The Hudson Branch release “Piggyback” as a free download/stream to celebrate the release of their new album “World Kid,” out today.

Recorded with John McEntire (Broken Social Scene, Tortoise) and produced by Neil Strauch(Andrew Bird, Iron & Wine, Anathallo), “World Kid” retains the nuanced complexity of the band’s debut album “Tightrope Walker” but sees The Hudson Branch (Cobey Bienert, Corey Bienert, Matt Boll, Jake Boll, Enoch Kim) embracing new territory. In addition to traditional instruments (guitar, bass, drums, piano), ukuleles, programmed beats, tambourines, shakers, glockenspiels, marimbas, a Wurlitzer, an organ, Casio synths, violins combine to create “World Kid’s” unique sonic texture.

In addition to digital format, “World Kid” is also being released as a multimedia physical songbook, featuring original illustrations for all album tracks by visual artist Rachel June, the short story “Work” by award winning radio producer Andy Mills (NPR, PRX, WBEZ), lyrics, exclusive photos from the making of “World Kid” and full album download code. The limited edition books will see an initial print run of 300 and are only available at the band’s live shows. They make their debut when The Hudson Branch headlines Chicago’s Lincoln Hall on May 8.

Field Day is ecstatic to reveal further names for what is shaping to be the most exhilarating music festival of the summer. After the sun drenched success of last year’s show, Field Day’s promoters vowed to up the musical ante yet again for this year’s event and the world’s most sonically adventurous artists have signed up to perform. Having already announced a plethora of artists including Wild Beasts, Tortoise, John Cale, Jamie XX, James Blake and Warpaint, the next wave are set to push musical limits to the boundaries

Villagers released one of the stand out albums of 2010 and they perform tracks from it at Field Day. Conor O’Brien’s enchanting melodies and darkly poetic lyrics are given greater intensity in the electric intimacy of his live performances and Villagers bring depth, sincerity and beauty in abundance to Victoria Park.

Field Day are thrilled to announce an exclusive performance from Detroit house music pioneer and dance music legend Carl Craig who as part of his 20 years of Planet E imprint will be performing a set of his 69 material live. This is a UK exclusive and the set is being performed in four cities worldwide this year. Expect sublime tracks like ‘Desire’, the frenetic ‘Jam The Box’ or the contents of 4 Jazz Funk Classics staged in front of a retina popping stage show.

One third of dub step super group, Magnetic Man, Benga is the toast of the genre is set to drop some shuddering, bass heavy gems on the east London massive alongside cohort Youngman. Field Day welcomes back Erol Alkan for a party set of energetic, trashy disco blended with electro beats, new romantic rhythms and the spirit of 70′s punk, 80′s rock and 90′s house.

Kieran Hebden (aka Four Tet) and James Holden have decided to unleash some serious sonic wizardry on Field Day by playing an exclusive back to back set. Kieran’s glorious, abstract sets incorporate elements of hip hop, electronica, techno, jazz and folk whilst James Holden’s adventurous, progressive electronic sounds have marked him out as the leading British techno sorcerer and psychadelic shamen. Expect much musical merriment.

Ultra hip Brooklyn duo Creep are garnering much acclaim at the moment having just released a single featuring guest vocals from the xx’s Romy Madley-Croft whilst there is a rare chance to get up close and personal with Vampire Weekend bassist Chris Baio, who will be performing one of his infamous DJ sets.

Warp Record’s Canadian indie kids Born Ruffians bring much uplifting exuberance whilst hotly tipped Cloud Control are recent winners of the Australian Music Prize, the antipodean equivalent of the Mercury Music Prize. Swedish band Junip boast Jose Gonzales amongst their number and make a welcome return to the live music scene after a five year hiatus and female duo 2:54 showcase their melancholic, sepia tinged desert rock

Field Day are delighted to announce a partnership with Australia’s most credible music festival Laneway. Field Day promoted a stage at Laneway in January 2011 and was keen to reciprocate by inviting Laneway to do the same in August.

Danny Rogers, co-promoter of the Laneway Festival says: “Field Day London and the St Jerome’s Laneway Festival have much in common and pride themselves on being leaders in presenting the highest calibre acts to their respective markets, often before they’ve broken. We are proud that we are committed to the same goals, ethos and ideals as such an awesome festival like Field Day and are ecstatic to be a part of something that is doing truly great things”

Field Day promoter Tom Baker comments, “I am super excited about Field Day now, the line up is so, so good I can’t really believe it. I don’t know what I am going to do on the day, there are just too many good acts to see and some exclusives like the Kieran Hebden back to back set with James Holden and Carl Craig presents 69 just can’t be missed”.

With more artists to be announced as well as details of the Village Mentality area Field Day raises the bar once again in its quest to bring you the very best in sonic entertainment.

SPECIAL BENNY
“TOYS”

Released 6th September 2010 through Proper Songs

Special Benny release their debut album “Toys” through the Proper Songs label on 6th September 2010. The six-piece band are Mat Baynton, Grace Cheung, Tom Corbett, Ben Gates, Rob Smoughton and Matt Turner who hail from Southend, Brighton, Bexleyheath and Hong Kong but now call London home. Most of Special Benny studied music, apart from Mat, who went to clown school. Although five members can distinguish between a Neapolitan 6th, and a French 6th, none can fall over quite so hilariously as Mr Baynton.

The tracks on “Toys” draw from a variety of musical influences. Although they admit their individual tastes differ greatly the band cites Tortoise, Jim O’Rourke, Sufjan Stevens, Battles, Frank Zappa and Steve Reich among their shared favourites.

As might be expected from a band who admire such experimental luminaries, there is a high degree of collaboration and planning involved in their song writing: “We finish all our ideas together, or the band as a whole aren’t interested. Democracy can be hard within a band, it can lead to arguments. But at the same time, the fact that we are always surprised when we play together is an absolute joy.”

Special Benny are not a band to rush things – their ultra-obsessive nature with microscopic detail of sound would send the most hardy of studio hermits around the bend – but even for them “Toys” has been a long time coming. Mat and Ben have been making music together since they were 14, before meeting other members around university and starting Special Benny (named seconds before playing their first gig, the name stuck ever since…). Despite building up a solid live following and self-recording/producing/releasing the “Rumblestrip EP” in 2006, the group struggled to find their natural rhythm and life began to interfere. original drummer Steve Galloway left, Matt Turner took a job in Australia for a year, Mat Baynton’s acting career took off, Ben and Grace started a family – the group even called time on Special Benny with a final gig at their spiritual home of The Fox in Lewisham, South East London.

Then in late 2008, they discussed playing seriously again with their friend and drummer Rob Smoughton (who releases as Grovesnor on Lo Recordings and is live drummer for Hot Chip). The resulting rehearsals inspired the group into resuming with renewed focus, leading to the completion of “Toys”.

The release of “Toys” is a testament to their desire and need to create music together, and to do so on their own terms as a group. It is the sound of people discovering common ground despite their differences and disruptions and creating music that’s beautiful, precious, timeless and entirely their own.

1. Air Filter
2. Drums & Phase
3. Rumblestrip
4. “Well done, Josef!”
