Quiet Village – Remixed with love by Maxxi & Zeus

Since their highly anticipated and widely acclaimed 2008 debut album ´Silent Movie´, Quiet Village, aka Matt Edwards and Joel Martin have been exploring other music avenues under their Maxxi & Zeus moniker. Now they are back, with ´Too High To Move´ a compilation of their most inspiring and sought after remixes to date, stitched together with love.

Quiet Village are the infamous duo comprising of Matt Edwards AKA Radio Slave and Joel Martin. Their debut album on !K7 caught the attention of the likes of Q, NME and Vice magazine for its Balearic style spiked with reggae, Motown and slow funk. A strange concoction though it sounded it won them high profile performances at Sonar by Day, Barcelona, Glastonbury and the Big Chill festival in the UK and as far as Hong Kong and quickly gained wide from extreme ends of music listening tastes.

Then they disappeared and regrouped as Maxxi & Zeus, releasing obscure and highly treasured cuts on seminal label International Feel. Now it’s time for the original whimsical musical outlet to reignite and blaze on Rekids subsidiary, Pyramid Of Mars. It’s almost like a rebirth but not quite, its Quiet Village back to life, perhaps better than before.

Sounding like a soundtrack to Easy Rider or some vintage flick you develop an unhealthy obsession with, ‘Too High To Move’ takes its title from a track from the original album but is in fact a collection of their best and most sought after remixes. Its obscure and tasteful selection is one that shows revered taste only an extended period of serious record collecting could adhere to.

The movie itself takes a number of twists and turns of action and suspense until the closing moments from Black Devil Disco Club. Long infusions, gentle repetitions and subtle shifts from the jungle to the seaside linger long enough to shine light into the murky waters of the duo’s mind. Their adventures begin with a cruising speed of around 50mph taking in krautrock cult heroes Allez Allez and the spellbinding enigma, Muddbefore pushing the foot down for some raw 4/4 heroes in the form of Francois K and Mark E. Featuring cameos from Grandad Bob and Rekids’ own lovechild Toby Tobias and Bubble Club, the Quiet Village version shoots a cult classic with surround sound and HD quality experience.

Quiet Village reappear as the genreless state reemerges and begins to fill up a sea of writhing creatures melting within the current pot. As hypnotic as the rotation of a disco ball, this is pretty body-conscious stuff. Quiet Village sounds like the name of a place glimpsed in a film, or perhaps a dream largely due to the duo’s addiction to archiving. Both self-confessed record nerds that are intent upon forging a shimmering totality from their sagging shelves of vinyl.

The group consists of Joel Martin, a longtime record collector, curator, DJ and music supervisor, and Matt Edwards, best known as Radio Slave an acclaimed producer of high-octane house and techno, tapped for remixes by the likes of X-Press 2, Tiga, Kylie, Hell, Booka Shade, Moby, Trentemøller and more. The two met in the early ’90s in the town of Catford, England, southeast of London, where they bonded over a shared love of old disco, acid house and carboot sales. Their music is inspired by classic soundtracks, vintage TV adverts and long-forgotten BBC programs, triggering an emotional response so deep-seated it’s practically subliminal. They’ve since done remixes for the likes of Gorillaz, François K, and Cosmo Vitelli and ‘Too High To Move’ is a testament to their skill in the process.

Released on the new Pyramid Of Mars label, a new subsidiary of Rekids that will focus on more experimental and leftfield projects including forthcoming projects from Quiet Village, Vince Watson, The Machine v´s Joe Clausell and A&Red by Matt Edwards.

