Hosted over five days of round the clock activities between October 27th and 31st 2011, Movement once again brings original performances from the pinnacle of electronic talent and explores the depths and boundaries of contemporary electronic music culture.

Headlined by a stellar live show from worldwide heroes Underworld, Movement Torino 2011 welcomes an all star team of talent from across the spectrum including US heavyweights Green Velvet, Lil Louis and Detroit’s Movement founders Derrick May and Carl Craig, alongside the phenomenon of the moment Visionquest (Seth Troxler, Lee Curtiss, Shaun Reeves and Ryan Crosson), and a sea of new and well championed faces with John Digweed, Damian Lazarus, Steffi, Cassy, Guy Gerber, Shinedoe and Art Department all on the programme.

The European edition of the festival was staged for the first time outside the U.S. on December 15th, 2006 in Torino to celebrate the closing of the Winter Olympics. Since then, during the week before Halloween, Movement has engulfed Torino’s most symbolic locations, taking place in Olympic arenas, clubs, museums and universities and become the most anticipated event in Italy for electronic music lovers. Each year the event attracts a growing audience from all over Europe and places Torino as a cultural exchange on par with Detroit and other electronic music communities such as Berlin, Ibiza, Amsterdam and Tokyo.

A dense schedule of meetings, workshops and special events are sandwiched between superior live and DJ sets. The five-day program transforms the city into a hub of new sounds, new technologies and contemporary art. The special 2011 episode will connect quality and entertainment through creative ways that will astonish the public.

PROGRAMME

The Movement Festival comes alive on October 27th with an exceptional cast, which will culminate in a crescendo on Monday, October 31 with the final show at the Turin Palalsozaki. The inaugural happening on Thursday 27th will feature two rising stars of electronics world, the Irish visionary Space Dimension Controller and the enfant prodige Kyle Hall from Detroit.

On Friday 28th tackling new genres and modes of experimentation at the Conservatory of Torino are Aufgang, born from an encounter between Rami Khalifè pianists, Francesco Tristano and drummer Avmeric Westrich, and emerging as a concert of piano, drums and electronic contamination.

Saturday 29th hosts the exclusive Circoloco party, voted the best party in Ibiza and founded by Italian locals. Circo Loco programme four diverse eclectic artists from their pool. Reaching from the beat of Detroit techno, Stacey Pullen, into the acid, minimal and Chicago experiments of the French master, DJ W!ld, through the freshness and raw energy of Tania Vulcano and concluding with the talented grooves of David Squillace from Naples.

Sunday 30th brings two appointments to capture the attention of the masses and lead the way for grand finale scheduled for Halloween night. Commencing with the Superga Day, this Happy Happening marks 100 years of the oldest Italian brand of shoes accompanied by the sound of Lil´Louis. This legendary Chicago producer needs no introduction as he is known to be one of the founders of house music. This great day for music will end in the mythical place of Murazzi Po, a landing boathouse on the river Po.

As in previous years the Palaolimpico Isozaki structure, built for the 2006 Winter Olympics and now the temple of the best international music, will reveal itself as a perfect space for the final ritual of Movement on Monday, October 31st. Its shimmering mirrors, frosted glass, metal surfaces, and ultra-slick setting will spill over with chic and passionate revellers from all over mainland Europe. Taking over four rooms at Palaolimpico will be the biggest names from the international electronic community, all earning their place in this special rite of passage. The highly anticipated English duo riding the world scene for two decades, Underworld will make their only Italian performance this autumn, presenting exclusively for Movement the new record Barking and a concert promising to inscribe into the history of contemporary music.

Live showcases also come from Carl Craig with his project 69, Green Velvet, Guy Gerber, and Laurent Garnier. The great talents of John Digweed, Cassy, Shinedoe, Mirko Loco, Tama Sumo and many more will form a cast that unites Europe and the USA fusing together the peak of current acts and forging their inventive and unique personalities.

Space Dimension Controller -The Pathway to Tiraquon6

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , on September 23, 2011 by E.N.

The Pathway to Tiraquon6 is the prequel to the Space Dimension Controller debut album ‘Welcome To Mikrosector-50’ to be released in 2012.

In the mid 24th Century, a cosmic accident caused Mr. 8040, the Space Dimension Controller, to spiral back through time to the year 2009.

Over the past year, stranded in our time, and confined to his Electropod. Mr. 8040 has been preparing an account of the events that led to the discovery of Mikrosector-50 and the creation of the Tiraquon6 security barrier. This is the story of the Pathway to Tiraquon6.

In the year 2257 AD, Planet Earth was invaded by an alien race known as the Pulsovians. Having had no previous encounters with a hostile alien race, the humans were completely unprepared for an invasion of this scale. Using technology unique to their race, they drained the energy of the sun and as an alternative to living on a slowly dying planet, they offered mankind the opportunity to work as slaves on their home planet, Cosmo30.

