MUV005 is Catacombs’ second outing on wax. The release itself sets a new benchmark for the MUV imprint, and for Catacombs too as ‘Music Mi Luv’ and ‘Badman Culture pt. 2′ show the young producer relishing a new found energy and pleasure in rhythmic expression, with the former’s perfectly levelled bob and weave and the latter’s quick step and dark techno aesthetic. That both beats have been go-to tunes for two of dubstep’s foundational DJs Hatcha and Youngsta is a testament to the balance they strike between defining a current sound and giving a nod to its future. ‘Cursed’ and ‘Searcher’, both collaborations with label head Demon, combine Catacombs enormous kicks and precise sense of atmosphere and movement with Demon’s penchant for razor-sharp Reese basslines.
Inspired by drum and bass artists such as Noisia, Ed Rush and Optical, and Bad Company, his early productions set about fusing morphing basslines, with the kind of 140 you’d expect from Loefah or Kryptic Minds. Ever expanding on his own sounds, his more recent productions attempt to recreate the cold sound of dark techno such as Oscar Mulero and Raiz, at dubstep tempo. Having first been noticed on Distance’s new talent section in 2011, Catacombs dubs have found themselves in the sets of Youngsta, Hatcha, N-Type, Joe Nice, Anti-Social, Biome, Jack Sparrow and Truth, on radio stations such as BBC 1Xtra, Kiss, Sub FM and Rinse.
Just shy of two years old, both the M.U.D and M.UV imprints have already established themselves as buy-on-sight labels for discerning dubstep heads, earning nominations for Best New Label and Best Label in the 2011 and 2012 Dubstepforum Awards respectively and effectively furthering the crew or ‘family’ aspect of the Unit as it grows to include a passionate and dedicated fanbase who consistently push each release to the top of the sales charts.