Those of you who remember Psycatron’s stunning remix of Mutant Clan’s ‘Persuader’ from John Digweed’s first ‘Structures’ album, or the brilliant ‘Vertigo In The Modern’ (Beddigi08) with Sian, will no doubt be chomping at the bit to get your ears around this brand new single. This is HOT!!!!!
Psycatron, aka Northern Irish duo Paul Hamill & Dave Oost Lievense, produce 21st century techno with tracks that combine relentless energy and groove with bundles of emotion and tension, to make for an all-encompassing sound that is perfect for those big arenas and club rooms. Their Original Mix with its energetic, melodic, percussive groove backbone mounted on a deep, throbbing bassline, builds a drawn out brooding vibe towards an ecstatic mid-way climax before layering and building in pure, intense Psycatron style.
‘Memories Of The Moment’ has been the biggest track of the summer for Psycatron in their live sets, so you may have heard it already at the I Love Techno Festival, Global Gathering, Klubbers Day Madrid, Fabric, Berghain, Oxygen Ireland, Astrolopolis France, Baracca Valencia, The Loft Barcelona, or on their multiple dates on the Planet E 20th World Tour.
Between them, John Digweed and Nick Muir, producers of the finest electronic dance music, have been involved in many pivotal moments in the world of club music over the years and have in many ways helped to define genres & push the boundaries further. As with all their studio productions their remix of ‘Memories Of The Moment’ is another mission statement to show that they are not resting on past laurels but always developing their sound in an exciting direction. It’s a spine-tingling, fizzing, spiralling, anthemic monster that will be huge worldwide.
Remixes for Spooky, Simian Mobile Disco and Vince Watson have all been Psycatron highlights already this year, and a single with Paul Woolford for HotFlush received critical acclaim. New singles are on the way alongside Sian and Detroit Grand Pubahs, whilst the boys are currently locked down in their studio, working on the first Psycatron long-player for release in 2012. In the meantime you can tune into their fortnightly Electric Avenue radio show on Proton, which already has 20k subscribers.

“When I started ALOLA back in 1993 with £500 I’d borrowed from my dad, it was an outlet to release my own music and slowly, music by like-minded artists whom I admired… After 17 years it’s time for the past, present and future to fall in sync.” Omid 16B Nourizadeh
The idea is that the ALOLA back catalogue will be slowly introduced to the digital world through 2011, along with new material. It would be pointless to just throw it all out at once; this is music to be savoured; in a disposable world this is music to be treasured for a long, long time.
Omid’s desire to present so much music in a coherent way has led to the decision to release a series of mix compilations, combining forgotten back catalogue classics with unreleased material by ALOLA artists to add something fresh to the whole concept.
“I’ve approached some of my favourite DJs who have had some affiliation with the label and some who were part of the label to mix a variety of comps with me through 2011. Who better could I want to do the first one with than Demi? He did his mix unintentionally when I gave him all the old ALOLA vinyl a while back, which made me realise again how much music had gone through my ALOLA heart! He’s put a mix together what showcases some of the moments in the label’s history when things couldn’t go unnoticed, even if you tried; the pure elements of house music through to jazz and electronic bliss.” Omid 16B
“As the late, great Jimi Hendrix once said, ‘our music is like a jar of candy, everything’s all mixed up!’ And to substantiate that wonderful anecdote with one of my own that I adhere to, ‘expect to be given what you want, not necessarily what you expect’, founded on two words that encapsulate this school of thought: Relevance and Significance. The past is the future of the present and the relevance and significance of the re-launch of ALOLA quite simply ticks all the boxes that need be. This is my debut solo mix for an official release and I would happily leave it to be my last, because if ever I wanted to encompass all that I represent as a DJ, then what I present to you here is my blueprint. From the bottom of my heart, I thank Omid, whose labour of love is a continued source of inspiration to myself and to many who choose to follow their dreams. Omid admits that being totally blown away by Demi’s mix meant he had reservations about doing one himself, so decided to do one that showcases mostly his own material that’s set for release in the future on ALOLA, allowing the past, present and future to fall in sync.

John Digweed’s Bedrock label continues its inexorable rise with yet another stunning release to follow big tunes by King Unique, Cristian Varela and Quivver. This next release showcases some great uplifting techno from one of Ireland’s fastest rising stars, Ian O’Donovan.

“Aurora Borealis” is a massive track, which is already getting big plays from Laurent Garnier, but “Horizons” and “Indigo Eyes” are also very exciting productions from this very talented young man, that shouldn’t be ignored.

After spending much of his youth listening to various styles of music, Ian came across the world of underground electronic music. It was so refreshing and different to all the formatted songs and “cheesy” dance tracks of the time, he quickly began to immerse himself in this music and the scene itself. Influenced by artists such as Steve Rachmad, Underground Resistance, Technasia and DJs like Laurent Garnier, Jeff Mills and DJ Hell, Ian began DJing and seeking out the records that would go on to play an important part in defining his sound.

It wasn’t until he moved to Australia in 2005, that he began to create his own tracks, slowly teaching himself and developing his sound. After nearly four years living in Oz, Ian decided to return to Ireland in 2009 and focus more of his attention on making music, determined to help break the cycle of the boring, soulless “minimal” fad that had dominated house and techno in previous years.

With early support on many of his tracks from the likes of Laurent Garnier, John Digweed, Dave Clarke, Anderson Noise, Hernan Cattaneo, Psycatron and more, the future looks bright for Ian with hot releases on Hype Muzik as well as John Digweed’s Bedrock Records.
