Robert Owens & Tone Control – Starting With Me (inc James Johnston remix)

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 22, 2012 by E.N.

Tone Control return with house music vocal legend, Robert Owens for a steppin’, bass led mantra for the dance floor. Tone Control bring in soulful house star, Sean McCabe on Moog, Rhodes and Organ to complete “Starting With Me”. Working the analogue delays, “Stuck On Loop” is a dark and serious dubbed out excursion. Glaswegian producer, James Johnston has been making big waves for vinyl loving, deep house heads recently – he turns in a heavy chorded, bumpin’ dub remix to complete this new single, the 12th release on Tone Control Music.

Tone Control are Marcus Harris and Simon Finnegan. The British production duo have been progressively releasing their own brand of electronic soul for over 6 years appealing to house music and leftfield DJ’s alike. Following the release of their critically acclaimed “Illusion” single, much lauded by Theo Parrish and Kerri Chandler, the duo have gone on to find wider appeal with their smash “Take Me Away” ft. Adeola Ranson and “Without Your Love” ft. James B. Coleman – remixed by DJ Spinna and played by DJs globally including ‘Lil Louis and Kenny Dope.

Robert Owens has played an instrumental part in defining House Music history. Robert was already DJing in Chicago when he met Larry Heard to form Fingers Inc. with Ron Wilson in 1985. Their output included “Bring Down the Walls”, and the monumental “Can You Feel It”. Robert’s subsequent solo releases, led to the classic “Tears” with Frankie Knuckles & Satoshi Tomiie in 1989. Worldwide chart success followed in the 90’s with “I’ll Be Your Friend”. Robert was cited as “The voice of house music” by Mixmag. Since then Robert has worked with an incredible list of influential artists including Photek, London Elektricity, Sandy Rivera, Coldcut, Quentin Harris, and recently Tevo Howard and Kai Alce to name a few. His recent LP’s for Compost Records demonstrate his continued inspiration and artistic longevity, maintaining his reputation as the man who breathed life and soul into House Music.

Prosumer presents ‘Panorama Bar 03′ on Ostgut Ton

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 9, 2011 by E.N.

Prosumer is no unknown quantity anymore. In 2005 he donated Playhouse a veritable hit with “The Craze” and led to the recognition that longing and lascivious house music with male vocals doesn’t necessarily have to come out of the holy trinity (Chicago, Detroit and New York) – although he would never deny his special love affair with these places and house. Prosumer’s music (be is as producer and remixer with Murat Tepeli, Tama Sumo or on his own) and his DJ sets breathe autonomy and individuality as well as preserving the basic ethos of the founding fathers. He follows the primal credo of disco’s deified bastard: to jack the groove of all grooves. Whatever that may be.

Here you have his first officially available mix. Concurrently a document of Prosumer’s symbiotic relationship with the already legendary club, ‘Panorama Bar 03’ wraps all the things up that make Prosumer such an exceptional DJ. Seemingly without any effort, he connects songs and tracks from yesterday, today and tomorrow. Tracks that follow the textbook example of house (DJ Duke’s tribute to Larry Heard) and tracks that need Prosumer’s touch to be identified as such (Lil Silva). Exclusive dubplates from his Panorama Bar fellow Steffi and Berlin’s hotshot Hunee meet well-placed and unreleased skyrockets from Soundstore, T.S.O.S. and Soundso. Theo Parrish jacks with the young and wild Morgan Geist, while secret matters from the Romanthony vaults (“The House Of God”) swing with a fantastic Jeff Mills in disguise (Servo Unique).

On top of it all, evergreens like the affirmative and uplifting “Music Take Me Up” by Mr. Fingers make you wonder why they haven’t got a place in house music’s pantheon. Another classic – at least for Prosumer and his beloved Panorama Bar shifts – is Oracy’s “Bass Mood” and I’s “L.T.B.C.Y.B.“ should certainly become one.
‘Panorama Bar 03’ is teeming with personal tracks that are perfectly in tune with each other and mixed without a false laptop bottom but much needed bravado instead. It just needs a little bit of stamina to create something worthwhile. Prosumer’s steadfastness has already turned him into one of the most interesting DJs of our time. To quote QX-1: a love injection!

Floating Points Ensemble – Post Suite / Almost In Profile (Ninja Tune, December 6th)

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on November 27, 2010 by E.N.

Ninja Tune are very proud to announce that the first record by the hotly tipped Floating Points Ensemble will be released by the label on december 6th. The double-A ten inch single features two tracks by the full Ensemble recorded and mixed at the legendary Abbey Road Studios for the Ninja Tune XX twentieth anniversary celebration.

Sam Shepherd aka Floating Points has been wowing th electronic music world since his self-released debut 7″ single came out early in 2009. Releasing predominantly on Eglo records (which he runs alongside Rinse Fm’s Alexander Nut) as well as Planet Mu and R2, Shepherd’s productions have earned him the support of such luminaries as Theo Parrish, Kyle Hall, Benji B, Ramadanman, Four Tet, Kode 9 and Mary Anne Hobbs. What’s less well known, perhaps, is that Shepherd is also classically trained, an aspect of his character which is allowed full rein when writing, composing and arranging for the Floating Points Ensemble. The 16 piece group led by Shepherd recently won last year’s ‘Best Maida Vale Session’ at Gilles Peterson’s ‘Worldwide Awards’ and this spring spent a week at Abbey Road recording the music contained on this release.

The results are sumptuous and soulful, Fatima Bramme Sey’s voice literally floating above massed strings, percussion and Shepherd’s interventions on Fender Rhodes. A beautiful suite of music which confirms Sam Shepherd’s role as a key player in modern British music.

When people talk about The New Detroit, it’s a safe bet that 18-year-old producer and DJ Kyle Hall is going to be a major part of the conversation. Born into a musical family, Hall grew up in the same Motor City neighborhood as techno legends like Robert Hood, Kelli Hand, and Anthony “Shake” Shakir, was later mentored by guys like Mike Huckaby, and now sits at the forefront of his hometown’s next generation. He’s already dropped releases on high-quality labels like FXHE and Hyperdub, and also helms his own imprint, Wild Oats. Not bad for a kid who’s not even old enough to drink yet. Fresh off some tour dates in Asia and prior to his latest European jaunt, we pinned Hall down long enough to put together an exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series. Combining masters of the craft with similarly fresh-faced new artists, the mix makes clear that with folks like Kyle Hall taking the reins, the future of Detroit is in good hands.
