Spoek Mathambo -Control(Video)

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , on February 23, 2011 by E.N.

Control, fourth video from Spoek Mathambo’s debut album Mshini Wam, is a darkwave township house cover of the Joy Division classic ‘She’s Lost Control’. For the music video, Spoek has collaborated with one of South Africa’s most celebrated photographers, Pieter Hugo & cinematographer Michael Cleary. It explores the world of township cults, street preaches and teen gangs and was shot on location in a squatted train boarding house in Langa, Cape Town. The cast is mainly made up of the neighborhood kids who run their own dance troop, Happy Feet.

Spoek Mathambo (www.spoekmathambo.com) has been putting the world onto his brave, progressive take African music for the past number of years (through his own music as well as DJing under the name HIVIP) and most recently, through the release of both his solo album and assembling a band to realise his afro-futurist dream.

Pieter Hugo (www.pieterhugo.com) is a South Africa artist/photographer whose work has been exhibited, published and collected internationally. He has published numerous monographs, which include ‘The Hyena & Other Men’. His most recent publication is called ‘Permanent Error’ and deals with an expansive dump of obsolete technology on the outskirts of Accra in Ghana.

Michael Cleary (www.michaelcleary.co.za) has a strong background in advertising and went into photography 15 years ago, to become a cinematographer today. He enjoys working with talented artists on personal projects.

Spoek Mathambo-Don’t Mean To Be Rude(Video+Free Download+EP Stream))

Don’t Mean To Be Rude is the third single from South African artist, Spoek Mathambo’s debut album Mshini Wam. The video features the booty-crazed rapper locked in a weird basement with the devil and his dominatrix sidekicks (played by Johannesburg’s grimiest erotic dancers) ; a rigged dice match and some obscure feeder games.

It’s common knowlege that whenever someone starts a sentence with the phrase, ‘I don’t mean to be rude’, you should brace yourself for some low down and dirty rudeness or run for the hills.

Here, Spoek Mathambo brings the rudeness via an accelerated skank courtesy of London bass rangers LV (most widely known for their genre defying releases on Hyperdub). Canadian avant soul singer Zaki Ibrahim plays the co-conspirator on the bassy nugget adding something sweet to Spoek’s gutter mouth party song.

In general, whenever someone starts a sentence with the phrase, ‘I don’t mean
to be rude’, you should be worried, brace yourself for some low down and dirty rudeness or run for the hills like a p***y.

In this case, Spoek Mathambo is inviting you to join in on the dirty fun with the
third single ‘Don’t Mean To Be Rude’ from his debut album ‘Mshini Wam’. The South African wunderkind is bringing the rudeness via an accelerated skank courtesy of London bass rangers LV (most widely known for their epic releases on Hyperdub).
Canadian avant soul singer Zaki Ibrahim. plays the co-conspirator on the bassy nugget adding something sweet to Spoek’s gutter mouth party song.
Levels go peak with an allstar team of remixers… Yep, we went for Olympic Gold on this one! UK bass music impresario, Scratcha DVA (UK, Hyperdub – Rinse FM), froggy party ! killers, Toadally Krossed Out (USA, Mad Decent) and French club ambassador, Don Rimini (FR, Mental Groove) brought in the medals with their club remixes.

I don’t mean to be rude, but the music video of Don’t Mean To Be Rude features some of Johannesburg’s grimiest erotic dancers shaking their thick backs; a rigged dice match against the devil and a little dominatrix display…African style!!!

I don’t mean to be rude but if you don’t cop this one…you’re just not living right!!

Released: 2010-07-27

Part of a new breed of African artists, 24 year old Spoek Mathambo (Rapper/DJ and Graphic Designer/Illustrator) is hitting the world hard with his take on Afro-futurism. Spoek sees himself as a part of a new wave of energy in Africa, which is intent on nurturing a sense of progressiveness while maintaining a pride in culture. As front-man for electrorap outfits SWEAT.X and PLAYDOE, Spoek Mathambo has become a increasingly prominent figure in the international music scene over the last couple of years.

Most recently, Spoek Mathambo has finished recording his solo album, “Mshini Wam” for BBE, and has built a live band (which includes two dancers) in order to tour the project.
The album is a sign to the world of what Africa has in store in terms of progressive electronic music!
The title “Mshini Wam” is from a famous Zulu song called Umshini wami, (English: My Machine), often sung by members of the military wing of the ANC and the South African pres! ident himself whenever they are in trouble – in their version it means: “Bring Me My Machine Gun”. Yet for Spoek Mathambo Mshini Wam has quite a different meaning: “My Machine…A way to express a new wave of electronic African music!”.

Spoek has risen to become one of the foremost recognised exporters of the new South African club music (which he has coined as Township Tech). He has gathered widespread attention as far afield as the New York Times and Fader Magazine.
The single release “Mshini Wam b/w Gwababa (Don’t Be Scared)” features two tracks taken from the album as well as a generous load of exciting remixes.

THEY SAY

“Mokgata is Ndebele royalty descended from the Maraba royal family of Polokwane, and the singer, dancer, songwriter and fashion-face of Sweat.X. He lives in Johannesburg.”

“Spoek Mathambo is a slippery post-Apartheid glam-rap prince from Soweto who is descended from distant African royalty, or Jewish, or both. In addition to our online communications trail, I have two weeks worth of phone bills—a Paris mobile, a London office number, some digits that connect to a voice speaking Arabic—to prove how hard it is to catch up to him.”

“And so to Spoek Mathambo. As one half of Sweat X, Soweto’s Spoek (aka Nthato Mokgata) has been a constant blog presence over the last 12-18 months, turning blog heads onto electro and hip hop South African sounds. Whether it’s his work with Playdoe (with Sibot), Bulgarian or DJ Edjotronic (with a new 12″ on Boyz Noize dropping soon), Spoek’s name repeatedly resurfaces – of late, in the form of his own ongoing mix series.”