Though most took this opportunity, there was a small coalition of humans that sought to flee Earth and find a new home somewhere in deep space. It was then that the Pulsovian leader, Xymah the Usurper, coordinated a surprise attack on the escape vessels as they attempted to launch. Many vessels successfully escaped the attack and ventured deep into space, others were destroyed, including that of the President of Earth and his cabinet.

For years, the last remnants of free man were confined to deep space with no government, no order and no hope. That was until a security officer named Max Tiraquon offered to travel alone to neighbouring galaxies in an attempt to find a planet suitable for human habitation. Just over a year into Max’s exploration, contact with his electropod was lost, it was thought he had been lost to space.

Years later, an unidentifiable craft was detected on the radar of the main vessel. It was Max, he had used the fluorescent trails left behind by his electropod to navigate his way back to the ship. Upon his return, he told of a planet in Mikrosector-50 of the deep space grid with an atmosphere similar to that of Earth. The humans set a course to the planet immediately and on their arrival began to plan the construction of their new home. Max founded the Tiraquon Security Council and construction began on the Tiraquon Security Barrier, and a soldier named Mr. 8040 was appointed to patrol the the barrier. Mr. 8040 was made Deputy Space Dimension Controller and for the following years successfully maintained order whilst Mikrosector-50 was constructed. Until one day, whilst repairing a light beam in the Quadrasector of the barrier, Mr. 8040′s electropod almost slammed into the beam. To escape certain death, Mr. 8040 activated the micron accelerator of his electropod, which inadvertently sent him back through time to the year 2009.

James Priestley and Giles Smith present 10th years of Secretsundaze on a double mix Cd

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 1, 2011 by E.N.

On the eve of its 10th anniversary, secretsundaze are proud to present their 3rd double mix CD mixed by residents and founder members, James Priestley and Giles Smith. As an added bonus for those picking up one of the first 500 copies of the CD, there’s a chance of finding a free ticket inside for a selected number of secretsundaze parties over the summer.

The story is well documented but just to recap secretsundaze has maintained its position as bastion of underground house, techno and disco in London and for many, is considered the godfather of the UK’s daytime events. Started in 2002 by a group of school friends who tired of the lack of parties in east London combining quality electronic music with unique locations. The focus on open-air venues with natural daylight, a rarity at the time, with the forward thinking musical policy, proved to be a heady combination. In just a few years the party was catapulted to notoriety with crowds swelling from a few hundred to a few thousand, initially through word of mouth and then as it became the media’s darling.

10 years on and secretsundaze has spread worldwide with regular shows at European hotspots such as Panorama Bar, Robert Johnson, Fabric, Trouw Amsterdam, Barcelona’s La Terrrazza, infamously in Ibiza and even further afield, in Tokyo and NYC. Not forgetting their regular London events – this year’s opening party having sold out over a week before the event. Fortunately, secretsundaze isn’t just a party these days, their unique sound furthered by both it’s new booking agency, The Secret Agency which looks after almost 20 hand-picked artists and the eponymous record label which has recently begun releasing original EPs.
So having brought the unitiated up to speed, ‘10 years of secretsundaze’ is a both a retrospective and a culmination of what the founders intended the party to be – the music, the energy and its history.

James once again guides the listener from the first moments as the doors open, through the sunny (or not so sunny) afternoons and finally onto those longing closers, always exemplifying his eclectic tastes with it’s strong house sensibility. In this way he comes as close as possible in capturing those Sunday session’s spirit of reckless abandon. The mix begins patiently with recent releases from Mark E and 2010 whiz kid Space Dimension Controller, before picking up the pace, moving into steadier garagey territory, with tracks from George Levings’ (Commix) GHL moniker and Parisian Frank Roger. Being the party’s 10th anniversary celebration, it was only right to include some of James’ favourites, played mostly in the formative years of the club, but still sounding as fresh and relevant in his sets today. There’s the little-known gem ‘Taking Over Me’ by Marcus Intalex + S.T. Files, Recloose’s off kilter broken beat ‘Ain’t Changin’ and the Detroit inspired sub-heavy proto-UK bass ‘Cargo’ from Zed Bias’ alter- ego Maddslinky. Once peaked, the mix heads into more distinctive electronic territory, with contributions from Jimmy Edgar as Xdistrict and the simply stunning ‘Tan Sedan’ from DJ Harvey’s latest project. This is a massive licensing coup as, to this date, only Optimo’s Fabric mix has been granted the use of material from Locussolus. Metope and Steffi are responsible for taking things down into deeper, headier territory, before a sneaky ‘one-more’ with Voyage’s 1980 underground bomb ‘I Love You Dancer’ drawing things warmly to a heartfelt close.

