AMIT ‘Human Warfare / No Mercy’ + Machinedrum rmx (AMAR) 29th July

AMAR001_A_SIDE_RGB_9283dbFollowing critically acclaimed releases on Metalheadz,Commercial SuicideExit Records and most recently Tempa, AMIT’s ‘Human Warfare’ and ‘No Mercy’ are the first tracks to be released on his new AMAR imprint, setting the tone as to what you should expect from the new label.

The 12” kicks off with ‘Human Warfare’, a dark and brooding piece acting as the soundtrack to a foot soldiers mind – programmed to kill at any cost without any memory or responsibility of the act itself. AMIT has dug deep into his pool of influences and techniques – half-time metallic drums, paranoid vocals, sinister backdrops and thunderous low sonics drench the track. With a variety of support from DJ’s such as MachinedrumGoldie,dBridgeDoc ScottYoungstaRandallKrust and Loxy, this track is likely to be heard at any night regardless of genre.

‘No Mercy’ was inspired by historical colonial methods of ‘divide and rule’, hence the title. Featuring the spaced out vocals of tag team partner Rani, AMIT is up to his usual dub antics on this one by deploying tribal grooves, staggered organ hits and a thunderous sub. Support for this track has come from Mala,YoungstaDistanceVivekJ:KenzoKryptic Minds and a host of other 140bpm stalwarts.

Machinedrum jumps on remix duties for a special digital only version of ‘Human Warfare’, flipping the rigid feel of the original into a shuffling affair. Drum breaks and ambience float in and out of the music, keeping a sense of flippancy and unrest that propels the track.

Addison Groove (aka Antony Williams) started life under a different pseudonym altogether. Recording as Headhunter, with an LP and 12” releases on the influential Tempa label stretching back to 2007, he achieved legendary status within the dubstep scene. His work at the deeper end of the spectrum graced the label an impressive 7 times, a figure matched only by Skream. This work looked set to continue until 2010 when, seemingly out of nowhere, he crafted one of the biggest bass music tracks of the decade, ‘Footcrab’, under the new name of Addison Groove.

The response to ‘Footcrab’ was phenomenal, receiving critical and commercial success in equal measure across the dance music scene. Getting plays not only from the dubstep DJs that Williams was used to reaching, it also found its way into the record boxes of techno and house heavyweights such as Aphex Twin, Surgeon, Ricardo Villalobos and Mr Scruff, bringing an enormous new audience to his music in the process. Taking influences from the Chicago ghetto tek and juke scenes, Addison Groove’s impact on UK bass music has been colossal and unprecedented, sparking a huge interest in these styles from his peers and the listening public alike.

Transistor Rhythm“, Addison Groove’s debut album, is a rare example of a release where the description “much anticipated” is not just a fantasy of some PR agent. The expectations are high, but we are convinced nobody is gonna be disappointed. Hear for yourself!

Skream Outside the Box July 26th

Ollie Jones, better known as Skream, will release his next full-length this summer on Tempa.

Outside the Box will be Jones’ second album to date, following his self-titled 2006 debut. He’s kept himself extremely busy in the years since that release, putting out dozens of 12-inches on Tempa, Tectonic and Non Plus among others, and playing gigs around the world as one of dubstep’s biggest names. A notoriously prolific producer, he’s already released a total of 81 tunes since 2003, and reportedly has around 20,000 more sitting on a hard drive in his studio, which is still located in his old bedroom at his parents’ house in Croyden, England.

The record will feature a host of guest appearances, including vocals by rapper Murs and synthpop outfit La Roux, whose track “In For The Kill” made great remix fodder for Skream last year. Drum & bass artists D-Bridge and Instra:mental contribute as well, by co-producing the track “Reflections.”

Word has it the album will be followed by a sixth edition in the widely-loved Skreamizm series, though details on that release are still forthcoming.

It seems like only yesterday that FaltyDL (a.k.a. Drew Lustman) was just another mild-mannered NYC beatmaker whose little album on Planet Mu had wormed its way into our hearts. Actually, it was only last summer. Regardless, the last 10 months have been a veritable FaltyDL whirlwind, as Lustman has followed up Love Is a Liability with top-flight releases on Ramp and Rush Hour, not to mention remixes for Mount Kimbie and The xx. He’s also made multiple trips across the Atlantic to showcase his DJ stylings—not bad for a guy who headlined our first TURRBOTAX® party. Now that Mr. DL has become a certified big deal, it’s nice to see that he’s retained his fondness for XLR8R, as he actually asked to contribute this exclusive mix for our podcast series. Containing a number of his own productions alongside some classic dubstep, skittery 2-step, and even some juke (courtesy of new labelmate DJ Nate), the mix is surprisingly soulful, even when the beats get a bit manic. It certainly has us excited for whatever FaltyDL has planned for the next 10 months.
