing Tracks” by Visnadi, the edit that I did. It’s got these racing car sounds and I think that the edit came out really well. It’s a pretty strong moment.”

In time-honoured tradition, the mix contains an exclusive track (in addition to the ten new re-edits). Maceo Plex’s “Galactic Cinema” is a muscular and suitably off-world house chug. “I’m kind of known for a couple of big disco records and some really deep bassline house tracks. This track is much darker, but still pretty sexy and soulful. The whole thing is dark and futuristic.”

“This mix is kind of my legacy, or, at least, part of it,” says Estornel, by way of a parting thought. “In ten or twenty years I’m going to want to go back and listen to this mix and I hope it’s still fresh.”
