SQUAREPUSHER RELEASES “KCRW SESSION” LIVE EP
AVAILABLE FOR A LIMITED TIME ONLY
UFABULUM NORTH AMERICAN TOUR DATES
In celebration of his forthcoming headline North American, UK and Japanese shows, Squarepusher has released a surprise new live EP, “KCRW Session”. This excellent live session was recorded for KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic and features 5 live reworks (some un-aired) from Squarepusher’s stellar 2012 release, Ufabulum.
The digital-only EP will only be available for a limited time coinciding with the run of live shows. You can get it right now exclusively at Bleep ahead of its wider digital release on the November 13th here:
“The whole session was recorded in a single take with no edits and is in keeping with the way I was performing the material in the live shows at the time. I wanted to introduce more disorder and mayhem to these pieces, and to move away from the more strictly controlled sound of the album.” - Squarepusher
Heralded for his dazzling, high-octane live shows, Squarepusher’s Ufabulum tour is an intense sensory experience of light and sound. Starting off his tour at Moog Fest he will then be joined on the road by Mount Kimbie, hitting cities on the east coast, some of which he hasn’t played in close to a decade.
LUX is Brian Eno’s first solo album on Warp Records and his first solo album since 2005’s Another Day On Earth. It finds him expanding upon the types of themes and sonic textures that were present on such classic albums as Music For Films, Music For Airports and Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks. Eno sees it as a continuation of his ‘Music for Thinking’ project that includes Discreet Music (1975) and Neroli (1993).
LUX is one of Eno’s most ambitious works to date; it is a 76 minute composition in twelve sections that evolved from a work currently housed in the Great Gallery of the Palace of Venaria in Turin, Italy. The album is Eno’s third for Warp, following Small Craft on a Milk Sea (with Jon Hopkins and Leo Abrahams) and Drums Between The Bells (with Rick Holland).
Grizzly Bear revealed their new single, “Yet Again”, on Radio 1 last night, with the track featured as Huw Stephens’ ‘Hottest Record in the World’. The band will also perform the song, which comes from their new album ‘Shields’ (out Sept 17th on Warp Records), on leading US satirical show The Colbert Report this month as part of the recently-announced StePhest Colbchella RocktAugustfest, which takes place aboard the USS Intrepid.
Recorded over the better part of a year, ‘Shields’ represents the band’s most charged and concise collection of music to date and follows 2009’s critical and commercial breakthrough, ‘Veckatimest.’ They headline End of the Road festival in Dorset on Sept 1st, and later kick off an international tour on September 16th, including their biggest UK headline show to date at Brixton Academy on October 22nd. Filterwolf releases the first single from his upcoming third album ‘Viva La Rave’, entitled ‘Brooklyn Via Montmartre‘. This single is intervowen with three state-of-the-art remixes from Jimmy Edgar (Warp, Hotflush), Altered Natives (Hyperdub, 3024) and Eduardo D’Alirio (International DJ Gigolos,Filigran).
The original track is nothing short of future house anthem with an elegant and catchy piano melody reminiscent of Detroit hit ‘Strings Of Life’, finest jazz percussions and vocoder action, which all serve to catapult this track into the new sonic spheres. Jimmy Edgar, a wayward star producer from Detroit, now residing in Berlin, brings his new found club-oriented futuristic sleaze into his rework of the track, making it a giant dancefloor burner guaranteed to clock in over 10 minutes. Altered Natives, a celebrated producer from London, whose last album was on many top ten lists of 2011, makes a rough and tumble remix, with grimy sub basses and incredible intensity in his original interpratation of the UK Funky style.
And finally, Eduardo D’Alirio adds new sophisticated layers and playful details layered on top of the original track, making it a perfect summer manifesto.
This summer sees the debut collaborative release from Hudson Mohawke and Lunice, two of the hottest young producers out there right now. Their TNGHT project is coming out as a five track EP on vinyl and digitally July 24th via Warp Records/LuckyMe.
Those familiar with the genre-blending, ground-quaking beats of Glasgow’s Hudson Mohawke and Montreal’s Lunice will think they know what is in store from a collaboration between the two, but nothing could prepare for the future hip hop production featured on TNGHT.
The duo debuted their collab at this year’s SXSW. With thousands of acts it is virtually impossible to stand out, especially for an act that has never released a track or played a show, but TNGHT packed out the venue, and the entire room shook from excitement (and bass!). My Best Fiend Announce debut album In Ghostlike Fading February 21, 2012 on Warp Records
Ethereal 5-piece My Best Fiend announce debut album In Ghostlike Fading. The brooklynites’ debut is full of soaring guitars, crackling vocals and beautifully intense lyrics. All of which are able to be experienced live for New Yorkers on January 27th at Glasslands with The Hundred in the Hands.
“…a dark, dramatic local outfit that comes off like a less-cryptic Sonic Youth” - Time Out New York
Listen to lead track “Cracking Eggs”
While the five members of My Best Fiend live in Brooklyn, the music they create resides somewhere else entirely: in a spacious, dreamlike world all its own. The seven tracks on debut album In Ghostlike Fading feel like reveries, mixing gorgeously atmospheric keyboards with grittier guitars and plaintive lead vocals. On hallucinatory opening track, “Higher Palms,” My Best Fiend achieves a kind of modern, Phil Spector-like spirit, a somewhat woozier Wall of Sound. Lead singer Fred Coldwell’s lyrics weave between decadence and penitence, compulsion and confession. A song that Blurt Magazine says is “…easily our favorite new song…”
My Best Fiend borrows its name from a 1999 documentary that filmmaker Werner Herzog made about his friend, collaborator and occasional nemesis, the late actor Klaus Kinski. It’s a loaded phrase, suggestive of the tightrope balance of emotions, the love and lunacy, required in both art and life – and, besides, it sounds pretty damn cool. The group originated as a duo, with Kris Lindblade, a Kansas native, on Rhodes piano and Coldwell, who hails from Philadelphia, on guitar and vocals. They ultimately grew to a be a five-piece band enlisting the drumming duties of Joseph Noll, keyboardist Paul Jenkins and, most recently, bassist Damian Genuardi, a childhood buddy of Coldwell’s and a veteran of hardcore band The Explosion.
Though Coldwell supplies the lyrics, the evocative approach of My Best Fiend is the result of a genuine group effort. The material first took shape in the band’s Bushwick rehearsal space. It’s not the setting but it’s the close and constant interaction of the players that dictates the sound. “It was intense making this record,” Coldwell recalls. “It was an emotional time for everyone involved. The process of trying to articulate something that is so complex and important to you in a clear way, from getting the tempo right to finding the perfect aural palette, was pretty heavy”.
My Best Fiend’s hypnotic melodies has garnered comparisons to Spiritualized, and the enveloping wall of sound of Jesus and Mary Chain, even hinting at the sonic build and climax of Explosions in the Sky.In Ghostlike Fading has a loose, impressionistic narrative flow – an undercurrent, really – that develops over the course of its nine tracks, culminating in the seven-minute-plus final track, “On the Shores of the Infinite,” where one can finally, absolutely, glimpse some light at the end of the tunnel.
Integrated into the framework of In Ghostlike Fading, highly personal words become utterly universal sentiments. As Coldwell concludes, “It’s a kindred spirit vibe, a way of not feeling so alone, of keeping some of your ghosts alive.”
