Baio (Vampire Weekend/Greco-Roman) – Sunburn Modern video

Posted in News with tags , , , , , on June 22, 2012 by E.N.

Vampire Weekend’s Baio recently released his debut solo EP, Sunburn, on Greco-Roman. Three tracks of tropical electronica inspired by a trip to Mexico and a nasty case of modern art-shaped sunburn.

EP opener Sunburn Modern’s sound is that of clattering balkan rhythms, pitched-up euphoric vocals, lush, rising melotron chords and 8-bit inspired melodies, the perfect soundtrack to a strange and ethereal summer night. Middle track “Anonymity 1″ is melancholy leads and ecstatic house-piano, rolling percussion and polyrhythmic blips that wouldn’t sound out of place next to the music of Spaniards John Talabot and Delorean. Closer “Tanto” is a sample-based take on steel drum house and features underground Chilean popstar Matias Aguayo on vocals.

Now, as we celebrate the summer Solstice, Baio is pleased to share with you the video for single “Sunburn Modern”, directed by Aramique:

PUNCHES – Feeling Right by punchesbk
PUNCHES is the Brooklyn based late night disco project of twin brothers Greg and Darin Bresnitz-who can be found tearing it up as DJ duo Finger on the Pulse-andnightlife pioneer Alan Astor, who got crowds up and dancing with his 2005 solo hit “Fantastic Fantasy.” PUNCHES’ synth littered, airy beats are rooted firmly in the soul filled space between disco and electro. “Feeling Right,” the debut single off their Sleepless City EP, features Astor’s warm, classic-sounding vocals and reveals PUNCHES as a club-ready band that can make it through ’til morning, when you come to in the light of day and reflect on the night you’ve just had. The release of PUNCHES’ Sleepless City EP also marks the inaugural release of Travis Hayden’s (IHEARTCOMIX, Big Beat) newest label, Our Label.

After making a name for themselves both as Finger on the Pulse and with their popular IFC original series Dinner with the Band, the Bresnitz twins found themselves in need of an opening act for one of their many parties. The duo called up Astor, who they had admired since the release of his album “Everything Is Possible” and the rest is history. After that fateful party, the three spent many late nights bonding over a shared love of the city and all it’s nightlife pleasures until one chilly night last December, while driving through a deserted midnight in Brooklyn, PUNCHES was born.

During the winter months, the trio were looking for a way to stay warm and to heat up the city’s dance floors by spinning their records in clubs across the boroughs. They found early success with their first mixtape, Somebody Has to Help You, and first remix, Au Revoir Simone’s “Only You Can Make You Happy.” Almost instantly, the remix went to #4 on Hype Machine, and led to a three week European tour. As time went on the project continued to heat up and this summer they began sharing the stage with such noteworthy artists as Cut Copy, Vampire Weekend, Dam Funk, Nancy Whang (LCD Soundsystem) and Die Antwoord while performing at JELLY Pool Parties and Converse’s 3 Artists 1 Song event in New York featuring Kid Cudi.

Influenced by the sounds of New York’s most famous dance clubs from Danceteria to Studio B, PUNCHES make fun and engaging music that takes full advantage of Astor’s rich, soulful voice. Anyone who has stayed up just a little too late in NYC (or Chicago or Paris or Tokyo) will recognize the heartbeat of songs like “Feeling Right”-a sparkly, smooth, up-tempo ode to the time of night right when you find your partner for the evening and revel in the moment, together, that place you could stay forever.
