Bodytonic Live 17: DJ T

With ‘The Inner Jukebox’ – his second artist album – hot off the press, DJ T has changed focus: the funk sound that influenced his debut album has been replaced by sounds from a different decade. But while mid-90s house is the order of the day on the new release, his influences run deeper. In a special Bodytonic podcast, Thomas Koch selects 10 tracks that never leave his jukebox. …read more

Label of the month: Wireblock

Be it techno, electro, dubstep, house or UK funky, Glasgow’s Wireblock have got it all after just three years in the game. RA’s Richard Carnes tracked down the trio behind the label’s diverse and consistent output to discover more.

Despite their short history, Wireblock have already established themselves as a go-to imprint for lovers of idiosyncratic and forward thinking club tracks; a label with a wide remit and high quality control. Wireblock founders Jack Revill (AKA Jackmaster), and brothers Neil (AKA Nelson) and Calum Morton (AKA Spencer) all have professional jobs in vinyl distribution, web and graphic design and music marketing respectively, so it’s no surprise that everything about their label seems so clinical.

They’ve certainly come a long way from their teenage beginnings listening to “cheesy, Ibiza style house.” It was one album in particular that nudged them in the right direction when they started to get serious about buying vinyl: Daft Punk’s Homework. “Me and Calum went to school together and he taught me how to DJ in his house one day on a pair of old battered out Gemini decks and a Numark mixer,” Revill explains. “That album was basically the one that we were playing when we first got our turntables,” Calum adds. “All the Roule records and connected labels, and all that French stuff.” …read more

Heyoka – Gate Code Promo Mix June 09

Posted in Dub, Glitch, IDM on June 30, 2009 by E.N.

Heyoka – Gate Code Promo Mix June 09 (right click save as)

One of Muti Music hottest new artists makes his mark again after a very successful debut year in 2008, this time with an album of his signature sounds of dubbed out, glitchy bass tracks and instrumental Hip Hop.

Mostly composed while on a trip to Uruguay in Jan 2009 Heyoka has delivered a trippy , dubbed out sets of tracks that show homage to oldschool dub while playing with modern glitch effects and instrumental hip hop, the result is a listen that could find your mind drifting into unfamiliar spaces that may surprise many.

Heyoka became one of the west coasts most sought after artists last year, which has led to more international engagements in 2009, with festival bookings in Australia and Canada in addition to maintaining a hectic US touring schedule. His early influences in Downtempo, Dub and IDM combined with more recent mid-tempo dancefloor genres have helped create a very unique sound that combines relentless basslines, hip hop and dub rhythms with a lot of musicality and melody.

The continual evolution of Heyoka’s productions and his ability to continue to sound uniquely ‘Heyoka’ is evidence that the road for this young producer is going to be a long and prosperous one.

Spiral Beach- The Only Really Thing+Domino 4 free

Posted in Promotions on June 29, 2009 by E.N.

Spiral Beach The Only Really Thing
(Sparks Music/Tommy Boy, September 22)

Download the track “Domino” from the forthcoming album here.

Also, watch an acoustic performance showcasing the bands spellbinding 3 way harmonies here.

Spiral Beach are sonic rebels unafraid of breaking all the rules and throwing a party in the process! The band’s love of exploring different sounds and song structures is offset by their sophisticated sense of melody and elaborate vocal harmonies. They have also re-imagined the format of a concert, making their shows epic blowouts that last until dawn and the band dances and even cooks with the audience! Playing in uncommon venues such as art galleries, community halls, and circus spaces, the group has created a rare interactive live show that has fans and critics itching for more.

Following the enormous success of their album Ball in their home country Canada, Spiral Beach will be releasing their sophomore effort The Only Really Thing this fall. The energetic new album kicks off with the dynamic “Battery,” a postmodern pop/rock anthem that fuses the raw alternative flair of Blondie with a psychedelic beach party. Other standout tracks such as “Domino,” a kaleidoscopic duet of percussion and piano, ensure that you keep your dancing shoes on until the early hours of the morning, while “Shake The Chain” uses a metal chain as its primary instrument to create a gorgeous and richly layered ballad.

Spiral Beach is constantly pushing the boundaries of contemporary music. From their vintage inspired new-wave sound to their unforgettable live shows, they have already conquered their native Canada by playing numerous festivals (including Toronto’s Virgin Festival) and have been praised by outlets such as Much Music and Toronto’s The Edge. With The Only Really Thing, this daring and exhilarating band’s appeal is ready to take over new territory.

If You’re In NYC, Don’t Miss Spiral Beach at Piano’s on July 15 @ 8 PM!

Tectonic 029: 2562 ‘Love In Outer Space’/Third Wave

Posted in News, Promotions on June 29, 2009 by E.N.

New on Tectonic: 2562 ‘Love In Outer Space’

‘Love In Outer Space’ and ‘Third Wave’ mark a significant return by 2562 to Tectonic with the first plate to touch down since his highly aclaimed ‘Aerial’ LP, released last year. ‘Aerial’ was charted heavily in multiple end of year ‘Best Of 2008′ charts as 2562′s exceptional balance of deep hypnotic soundscapes, space funk bouncing grooves and soundsystem crushing basslines caught the attention of Djs, producers, reviewers and ravers alike. 2562 is back with some brand spanking new transmissions showing he is able to flip the script and maintain a sense of pioneering force with what amounts to possibly his biggest ever release yet…
‘Love In Outer Space’ is a woozy intergalactic machine funk trip – the way the rhythm of the 808 beat falls over itself sounds like it generates some kind of perpetuated motion like a moon buggy with square wheels. In comes a laser like stab – almost arpegiated – adding to the disorientation of the beats and bass, before an alien sounding chord sequence punches through, bringing the whole composition together. It’s as groundbreaking and confusing as 2001: A Space Oddessy and marks a distinctive shift in sound and style of 2562′s more techno based productions of last year. Big support from Kode 9 and many more.
‘Third Wave’ is a more accessible 4/4 roller but is no less rewarding for it. Having torn up dancefloors worldwide in the hands of everyone from Martyn, Appleblim, Peverelist and many others, this energising rhythm, painted with colourful sonics and emotive chord changes sounds like Herbie Hancock hitting up a dubstep fix! As featured on the Tectonic Plates Vol 2 Pinch mix (along with ‘Love In Outer Space’), ‘Third Wave’ makes for a healthy slice of high quality foot shuffling genius!
