Gangrene – Vodka & Ayahuasca

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 10, 2012 by E.N.

Famed producer and prodigy of Mobb Deep, The Alchemist and west-coast rapper/beatsmith Oh No continue their grimy collaboration as Gangrene with their new album, ‘Vodka & Ayahuasca’ out on Decon, this  year.

‘Vodka & Ayahuasca’ is the follow-up to gritty opus ‘Gutter Water’ and their 2011 EP collaboration with Roc Marciano (who will be releasing his own album through Decon in 2012). With both Al and Oh making beats and holding down the mic, their new record weaves a psychedelic, head-nodding, substance-laden tale.

The album rocks choice features, including Kool G Rap on the mid-tempo masterpiece ‘Gladiator Music’, Prodigy on the quintessential ‘Dump Truck’, and long time allies Evidence and Roc C spitting over blunted boast, ‘Dark Shades’. In addition, New York’s own Roc Marciano blasts off on the suggestive ‘Drink Up’. The top notch collaborations blend right in to the album from beginning to end and add another dimension to an already lyric ridden record.

While Ayahuasca (pronounced aya-hwaska) — a natural trip-inducing brew containing DMT — may not be a term on the tongues of your every day hip hop head, that’s soon to change. The Alchemist and Oh No are the gatekeepers for this psychedelic gutter-rap experience.

Of these underground kingpins, The Alchemist has put down the deepest roots. He made his name making beats for the likes of Mobb Deep, Nas and Lil Wayne, and as Eminem’s tour DJ, he appeared on the BBC’s Jonathan Ross show. Oh No has released solo albums on Stones Throw, worked with the likes of Ghostface Killah and Redman, and is known as the biggest computer games fan in the rap world.

A European tour in support of ‘Vodka & Ayahuasca’ is scheduled for early 2012, dates TBC.

Stones Throw recording artist Anika North American Tour Dates this Fall

Stones Throw recording artist Anika
embarks on long awaited
North American debut tour this Fall.

Dates include ATP, NYC, MoogFest, LA, SF, Chicago, Seattle, Austin, Detroit , Toronto
+ more

After extensive touring throughout the U.K. and Europe, the England-born, Berlin-bred Anika finally embarks on a long awaited tour of North America. Flanked by key appearances at the Portishead-curated All Tomorrows Parties in Asbury Park, NJ and MoogFest in Asheville, NC.

Fans and critics alike were captivated, if not caught off guard; disarmed by the raw emotion of Anika’s self-titled debut album (Stones Throw / Invada). Released amidst the blizzard of last December, Anika painted a stark black & white with telling covers and teeming originals. Inhabiting and subsequently haunting the words of Bob Dylan, Yoko Ono and Peggy Lee – atop a musical foundation built by Geoff Barrow (Portishead) and the members of Beak>. William Fuller (Bass) and Matthew Williams (Keys, Guitar) of Beak> join the run, alongside Andrew Sutor (Drums) and Rasha Shaheen (Backing Vox, Keys, Guitar) making up Anika’s live-band.

The New York Times called the release “Startling”. The Los Angeles Times deemed it “Striking”. With Rolling Stone (Germany) granting the debut disc a 4.5 of 5 rating. Anika’s and her fellow musicians approach is simple, but basked in subdued complexities. Anika’s debut North American tour proves to bring these elements to the stage.

Psych Funk Sa-Re-Ga! Funk Music in India 1970-1983+Free MP3

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , on November 26, 2010 by E.N.

Compilation on World Psychedelic Funk Classics. 20 Indian Psych-Funk Masterpieces. 2LP with full-sized 20 page color booket.  CD with 52 page color booklet.

Our friends at World Psychedelic Classics (Psych Funk 101/Brazilian Guitar Fuzz Bananas) have been serving fellow students of the global phenomenon of psychedelic funk music well; here’s another collection of funky, heavy, psychedelic wonders – this time from the melodic wonderland of India. Welcome to Psych Funk Sa Re Ga!

Much of the music on this compilation that covers the “golden years” of the movement (from approximately 1970 until 1982) and springs from the Bollywood film industry. Thus, Psych Funk Sa Re Ga! compiles some of the work of composers such as R.D. Burman and the brothers known as Kalyanji Anandji – specifically their experiments in the fusion of India’s classical traditions of Hindustani and Carnatic music, folk music such as bhangra and dandiya and Western psychedelia and funk music.

Psych Funk Sa Re Ga! also includes off the beaten path Indian experiments in Psych Funk – for example, two songs from the Simla Beat garage-psych albums, and an oft-heard Deep Purple cover by the ground-breaking Atomic Forest – alongside examples of the Indian Psych Funk

influence on European 70s musicians. Throughout the extensive liner notes – many of which delve into the history of the musicians and ensembles behind these little-heard classics – World Psychedelic Funk Classics attempts to broaden the definition of global psychedelia and shine light on the Indian progenitors of some of the wildest, funkiest, fuzziest music this world has ever heard.

This limited edition piece comes as a deluxe digipak CD, including a 52-page full color booklet with liner notes, photos and other ephemera. It also comes in 2LP gatefold packaging with an over sized full color booklet with the same detailed liner notes and imagery included.

Download:Mount Kimbie -XLR8R podcast 161

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 22, 2010 by E.N.

Since quietly dropping a couple of EPs on Hotflush Recordings last year, UK duo Mount Kimbie has shot into the stratosphere, as its recently released debut album, Crooks and Lovers, has taken the whole post-dubstep-future-bass-whatever-it’s-called continuum to a whole new audience. Perhaps it’s the inclusion of field recordings and other organic sounds, or maybe it’s the palpable sense of melancholy in their songs, but the youthful pair has folks practically salivating over their maiden journey to North America, which begins this Friday with a performance at Seattle’s Decibel Festival. Over the course of the following week, Dominic Maker and Kai Campos will trek across the continent before heading back across the pond; a full list of tour dates is here. To celebrate their touchdown on American shores, the boys have assembled this exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series. Much like their own music, the mix finds the guys dabbling in dancefloor sonics, but the duo never abandons its love of woozy low-end hum and experimental wanderlust—not that we’d want them to.
