Champion – Lighter EP- Formula Records – FRM001

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 25, 2011 by E.N.

Artist: Champion
Title: Lighter EP
Label: Formula Records
Release Date: 5th September (Vinyl) & 12th September (Digital)
Catalogue Number: FRM001

Tracklisting

1. Lighter
2. Lighter VIP
3. Bongoshot

After much anticipation one of UK funky’s brightest stars, Champion, finally drops his deadly Lighter EP as the inaugural release on his new imprint, Formula Records.

Sitting somewhere in between Lil’ Silva, Roska and Cooly G Champion has got the undiluted UK Funky sound down to perfection. He’s already been marked as one to watch by Fact Magazine and Champion is growing as a producer with each release. The Lighter EP exemplifies the style and sound that has got him the admiration and plaudits from DJ’s across the board – raw, rugged and rhythmic in abundance.

Lead single Lighter showcases his seductive percussion techniques with stripped back drums setting the stage early on and an audacious bass melody that is aggressive but playful at the same time.

Bongoshot sees Champions play with more futuristic synths but the syncopated drum pattern and arpeggiated bass that accompanies it brings it right up to the present day sound of the UK underground.

Off the back of the infectious Motherboard EP on Terror Danjah’s Hardrive label earlier this year the Lighter EP has proven longevity given the fact that it has been played constantly by the likes of Kode 9, Benji B, Bok Bok, Roska and Oneman for the past 18 months yet its release is still highly sought after.

To get a taster of the Champion sound in a club then look no further than the audio from the recent Butterz & Hardrive extravaganza at Cable from a few weeks back which contains a barrage of his productions both old and new.

It’s funny, no matter how many times grime has been declared dead, the rough-and-ready genre keeps coming back for more. Undeterred by the scene’s unfortunate detours into inter-crew beefs, clashes with law enforcement, and out-and-out hypermasculinity, young Rinse FM jocks Elijah & Skilliam are taking grime back to the days when the music was fun, the tempos were fast, and producers were king…. The scene’s godfather looks to the future of grime on this week’s RA podcast.

Of all the hardcore continuum’s many tributaries, grime has kept the lowest profile outside of the UK—although one of the scene’s original innovators has been triumphantly addressing that fact this year. Terror Danjah was initially associated with the pioneering Nasty Crew out of East London and latterly the Aftershock crew. He’s produced seminal genre workouts like ” Love Is Here to Stay,” “Cock Back” and “Creepy Crawler,” many of which were collected on last year’s Gremlinz compilation through Planet Mu. Danjah continued to work with Mike Paradinas’ trailblazing imprint this year, putting out the excellent Power Grid EP in July, while his fresh instrumental explorations were further expanded upon via November’s Undeniable LP through Hyperdub. The sound of his artist album proper is nicely indicative of his 60-minute mix for us: garage, dubstep, house, rave and classic grime combine alchemically to produce something that very often feels not of any genre.

Of all the figures in the post-dubstep diaspora, few have been as instrumental as Bok Bok. As most readers of XLR8R probably know, the London-based producer/DJ is also the co-founder of the Night Slugs imprint, which has quickly established itself at the top of the heap when it comes to the forward-thinking house and bass music that continues to spring forth from the UK’s long-running hardcore continuum. His place in the canon of UK dance music aside, it’s worth mentioning that Bok Bok (a.k.a. Alex Sushon) is also a highly skilled DJ who is just as likely to pull out a classic house or grime tune as he is a futuristic dubplate. As such, we’ve been hounding him for the past year to put together an exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast, and he’s come through in fine style, littering his mix with unheard gems from Night Slugs brethren (Girl Unit, Jam City, Optimum), fellow UK heavy hitters (Geeneus, Ikonika, Untold, Terror Danjah), and a few unexpected jams that still go down smooth—after all, it’s hard to argue with kwaito, Dam-Funk, or Azari & III in any mix.

It may be a little early to start handing out Label of the Year nominations, but as it stands now, it would be hard to omit London’s Night Slugs imprint from serious consideration. Label bosses Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990 may get the lion’s share of the attention, but the artist roster they’ve assembled is just as impressive, perhaps none more so than 24-year-old DJ, producer, and recent Bubblin’ subject Girl Unit. With only one official release and a smattering of remixes and other tracks to his name, he nonetheless displays a keen ear for US street sounds, whether it be ghettotech and juke or radio-ready hip-hop and R&B. This week, the London-based artist is embarking on his first US tour, during which he’ll hopefully be able to take in some of these sounds first-hand while playing a smattering of dates on both coasts. To celebrate, he’s put together this mix for the XLR8R podcast series, which literally came in at the last minute because he wanted to make extra sure to fill it with the latest dubplates and unreleased tunes.

Download: FACT mix 156 – Kode9

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 7, 2010 by E.N.

Today’s FACT mix comes from the man behind Hyperdub, and one of modern dance music’s most celebrated producers and DJs, Kode9.

Debuting on Tempa in 2002 with ‘Fat Larry’s Skank’, Kode9 has spent the last decade exploring an aesthetic that’s taken him from suffocating dread-filled dubstep to toxic house music. Along the way, he’s released a superb album (Memories of the Future, with frequent collaborator Spaceape) and become just as famous for his record label as his own productions: since Hyperdub’s inception in 2004, it’s released albums by Burial, Ikonika and King Midas Sound, and singles by Zomby, Terror Danjah, Cooly G, Mala and more.

This month, 9 will release the latest in K7’s DJ-Kicks series of mix CDs, a journey from elasticated house and dancehall, through soul, funk and hip-hop, to overbearing dubstep and grime. Kode is one of the world’s best DJs – his extended sets at Plastic People last year are spoken of with pure reverence, and this year he’s let out specialist mixes in 2step and “sino-grime”. Here he contributes a mix of “mostly ’94-’96 jungle”, bound by an icy, misty quality. Lemon D, DJ SS, Undercover Agent and more feature.

Next week, Hyperdub, Plat du Jour and FACT will be presenting an off-Sonar party at Club Mondo, Thursday 17 June. Already on the bill are Darkstar, Cooly G, Ikonika, Guido, Mweslee and Kode9 himself, plus Plat du Jour residents. There’s also a ton of special guests – to find out who, you’ll have to attend.