Giles’ love of the sheer craft of a mix is clear to see: his podcasts for Resident Advisor, Audio Families and most recently Little White Earbuds are highly regarded as perfect illustrations of his uncompromising, slow-building style. Just like his contributions to the previous secretsundaze mixes he kicks off with exquisitely warm dubby house from Roosevelt and Charles, Chicago’s Specter and Detroit legend Dan Bell in his KB Project guise. Picking up the tempo slightly Giles weighs in with some bonafide secretsundaze classics in the shape of the Salt City Orchestra remix of ‘Mushrooms’ and Dubtribe’s remix of East West Connection. The dreamy yet insistent ‘Hideaway Lane’ on the excellent Dial subsidiary Laid then makes way for some heavier techno workouts and arguably the mix’s peak with the slamming MRSK remix of Anthony Shakir closely followed by the massive burner, Rolando’s remix of Skudge. Smoothing things out again, Giles’ own ‘Ronin’ deftly appears marking the return of his production duo Two Armadillos with long-term collaborator Martin Dawson. Triumphant Detroit flavours from Steven Tang and Tornado Wallace then permeate, signaling the end is in sight before making way for a return to some very deep and hypnotic closers from the Smallville camp, the aptly titled ‘Life Aquatic’ and ‘Insulate’, an otherworldly groove from US artists Slam Mode.

10 Years of secretsundaze’ is yet another perfect snapshot of the duo’s ability to throw together undiscovered classics with the newest, freshest sounds without ever compromising to trends. With a supporting world tour heading through Berlin, Barcelona, New York, Tokyo and Ibiza to name just a few, the label primed with a whole slew of 12” releases to come and The Secret Agency going from strength to strength, 2011 is set to be yet another blow-out year for secretsundaze’s 10th birthday.

The time-traveling producer brings out a funk-filled selection for the RA podcast.

Space Dimension Controller was born sometime in the 24th century. Lucky for us, then, that he traveled back in time, crashed his Electropod and has been stuck here for just long enough to release some of the finest and funkiest electro-tinged records of 2010. (That, or he’s Jack Hamill, a young Belfast producer obsessed with hardware.) SDC’s sound may be retro-tinged, but it has excited everyone from Kyle Hall (who remixed SDC on Clone’s Royal Oak) to Josh Wink to the brains behind legendary techno label R&S.

Untold – Stereo Freeze R&S Records 12″ Vinyl(RS1009)(preview)

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 30, 2010 by E.N.

R&S follow the massive singles from Pariah, James Blake, Model 500 and Space Dimension Controller with the debut release on the label by Untold. One of the leading lights of the scene, his Hemlock label continues to blur the boundaries between, dubstep, house and techno and also provides a home for likeminded souls James Blake and Ramadanman. When not running and recording for Hemlock he also records for Hessle and Hotflush, remixes for the likes of Planet Mu and Bpitch, and also has a debut album on the horizon. His music makes total sense on R&S, taking inspiration from the classic house, techno, jungle and rave that made the label what it is. Put this all together with the finesse and skill of one of the most hyped UK producers around and it’s a no brainer that it’s another essential slab of wax from the truly back on form label. ‘Stereo Freeze’ is aimed directly at the dancefloor and updates the classic Detroit electro sound for 2010. It’s going to unite the old school R&S heads who can file it with their dusty Dopplereffekt and Model 500 vinyl, and the young enthusiasts who have discovered the label through James Blake and Pariah. Play Loud! ‘Mass Dreams Of The Future’ mixes muted rave stabs and more electro basslines over some shuffling future house beats and deft sub bass, and perfectly accompanies the lairier a-side. With both producer and label having the utmost respect for each other, this was always going to be a release worth waiting for.

Download: FACT mix 185 – Midland

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 17, 2010 by E.N.

Midland takes charge of  185th FACT mix.

The up-and-coming producer/DJ announced his arrival earlier this year with the ‘Your Words Matter’ 12″, a collaboration with his friend Ramadanman released on Will Saul’s Aus Music label. This was followed by Play The Game, a four-track EP on Phonica Records that really showcased the breadth of his sound. Midland makes warm, tensile house and techno, but the narrative shape of his tracks and his regular deployment of fragmented, ethereal vocal snippets betray the influence – conscious or otherwise – of dubstep individualists Burial, Pangaea and Joy Orbison.

If his epic 23-track FACT mix is anything to go by, our man also draws inspiration from much further afield. It’s packed with unreleased material, including Midland originals ‘Shelter’, ‘Hub’ and ‘Dead Eyes’, together with his remix of Caribou’s ‘Sun’ and cheeky re-edits of Washed Out and Massive Attack, and Appleblim & Ramadanman’s immense, forthcoming ‘Void 23′. There’s also classic house from Kerri Chandler, shark-eyed minimal from Arnaud Le Texier  and DJ Koze, plus recent cuts from Space Dimension Controller, Workshop, 6th Borough Project and a special edit of Boards Of Canada exclusive to this mix.
