ANDRES – Andres II

Rounding up the last three years worth of vinyl only releases, ‘Andres II’ collects some of the primest house, disco, hiphop and latin soul to come from Detroit in recent years. Because it’s Black Mahagani, the quality is guaranteed to reliable levels, but that’s selling this album short as Andrés has produced one of the most enjoyable long players to come out of that city since Moodymann’s classic ‘Black Mahogani’ or even Dilla’s ‘Donuts’. His biggest strength has to be his versatility, applying the same deft touch to any style he picks, at once showing the common soul roots of each style, but accomplishing each within its own parameters with nearly as much skill as Dilla or KDJ respectively. In fact, the simplest way we could describe this 30 track set would be as the perfect meeting point between the two 313 auteurs, mixing downbeat bombs like ‘Wish You Were Here’ with brief Dilla-esque skits like ‘Sha’s Revenge’ (sampling the A Number Of Names blueprint), and scorching uptempo disco edits like ‘Body And Soul’. Besides this you’ll find neon red boogie on ‘Skate Palooza, Detroit USA’, sensuous Latin affairs on ‘After The Drumming’ and more than enough to keep even the hardest-to-please house-head very happy indeed. If you’ve been feeling Trus’me, Dâm-Funk or Floating Points this year, this should exceed expectations(boomkat, buy here)
