FACT Mix 105 – Dinky

Posted in Dj Mix, Fact, House, Podcast, Tech House, Techno on November 30, 2009 by J.D.

FACT Mix 105 is by Alejandra Iglesias, who you know as Dinky.

Now based in Berlin, the Chilean producer has been pushing her own dreamy, experimental house and techno sound since the beginning of the decade, when she arrived in New York to study dance and became enamoured with the city’s club scene.

After a string acclaimed 12″s on Traum she released her debut album, Black Cabaret, in 2002, but it was with 2005’s Cocoon single ‘Acid In My Fridge’ that the world really began to take notice. Since then, she’s become a dynamic and unpredictable force in electronic dance music, putting out heady material on Vakant, Crosstown Rebels and her own Horizontal imprint, most notable 2007’s terrific Ringing EP.

This month sees the release of her third studio album, Anemik, hot on the heels of last year’s May Be Later. It’s her debut on Vancouver’s Wagon Repair label, and her most potent offering yet – all swinging rhythms, dizzying psychedelic textures and an undertow of melancholy that stays with you long after you’ve finished listening.

FACT Mix 105 displays all the flair, emotional range and dancefloor nous that has made Dinky a force to be reckoned with. It’s a very celebratory-sounding session, with a bias towards skippy US house and stripped-back continental techno but with some terrific curveballs from Arthur Russell, Martyn and more. It’s undoubtedly one of the best house-leaning mixes we’ve ever had the pleasure of hosting, so please dig in and enjoy.

*Introducing new Dubstep Label Known Cold Records

Posted in *Introducing, Dub Step on November 29, 2009 by J.D.

Artist: AEon
EP: Bass Culture
Label: Known Cold Records
Cat: KCR-001
Released: November ‘09

Aeon is incredible. This is his debut EP called “Blury Mind”. His beats are driving, his bass lines are mature and his style is unique. A collection of surreal skeletal melodies with dark atmospheres. Experimental palettes of emotional synth work and deep pulsing dub techno with “experimental/intricate structures and arrangements.” Minimal drums and a huge pumping sub basses complete this forward thinking producer’s vision of visceral dubstep.

Aeon is Robert Galac from Slavonski Brod in Croatia. He is a 25 year old producer and event organizer also with a single released on the music label Twenty Twelve recordings. His sound has been described as “deep bass, tech house dubstep with influences from artists like Martyn, Skream and Karizma” Each of his productions is well organized and thought out composure’s of the highest quality. His tracks have been included on the Komon Knowledge Mix from Knowledge Magazine.

The Blury Mind EP was mastered by Bob Macc at Subvert Mastering. As well as receiving support from Knowledge Magazine and Dubkraft Records, the EP is getting radio support from SubFM, DubstepFM, CybaFM and many more.

“The music is incredible, I’d love to get (those) tracks.” DJ Liondub, LionDub International imprint.

“It has to be said that this is an *excellent* EP, It’s simply a well-rounded, well-balanced release. There’s proper stoned head nodding groove on (the Blury Mind EP), tracks like Metroplex have fairly experimental/intricate structures and arrangements. And yet they are still consistent. Center is a baaaaad groove. Top stuff!”

Bearcraft – Dark Night

Out 30th November 2009 on Digital Download

1. Dark Night (Radio Version)
2. Dark Night (Krucy Darkstar Remix)
3. Dark Night (Special 12” Disco Version)

“Dark Night” is the bittersweet follow-up to Bearcraft’s crossover debut favourite “The Werewolf” which gained support from the likes of Steve Lamacq, Larry Tee, Chris Coco, Annie Nightingale, Tronik Youth, and many others.
Rising wunderkind Krucy Darkstar makes his debut with his stunning remix of “Dark Night” – retaining the dark emotive feel of the original and twisting it into a dancefloor destroyer.
Again, a special 12″ disco version is also provided, taking the original and subtley turning its gorgeous synths, moving bass, and haunting vocal harmonies into an elongated dubby disco masterpiece.
It’s twilight in the woods, where nature and the imagination run wild and unbridled. This is the domain of Bearcraft.
Dicky Moore has already held great company in the international music scene after touring the UK, north America and Japan with Scritti Politti, as well as performing with that band at the 2006 Mercury Music Prize ceremony.
Bearcraft’s debut album is a fantastical, mathematical combination of electro uppers and bewitching acoustic slow-burners spinning folk yarns with an abundance of haunting melodies and the loveliest harmonies.
The album’s songs take in reference points as various as clairvoyance, altered states, barn owls, werewolves, castles, empty barns and retro physics theories
Bearcraft is performing live dates throughout 2010 – to keep up with the latest news check out

