The rapidly evolving scene that’s happening out in Russia allows for the kind of collaboration between artists of highly different fields, as is the case here. Arram Mantana, Tripmastaz and Roustam are three producers of different ilk, who have joined in this Special Case for their debut EP out soon on Souvenir Records.

The A-side somehow manages to retain a melodic, minimal house sensibility that is then thrown into hyperdrive by a looping ragga sample. This one’s useful either for after-hours hypnosis with its bass wobble, or pitched up, peak time apocalypse. ‘Bollyhood’ is the kind of confused tech-house whose faint vocal whisperings are always the most effective earworms the day after.

The B-side is no slouch, the shimmering keys of ‘Psy-Baba’ reminiscent of something out of ‘I Dream of Jeannie’ playing off against an oscillating beat until the familiar vocal sample drifts in. It’s fitting enough, with the groove ripping along to a squelchy, acid bassline and gurgling synths washing over it all.
