Hotflush Recordings presents Back And 4TH

With dubstep’s big push into the mainstream, stirring up all manner of hybrids, variants and mutations, it’s worth remembering that some have been creating fresh twists on the current generation of global bass music from its very inception.

Paul Rose, aka Scuba, and his Hotflush label have, since 2003, had experimentation and genre-collision etched into the very structures of everything they do. Putting out key tunes by the core pioneers of dubstep, but also by true outliers like Mount Kimbie, Joy Orbison and Sepalcure, Hotflush has created a sense of absolute consistence in diversity: multiple sounds united by true craftsmanship and high-tech expression of complex emotion.

Joining the UK underground to the deep-rooted techno culture of Berlin, where Rose is now resident, the label is a vital nexus in the flow of musical information that is fuelling the current innovative climate. So next time you hear someone talking about “post-” this or “future-” that, consider that maybe the times are just catching up with Hotflush.

BACK AND 4TH features ten brand new exclusive tracks from bass music’s most innovative producers including: dBridge, Roska, Boddika and FaltyDL as well as a collection of essentials from Hotflush’s catalogue with tracks and remixes from James Blake, Untold, Pangaea, 2562 and more.

The compilation is presented in double-CD and digital download formats, as well as a triple 12” vinyl release of the first disc.

James Blake covers Feist “Limit To Your Love” ; album due in early 2011

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 11, 2010 by E.N.

James Blake will round off a watershed year with a cover of Feist & Chilly Gonzales’s “Limit To Your Love”, to be released via Atlas Records on November 8.

It serves as the first taster for the 21-year-old’s debut album, which has been slated for release in early 2011. Recorded entirely alone in his bedroom, it also mark Blake’s full vocal debut – and by all accounts he has quite the soulful croon.

Blake kicked off 2010 with The Bells Sketch EP on Ramadanman, Ben UFO and Pangaea’s Hessle Audio, which was swiftly followed by the CMYK 12″ on resurgent Belgian label R&S, which saw the producer sample 90s R&B divas Kelis and Aaliyah in the title track, chopping their vocals into a wider landscape of sonic textures, leftfield beats and dubstep tempos.

His most recent release, Klavierwerke (also on R&S), took post-dubstep (or pubstep as we like to call it) to a new level of esoteric appeal, paying scant attention to the rules of rhythm based music.(juno report)

Download: FACT mix 190 – Kassem Mosse

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 4, 2010 by E.N.

Kassem Mosse frankly blows us away with his FACT mix 190.

The German DJ/producer, real name Gunnar Wendel, has been behind some of the most curious and invigorating house and techno records of the past four years, first coming to our attention with his rugged, syrup-slow contribution to part three of Workshop’s 12″ series. His Aqueous Haze (The World Disappeared Into An) EP followed soon after, and its B-side ’578′ was given a new lease of life this year when Omar-S remixed it and released two versions on his FXHE label.

It’s testament to the Wendel’s versatility and worth as a producer that he’s in not just with the serious heads from Berlin and Detroit, but those from London as well. A Kassem Mosse remix is forthcoming on Joy Orbison’s Doldrums label, and he recently released two tracks, including the grotty beatdown stomper ‘We Speak To Those, on Nonplus Records, the imprint operated by d’n’b emigres Instra:mental and home also to releases by ASC, Skream, dBridge and Actress. Oh, and Mosse has just contributed to the star-studded Commix remix album alongside the likes of Pangaea, Burial and Holland’s 2562.

The Kassem Mosse FACT mix reflects the breadth of Wendel’s production output, but firmly anchors itself in crunchy Detroit fare from Urban Tribe, Andres, Moodymann Theo Parrish and Leron Carson. Put together with a real mastery of groove across different rhythms and tempos, it’s simply one of the most absorbing and addictive FACT mixes we’ve issued all year.

Since quietly dropping a couple of EPs on Hotflush Recordings last year, UK duo Mount Kimbie has shot into the stratosphere, as its recently released debut album, Crooks and Lovers, has taken the whole post-dubstep-future-bass-whatever-it’s-called continuum to a whole new audience. Perhaps it’s the inclusion of field recordings and other organic sounds, or maybe it’s the palpable sense of melancholy in their songs, but the youthful pair has folks practically salivating over their maiden journey to North America, which begins this Friday with a performance at Seattle’s Decibel Festival. Over the course of the following week, Dominic Maker and Kai Campos will trek across the continent before heading back across the pond; a full list of tour dates is here. To celebrate their touchdown on American shores, the boys have assembled this exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series. Much like their own music, the mix finds the guys dabbling in dancefloor sonics, but the duo never abandons its love of woozy low-end hum and experimental wanderlust—not that we’d want them to.
