After last years re-release of grime anthem Anger Management (which is lauded as a definitive Grime classic partly due to the D Double Evocal) on Terror Danjah’s Hardrive label, PJam (pronounced pee-jam) has been on a steady ascent back to the forefront of the UK’s Grime scene. After a short stint away from music production, his newly-inked BeatCamp label has already seen him collaborate with the likes of Shystie and the imprint continues to act as a vessel to release his much sought-after productions.
With more releases on BeatCamp and Hardrive scheduled for the coming months, ‘Gas’ is only a taster of what’s to come from PJam’s multi-faceted production arsenal and his return adds another element of excitement to the resurgence of Grime producers into the wider electronic music scene.
Rude Kid’s diverse production styles and burgeoning back catalogue of underground anthems have seen him rise through grime’s ranks without looking back. His unique brand of ‘Alien Music’ has led to him working with the likes of Wiley, Skepta, Kano, JME and Ghetto, making him the go to producer for the top artists and becoming a staple in the record boxes of Joker, Plastician, Terror Danjah and Oneman to name a few.

Princesss Nyah’s vocals sit comfortably on this production but still work well with the rugged drum programming that Champion has mastered since his ‘Motherboard’ debut in 2011. As Princess Nyah vents her frustration at a disloyal member of the opposite sex, the low end basslines become more intense and boisterous and this only adds to the smooth but gritty nature of the track.
On the flipside Hardrive head honcho Terror Danjah teams up with D.O.K for a haunted re-rub that still retains the danceable element of the original, but comes with the signature Terror Danjah cackle and gremlins soundbytes. The pair do their best to increase the tracks intensity with 16-bar beat pattern switch ups and haunting chords throughout which gives the track a unexpected but welcomed Grime makeover.
Having been a staple in sets from the likes of Scratcha, Roska, Dusk & Blackdown and Target towards the end of 2011, ‘Crazy’ has picked up where Champion left off with ‘Sensitivity’ and shows just why his work with vocals has been so highly revered as of late.

Off the back of her summer collaboration, Full Attention with Terror Danjah, Ruby Lee Ryder lends her vocals to this silky Champion production. With her delicate vocal harmonies she sings in a lullaby like fashion which compliments the subtle synth stabs and refined chopped up bassline.

2. Lighter VIP
After much anticipation one of UK funky’s brightest stars, Champion, finally drops his deadly Lighter EP as the inaugural release on his new imprint, Formula Records.
Sitting somewhere in between Lil’ Silva, Roska and Cooly G Champion has got the undiluted UK Funky sound down to perfection. He’s already been marked as one to watch by Fact Magazine and Champion is growing as a producer with each release. The Lighter EP exemplifies the style and sound that has got him the admiration and plaudits from DJ’s across the board – raw, rugged and rhythmic in abundance.
Lead single Lighter showcases his seductive percussion techniques with stripped back drums setting the stage early on and an audacious bass melody that is aggressive but playful at the same time.
Bongoshot sees Champions play with more futuristic synths but the syncopated drum pattern and arpeggiated bass that accompanies it brings it right up to the present day sound of the UK underground.
Off the back of the infectious Motherboard EP on Terror Danjah’s Hardrive label earlier this year the Lighter EP has proven longevity given the fact that it has been played constantly by the likes of Kode 9, Benji B, Bok Bok, Roska and Oneman for the past 18 months yet its release is still highly sought after.
To get a taster of the Champion sound in a club then look no further than the audio from the recent Butterz & Hardrive extravaganza at Cable from a few weeks back which contains a barrage of his productions both old and new.