Will Holland aka Quantic is one the most prolific and innovative working producers today. In 2007 Quantic moved to Cali, Colombia where he has been digging for lost unknown treasures of cumbia, salsa and latin funk. This t-shirt collaboration with Quantic entitled “Streams of New Music from Old Sources” includes a mix cd full which is the work of networking and digging on the front lines of Cali Colombia and what came together is nothing short of breathtaking. It is a mix of cumbia funk, African inspired salsa, and Colombian vocal tracks that put you front in center of Latin American musical history.

James Amato’s business-savvy approach to the music industry has kept him balancing roles of promoter, record label owner, DJ and producer for more than a decade. From hosting his first one-off event in 1999 to securing his position as Director of Music and Bookings at Chicago’s historically influential SmartBar since 2006, James has become one of the most widely recognized names on the national & electronic music scene. Most recently, James has established his industry presence further, launching his widely successful fidget/electo/tech house label, Potty Mouth Music, which has earned him notoriety worldwide.

James launched his music career in his native city of Milwaukee, Wis., where he climbed through the promotional ranks of the local and Midwest rave scene in the 1990s. After working at pioneering electronic music venues—including Revolutions Records and Bassment with promoter and mentor Steven Kaye—he landed the position of Saturday Night Music Director and resident DJ at Milwaukee’s Pure nightclub. At the time, Pure stood as the city’s premiere underground music venue, boasting a six-figure sound system and sprawling capacity.

In 2004, James invested back into the industry by becoming co-owner and director of music and bookings at Milwaukee’s Mantra Lounge. Here he launched Kamasutra, a legendary Friday event that ran for three successful years. Kamasutra would go on to host an unprecedented line-up of electronic music talent the city had never seen before, or has ever seen since. As the night’s promoter, James booked a versatile roster of underground artist that defied genre boarders. The consistent success of Kamasutra put the city’s club scene on the national radar, as it garnered press attention from publications including URB and earned James a front-page cover story in Nightclub/Bar Magazine. His success also earned him runner-up for the “Best Promoter” in the U.S. by URB magazine, along with several pictorial Kamasutra spreads throughout 2005. Locally, James earned several press accolades, including “Best Club DJ” in Milwaukee’s 2005 Shepherd Express readers’ poll.

In September 2006, James relocated to Chicago to become the new Director of Music and Bookings at Chicago’s SmartBar, a historic venue with a 25-year tradition of showcasing electronic talent. Under the guidance of owner Joe Shanahan James continues broaden his scope as a promoter and bookings director, debuting innovative artists to Chicago, including Switch, Alan Braxe, Digitalism, Para One, Boys Noize, Erol Alkan and Claude Vonstroke.

In 2008, Club Systems International recognized his efforts to diversify and promote Chicago’s electronic music scene by selecting him as one of its “Next 10 Exciting Up-and-Comers” as part of its annual VIP Edition—“Nightlife’s 30 Most Influential People.” Additionally, James has received critical Chicago fanfare in 2007, when he was named part of NewCity magazine’s “45—45 Most Influential People That Rock Chicago!”

James’ promotional rise on the underground electronic scene led to his creation of two widely success digital/vinyl labels, including his 2007 venture, Potty Mouth Music, which showcases a diverse roster of fidget and tech house producers. With artists including: Santiago & Bushido, Crookers, HiJack, DJ Fame, The Bulgarian, and HeavyFeet, Potty Mouth Music has established itself as an innovative label embracing the newer dirty-quirky union of electro, house and techno. The label earned further notoriety in 2008, when label members Santiago & Bushido claimed the number-one downloaded track spot for their Potty Mouth single, “Head Trick,” claiming the spot for three consecutive weeks on The digital download site is the second most-trafficked music internet site in the world.

Recently in October of 2009, James relocated to Los Angeles and continues to push the industry envelope in balancing his career as a promoter and label-owner. His dedication in the studio and in the club continues to the industry standard of the international electronic music scene.
